*Edit* I will be uploading all my progress on this project and its additions to this thread.

My Dakka Thread
What started out as a competition entry for Terragenesis "burial site" competition has become a full scale modular game board. I have made enough tiles to cover any standard size table, There are stalagmite/actite sections to make rooms with, some stone coffins and some Gothic arches to frame it all. I am now painting it with resin.

Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. Wholeboardhighangle

Thank you
superscenic.

VERY COOL! I think anyone who has ever crawled through a dungeon/cavern setting in some RPG or other has a warm spot in their heart for this sort of FINELY DONE terrain. It looks TERRIFIC & very games-worthy. WELL DONE! Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. 544694

Painting it with resin? Wot?

Anyway great project. Are the pieces all hand made or purchased? Some close ups of the individual tiles?

I'm really interested in the stalactites or mites as the case may be.

I'm really interested in the stalactites or mites as the case may be.

They are cast into sand with dentstone, then painted with polyester resin for strength. Now the stalactite/agmite were really easy. I took a sharpened dowel of different sizes and poked shapes into wet sand. (I have a sandpit/table for making Marine coral this way) Basically you make "molds" which you fill with the plaster. When set you pull it out and scrub the excess sand off. Very quick and easy.

This all took me about a month so the casts are the quickest thing.

The lava still needs three steps to completion and the tiles need touching up and drybrushing. I followed the following painting tutorial for the lava dark art miniature lava painting guide. The 3d texture is obtained by glueing down sea shell bits from the beach and then adding "plumes" with a hot glue gun.

This is very nice for that egg-hunt scenario! I love it.

Reminds me of the cave-levels of Diablo 1 somehow . Good luck on the competition!

Very impressive! That thing is huge now!! That lava looks fantastic, the little wisps of hot made with the hot glue take it to a whole new level.

I also wanted to say that I feel bad about what happened with you trying to submit over at TG. I really hope you re-consider and post it over in the showcase thread. This really is fantastic!

I Love my glue-gun as you may know from my Tyranid spires tutorial. I have a good way of avoiding "threads" now which entails pivoting the gun into the surface as I drag the tip of the gun away. This anchors any threads and wipes the tip of the gun unto the surface.

Thanks HornedRat. Well I got upset and threw my toys out the cot. In retrospect I should have relaxed, but boy was I P'ed Off! Livid practically. I watched the clock all day, but only gave myself half an hour to take pictures and submit. It took me that long just to carry all the bits outside and place them. Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. Icon_sad On that first day after the submission time closed, I was very tired and sleep deprived from working late nights outside in the cold and breathing toxic resin fumes. When it sunk in I missed the deadline: Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. Confused Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. Icon_mad Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. Icon_evil I wanted to win so I could choose a theme.

I think had I taken time to calm down and compose polite/er messages to Andy he might have made an exception. Instead I tried to convince him that I should be allowed to submit because I was finished with the actual construction/painting. I might just mail him again and make peace.

My own little online drama.

What I have planned next would be a fortress or strong-point. If I can find any Mordheim players around here beside my own chums I want to start building raised sections and walkways so I may have the proper 3d Game experience.

Thank you

Just waht I was thinking! The last level in Diablo 2 too.

Similarities aside, this is one hell of a gaming board, almost more of an art-project. Great work!

Hiya chums. This is an update about some new additions and retouching I will be doing on my lava cave.

Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. Coateddragonslargeversion
Above are the Dragons that will be holding up the bridge.
Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. IMG_7099
Here is my Fire Node, also doubles as a Magic casting platform and to add six tiles to the surface area.
Superscenic's Thread: My modular Lava cave. IMG_7103
Above is the test sample of sand and "flexi-tiler" attached to a ruined pillar of my fortress in the making.
What I still need to do is:
1) Fill the gaps between the pillars of the temple ruins to block line of sight for this September's tournament.
2) Add two large panels to ensure I have 4' by 6' feet of playing area.
3)Finish my bridge.
4) Finish my Fire Node
5) Retouch damaged stalactites.

Wow! What a great project! I don't know how I missed this before, but I'm glad you posted today so I could see the older stuff, too. Just brilliant execution. What really makes it for me are the little tongues of flame on the lava tiles. Outstanding work!
