In parallel with my Marienburg sword school themed warband, I'm building some terrain for them - starting with the sword school itself. My Hirst Arts moulds arrived today, so I've been casting away and hope to start construction soon(TM). In the meantime, here are some bits and bobs that I made/painted while waiting for the moulds' delivery:

@DeafNala, thank you! I'm planning a mixture of ruined and intact buildings, although I suspect I'll damage/weather them all to a degree. For my sword school complex, I'm planning it as if debris from the comet's impact hit one side of the complex and damaged several buildings on that side while the buildings on the other side remain more or less intact.

I have cast enough bricks to get started, and decided to jump in at the deep end with the Great Hall and Gymnasium - two almost identical buildings and the largest on the site. The Great Hall will have sustained quite a lot of damage to it's left side, while the Gym will be completely intact.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Guildhall

This is the Great Hall as it stands, with Hans Pegnitzer standing inside for scale. As you can see, the right side is intact, while the left side will be built up a little with the broken remains of a matching set of arched windows.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Guildhall_floor

I went for a tiling pattern centred in the middle of the room.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Guildhall_wall

Here's a closer look at the windows. I blame the slightly crooked construction on the comet's impact...

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Guildhall_front

This is a slightly more up to date shot showing how the front will look. The gable is removable and will eventually be attached to the rest of the roof.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Gymnasium

The Gymnasium is virtually identical to the Great Hall, but has a wooden floor and will have slightly different decoration once finished. I'm waiting for more arch blocks to dry so I can start on the walls.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Gymnasium_floor

The floor is made from coffee stirrer sticks, cut to length and then glued to a thin piece of foamboard to bring it up the correct level.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Tower

Because the bottleneck for both of the main buildings is a lack of arch blocks, I decided to make a start on the watch tower which requires only a single doorway arch.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Tower_base

The tower splits at each storey, and will have a floor supported by the beams in the above picture. The floor assembly will then be attached to the bottom of the storey above to allow access to all the levels. On top of the two stories picture will be a crenellated upper storey, with a wooden roof above holding a bell.

In case anyone is interested, I'm planning on including the following buildings in the sword school:

Great Hall
Gymnasium
Watch Tower
Kitchen (annexe to the Great Hall)
Common Room (again, attached to the Great Hall)
Armoury (annex to the Gymnasium)
Powder Store (probably underground)
Master's Quarters
Staff's Quarters
Student's Quarters
Workshop/Forge
Various basement storage areas
A shooting gallery with targets, and training space out in the yard
Toilets (which seem to often get left out)

Plus a few bits and bobs such as a well and tree inside the compound's walls.

+1 to what Al said! thumbsup

Any scenery building process has its frustrations and joys. Whenever I see Hirst Arts threads I am so glad I build with polystyrene and wood. clown

@DeafNala, I am doing. Assembling the buildings very much reminds me of playing with Lego as a child.

@Von Kurst, Actually, I am using all three materials - HA blocks for stonework, balsa wood for the timbers and polystyrene for the plastered walls. I'll also likely end up using card for the shingles when I get round to that job.

Interestingly, the stonework has been much easier to get right than the wooden framing - you'll see what I mean when I post some pictures in the next couple of days. The only somewhat dull bit is the casting itself.

I'm in the middle of a hectic 4-8 weeks (still not sure exactly how long it will be), but I've continued slowly making progress on my Mordheim board. The main buildings have been going up as fast as I can cast arches, so in the meantime I've got started on the first (semi) timber-framed building. It's going to be a cottage for the school's groundsman/nightwatchman/handyman so will be small but not decrepit.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 Groundskeepers_house

More pictures to follow as and when I get time - I've taken lots throughout the whole build process showing the assembly of the ground floor, cutting of what feels like a thousand half-lap joints for the frame and a million card shingles for the roof.

Going through hectic periods with little free time is something I can relate with...it does pass eventually.
That looks SPLENDID...nice woodwork! Keep up the GREAT WORK as time permits.   thumbsup

@DeafNala and VonKurst, thanks!

Work continues, albeit slowly. I've now finished filling in all the gaps in the walls and just have to coat the non-wooden bits with plaster, then I can begin painting.

No pictures because it's much the same to look at as last time, but progress is happening!

That 'hectic six to eight weeks' is starting to look like a hectic six to eight months... Rolling Eyes

Over the last couple of weeks i finished filling in gaps and coated the foam with plaster.

I met up with a friend for a painting session and was able to break out the airbrush to start blocking in base colours on the groundskeeper's house.

The floors come off so that the interior is accessible for gameplay.

Now that the basic colours are blocked in I can get to work with washes and add shading and colour variation. Once the painting is done I'll add windows using theomar's method and add some flock, plus some more furniture. Then it will be on to the next building. Wink

That was semi-successful; i.e., all but the top two are visible...AND LOOKING GOOD!  thumbsup

Thanks for the edit. At least we can see the bottom three.

Maybe a small commoner's house like this would have a wooden stairway instead of this massive one but it's still a really cool house.

Perhaps, but I was building with the blocks at the time and wooden staircases are a lot of effort Wink

So when I said in June that I was in the middle of a hectic 4-8 weeks, I what I should have said was a hectic 4-8 months.

