PostSubject: Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table   Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Icon_minitimeMon 14 Dec 2009 - 21:29

Hi All!
I've been lurking on the forum for quite some time now and registerd some time ago. I've been going through almost every (there's just so many cool stuff here!!!) scenery and painting article posted on these here hallowed (web)pages and i've been stealing... erm been inspired by so many ideas I thought it's about time I did somethig back (and also because I want to show you my stuff Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Icon_bounce )
So hopefully this thread will motivate me to do even more work on the mordheim scene!!
comments and critiques are always welcome!!!

here is my (improved Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Icon_question ) version of HIRST ARTS' bell tower (I just added some extra height and an extra decorative rim) - The tower looks less white in person though- actually it doesn't look white at all but a brwonish sand stone type of colour, like medieval chruches

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4910

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4912

next up is a WIP of my "small merchant's house:"

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4913

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4914

and "The Shoppe":

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4915

Next is a WIP of a monument erected for some municipal victorie:

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4918

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4919

If your wondering why to top is red: that's because I Dyed one of the big bricks on the small bricks mold (ironical isn't it? Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Suspect ) and then used it as a stamp to get the right sized bricks on the top piece Smile

The Temple of Sigmar (based on the Hirst Arts Gothic Church)

a rear view:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4921

left side:

right side:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4925

And the front together with my scale guy:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4926

next is my Temple of Taal (again a Hirst arts piece):
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4927

with removable altar:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4928

this is just a litlle something I created to test some techniques:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4929

now you've seen some of my buildings I'll show you my board: the plan is to create various modular sections which can be assembled in multiple ways . The main goal with these pieces is get more 3D in the game:

this is a first prototype I created just to test some techniques:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4930

obvious the guy living there had to be a heretic: how else would you explain this 'secret' passageway between his cellar and the sewers?!?
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4931

Off course this is a Multi-year plan so this is the next tile, but there'll follow other pieces of different sizes and heights
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4932

a close up of the stairs (still WIP):
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4933

And here I discovered (unfortunatly) there are different types of kadapak (the white boards I use ) the thinner ones on the next foto and those used on my buildings are of the good kind: peel of one of the carboard sheets and you get a material that's very similar to pink foam or isolation foam: ideal for carving stones! the other ones unfortunatly aren't! and I just bought a whole bunch of them - do'h!
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4934

all the big sheets are to become cobblestone like the protype (after i replace them with 'good' kadapak) except the smaller ones in the middle which are to become removable street sections like the example in the middle

and the sewers:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4935

next is a litlle something I made to have an extra piece quickly:
and you can see the bad kind of kadapak on the first pic:[url=https://servimg.com
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn4936

and a bench in a nis (don't know englisch word) to give models some place to hide in:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Dscn5010

So, This is what I got so far! Hope you like it! and I hope I can show you more stuff soon, I got lots of plans waiting to burst out of my head and become a reality but i got a serieus case of the 'to- many-projects-going-on-at-the-same-time-virus' which delays my projects quite a lot, but what the heck so long as we have fun doing what we do, right? Tnx for sharing.

Pretty good looking scenery so far.

I've always liked how Hirst arts mould produce beautiful buildings, but your work is above average.

Hope to see more of your work in the future.

best wishes.

Like the reversible altar, could make for a nice game of turn based domination if you've got a little pantheon going for the crafty campaigners.

I was going to do just modular above ground terrain for our board, but you've inspired me to try and implement a sewer underneath. Great ideas, and terrain - I especially like the temple of taal and the merchant quarters with the large shoppe window.

@ Bernhardt:

I've been planning on ordering some of those molds for awhile now. Couple questions:

What kind of plaster do you use? Plaster of paris is inexpensive, but I heard it can be very heavy on top of wearing out with a lot of use. I hear dental plaster is the way to go for durability, but it is expensive (I think it also is sort of heavy).

After using molds do you have any recommendation for my first purchase? I'm pretty sure my number one purchase is going to be the accessory pack with the barrels and such. Can never have enough of those. I was considering cobblestone and/or fieldstone, but I'm about to try making a cobblestone stamp so I might not need it. What brick molds would you recommend for Mordheim?

