Hi guys,

I'm playing in a tourney for Mordheim. We're going with Warbands of 1000gc with the 'fighting individual battles' rules, so there's no XP gained and no upgrades through XP, just buying them with gold. I'm going to be playing my Witchhunters, but am wondering about something: Should I slim down the number of characters in my warband and beef up the stats and skills of my heroes, or go for the full compliment, but sacrifice some stats/skills?

My thinking is to slim down the size of the Warband to maybe 6 - 8 Witchhunters (full five heroes and some flag's) and beef up the stats of my heroes. I would like to take a couple of hired characters as well, but the cost established is initial hiring plus one upkeep so am unsure. I can see danger in facing larger warbands, but the potential of having skills and stats can potentially off-set this problem.

Anyone got any ideas or counter suggestions?

I'd go with at least 9 total guys. That way you would have to lose 3 guys before you needed to make rout checks. It's probably worth taking some of the characteristic increases though.

You can increase your number of units in your warband without too much cost since you can get wardogs, which are cheap for WS4, S4 and only 15 gold. Also Flagellants, while not that cheap (55g w/ weapon) are still a good buy considering they have S4, T4 and improving a S3, T3 witchunter to S4, T4 costs 55g just for the improvements. I would get a couple of these guys and even spend money to buy them an extra wound.

So with 2 dogs and 2 flagellants with great weapons and an extra wound that would cost 180g. That leaves you with 820g for your heroes and buying any hired swords. As far as hired swords goes a pit fighter is probably the best buy. But of course it depends on what you need for your warband.

Only having 9 or 10 guys you'll probably be outnumbered, but your guys should be tougher and able to have more staying power.

Thanks db, good advice to bump it up for the rout test.

@ Silicon, it's a one day thing, more for fun than anything else. I agree with you though, taking the XP and warband development takes away a lot of the fun ^_^