Alongside the final year of my Computing degree, I adapted and then production managed an amateur production of Beowulf, which hoovered up an inordinate amount of time - I spent over 100 hours of my summer holidays making a mail shirt (only partly for the play, partly for my own enjoyment) and a similar amount of time writing and rewriting, editing and finally getting approval for the script. All this on top of the normal workload of a production manager, and a couple of set designs that needed doing - suffice to say that I haven't touched my miniatures since the start of summer.

However, there's no smoke without a fire and so I must have made some progress on my terrain; and I have. Having left the vast bulk of my miniature paraphernalia at university, about the only thing I've been able to work on is my Hirst Arts blocks, which were left at my parents' due to space issues. Here's the progress that's been made so far:

Work has continued on the groundskeeper's cottage - the base colours for the shingles and the timber beams have now been blocked in and it awaits a few hours' painting to bring it to completion.

Note the lead flashing around the chimney and the roof's apex. This is easy (if a little fiddly) to achieve with some masking tape, soaked with PVA in situ to give it a more appropriate texture and ensure proper adhesion.

Progress has also continued, albeit only slightly, on the other buildings in the sword school complex. The fencing hall's ground floor is now complete, and it awaits construction of the roof when I acquire some more suitable balsa wood, before it can be painted and the windows fitted.

The 'stone' gable ends are also complete - they'll remain detachable to allow access to the interior of the building.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_231110_zps6sbrlvjg

The guildhall proper, which follows the same design, is further from completion. I've assembled most of the intact stonework, but the destroyed wall needs a lot more broken stone added before being liberally covered with rubble and beams from the also destroyed roof. I'll be making a separate section of ground to sit alongside the building proper so that the rubble can fall outside the walls as well as inside.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_231829_zpspglj5itu

Note the fancy tiling, this will be almost completely covered with rubble...

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_231836_zpszyip2d0z

The watchtower also slowly nears completion; the body of the tower is done, but it still lacks a base and only the frameworks for the wooden components are done.

I've also started on the perimeter wall of the sword school:

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_225358_zpso90mjxvg

As Boreas can tell you, one can never have too many statues - so I've made a pair of them. This first one will be a disused fountain, commemorating an old battle at which the High Elves fought alongside the Empire (I assume such a thing happened at some point in the Old World).

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_225058_zpsnkbrvnqp

The second (smaller) statue is of an iconic local Blood Bowl player. I know that Blood Bowl doesn't technically exist in the Old World proper, but this is *my* board and I my city will have Blood Bowl (and in the future a proper stadium, hopefully).

Lastly, I've also started on some city walls because they use lots of plain blocks. I've gone for a reasonably generic high/late medieval 'open' look and might add a roof later. They should also be useful for siege games of regular Warhammer or LOTR if I ever get to play them.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_225446_zps88qfrxw5

The first section is just a 30cm straight, with storage built in to the wall itself - I envision that this is more or less the basic design (excluding the storage) and I will make some form of change to practically every section.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_225534_zpsynvn529z

The second, as yet unfinished, section has a set of stairs for access, and no storage.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161225_225741_zpsevaeloey

This little corner will probably acquire a market stall or similar structure in time, when fully constructed. The hollow interior will also be useful for storage of smaller components, in time.

That's all for now, hope you've all had a good Christmas and let me know if any of the pictures fail to show up.

Very productive! Looks great. I really have to get some of those Hirst Arts moulds.

I do agree that you have been knocking the stuff out in FINE FASHION. Generally speaking I don't care for Hirst stuff; re, to me it's all rather stiff & Lego-like. Your embellishments, like the wood floors are nice touches to the pieces. Have FUN with the painting   thumbsup

Thanks, but it's easy to seem productive if you go for months between posts. The moulds are excellent, but you do have to make a fairly large commitment to using them  - to do anything at all interesting you need multiple moulds and a large amount of plaster.

It can be a little formulaic, but I find that stiff isn't normally an issue for stone built structures. Wink You're definitely right about including other materials to break up the monotonous stonework. I also think that they perhaps suit my style of work more than your very organic style, and I do enjoy the Lego aspect of building with them...

Just a short update, progress wise. I've been trying to finish off a few things to take back to university with me - travelling on the train kind of precludes me from bringing a 20kg block of plaster + moulds etc. Come term time this scenery log will slow down again, but I've got some more bits and pieces for my actual warband, which has it's own log in the painting section.

I've finished the stonework for the second section of city wall. This is a rather large and heavy piece so it probably won't make it back with me, but that's life.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161231_174554_zps7nebn9d8

Sticking with the theme of things that I can't take with me, I've added some detailing to the front gables of the guildhall and gymnasium. The white plastic strips will get painted lettering on them.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161231_174526_zpsywlupyha

I've also been working on another section of the school's perimeter wall. This piece will have a small shrine to Sigmar in the alcove.

marienburg - The Marienburg School of Martial Arts - updated 19/01/18 IMG_20161231_174434_zps01ulnpjx

The different colours of the blocks are due to my experiments with dyeing the plaster a darker colour so that chipped paintwork is less noticeable - I've been mixing different amounts of dye as well as using some of my remaining stock of undyed blocks.

As you can see, if you use lots of dye it tends to sink within the mould and give a gradient to the colour of the block.