Thanks!

well frog, he has a tutorial on his site on how to make your own molds! I know it sounds odd but it just goes to show that the hobby is nr 1 for him and not profit!

@ Sartori: I would advice not to use cobblestones or flagtiles for building the table, i.e. the streets and squares and such because they are all perfectly 1inch square tiles and that would ruin the fun of estimating distances. This matters less in small areas like inside buildings so that's why I still use them indoors but not outside.

Which molds you should use kinda depends on what you like and offcourse your budget. If money is no issue than I recommend you buy the basic blocks mold to! It's amazing howmuch of these basic blocks you need! If you'r on a tight budget you might want to buy other molds with some detailed bricks as well. To this end I purchased the wizards tower mold because it has lots of basic blocks but I'm not content of it! I wouldn't recommend this one for Mordheim. the arrow slits are only usefull for military buildings and the support pieces with the faces in them are a bit to broad to be really useful. It's plusside are the crennelations which are pretty useful for adding detail.
I'm very content of the Bridge mold and the dragon's inn. Also I regret not having bought the prison tower mold. With these three you can make most projects you can think of. you get a very broad range of blocks with these.
I also bought the small bricks mold for details like chimneys, fireplaces or walls.
Though I do not have any fieldstone molds I do believe these would work very well in Mordheim. And the Gothic dungeon builder would be great for adding details!

Well these are my experiences. but I really can't tell you what to buy. You might prefer fieldstone over regular blocks. or if you're not interested in ballustrades then you don't need the bridge (but I love that mold Smile, it has great archways! ) but the Prison tower is an absolute must!

I hope this helps, and I also hope to post some updates soon

edit: I just noticed you asked after plaster as well: I use Dental Hard White F.E. plaster. It's what the guy from zwolsman gips recommended. I bought 23kg for 25€ but I really don't have enough experience with plaster to give any sound advice. Perhaps you should check out the forums at Hirst arts

These look pretty cool. I am mainly impressed with the way you have been able to lay out the sewer pipes on your modular terrain board section in the pictures. I have sketched out something similar in order to prepare for the next terrain board which I intend to work on.

Although it takes a little more effort to create a gaming table with a subterranean section, my intention will be to promote this area of the hobby next year. I hope that anyway who is interested in playing with or exterminating the underfolk will be with me on this one. Wink

Well done sir. Keep your eyes peeled on the Border Town Burning web site. At some point we might be able to deliver you some characterful adventures which exploit this awesome board you are working towards completing and it would be brilliant to have your groups support in the future.

Regards,

Werekin.

Well thank you for the kind words! At this time I'm not yet looking at BTB since I'm fairly new to Mordheim. I still have to do a proper campaign so the game's still interesting enough for me to not need to look up other settings. but I will certainly keep it in mind! A scenerio for my sewers would be awesome Smile and besides being awesome it would be some great motivation to findely finish them! Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Icon_mad

Time for an update! Haven't done to much scenery though but this is what I got so far:

this is an old one, it was actually the first building I made. Now it's finaly painted!
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Img_4311

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Img_4312

Next is an Arabian Merchant's house: the idea is that an Arabian merchant came to Mordheim but kept to a semi-arabian styled house. This came because of two reasons: It allowed me to use a different style of windows, and it allows for a flat roof which I wanted to include to encourage players to use the roof tops.
Ground floor painted:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Img_4510

work has begun on the first floor (unfortunatly I made the grave mistake of not painting the walls at a whole, dunno why I did that Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Kopfschuettel )
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Img_4511

the front and the rear: I hate it how most people build their houses with a beautifull front wall, which is mostly unscathed and a destroyed back wall. Here I wanted to do the very opposite of that: the front is ruined and the back (with the balcony overlooking the garden) is intact:
Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Img_4512

Capt'n Bernhardt's Mordheim Table Img_4513

I plan on finishing this building this week so give me lots of encouragement and comments to keep me motivated! also if you've got good ideas to include now is the time to tell me!!

I'm so stealing some ideas from your church and later buildings! (specially the church's roof, that exactly what mine is missing at the moment) Too bad I'm out of GW building bits for the doors and windows..

HOw did you make the wood texture on the first building mate?
Great stuff! keep us updated!
