Da Cleavermaw - under new management Sea-of-Dread-map_zps443c1331

(Interactive map here)

Mutiny

Da Cleavermaw is an Orc ship. Actually a hulking conglomeration of several different wrecked and captured ships, cobbled together over many years from victims and any old junk the crew could salvage. The prow and stern are completely mismatched and it rides the waves in an ungainly, awkward way. It looks like a dog, steers like a cow and smells like a slum. Luckily it also packs a punch like a prizefighter: it is equipped with mechanical contractions to grapple and board an enemy and vast amounts of heavy artillery.

Her commander, Kaptain Bilgewater, was quietly mad - he firmly believed he was a serving captain in the "Royal Sartosa Navy", rather than in a pirate fleet, under the command of "Admiral" Kurgan Grimjaw and serving the Prince of Sartosa.

He ran his crew on the lines of a formal national navy: ranks, discipline, rum-rations, attacking "enemy" vessels, and writing long tiresome written reports to the Admiral. His crew knew they were really pirates but they tended to go along with him as he always managed to find a good fight - though they were never really happy about the way he ran the ship. Unlike most pirate crews the Cleavermaws weren't very interested in gold or money, just materials that will enable their continued cruising and fighting. Anything they find aboard captured "prize" vessels that isn't immediately useful was sent back to Sartosa.

But, as with groups of greenskins everywhere, if they are left to their own devices for too long things turn ugly. After a particularly long cruise, with no enemy in sight, fights started to break out below decks. Orcs are used to this and consider it their right. The also consider it perfectly normal for the Boss to wade in, crack a few heads together and stop the fight before it gets too messy. But Bilgewater went berserk: He had half the crew flogged half to death "Ta restore a bit o' order".

This wouldn't have been a disaster if he hadn't taken a further step. A step too far for most of the Cleavermaws: he emptied the rum overboard!

That night there was a secret meeting in the depths of the forward cable tiers - a group of Big'Unz (Mogrum "Da Butcha", Mr Sludga, Shaman Lynch, and even Mr Badrot - Bilgewater's first mate - among them) got together and plotted to overthrow Kaptain Bilgewater and his cronies.

Mogrum led a mutiny against Kaptain Bilgewater and took over command of the Cleaverrmaw. Bilgewater, two of his officers (Jonah Wail the Shaman and Mr Deadwood the second mate) and his "redcoats" (Mollroy and Mortog) were marooned on a desert island while the rest of the crew sailed away without them.

Kap'n Mogrum the Butcha
Skull-faced mask, big floppy hat, long red coat, festooned with pistols.
He is completely obsessed with closely examining the captured papers, maps, charts, orders, logbooks and letters - he has standing orders for the crew to gather them from captured ships. He hoards them in his cabin and, along with his clerk, pours over them for hours in the night making details notes and trying to fit them together or to make sense of them as a whole.

Sludga
Pirate Orc first mate - hulking lunk of a Black Orc. Armed to da Teef, bandana, massive kutlass.

Lynch
Orc Shaman in a huge hybrid wizard/pirate hat with a tall (bent) point and a very broad brim, folded up at the front with a skull & bones pin, long beard, staff, compass, spell book and scroll.

The other crew that stayed with the ship (and Mogrum):

Mr Badrot the second mate, Ledger Nud the Kaptain's clerk and Skribla his Goblin assistant, Weatherly Deg, Liberty Snik, Dogwatch Fug, Bosun Higgs, Double Barrel, Oiler Tunn, Gunport Pug.

Da Cleavermaw - under new management Assassins_Creed_IV_Black_Flag_-_Concept_art_15_by_kobempire_zps91f5499e

Beginings

Mogrum strolled across the deck, enjoying the feeling of it's living movement. The pitch and roll of a ship at sea was always a sensation he loved but there was something extra special in the action of the Cleavermaw.

She was an ugly beast of a ship. Her prow was the front half of a great Bretonnian Galley from the last age; Her stern was the back third of an Empire Galleon. The disparate  parts were melded together in that typical Orcish slap-dash manor - slabs of salvaged timbers, stolen nails, steel plates, ropes and canvas. Reinforced gun-ports were cut in uneven sequence along three decks.

The hope that she would not come apart had long since been replaced by the unshakable conviction that she could not. Generations of successive ship's carpenters saw it as their duty to add extra armour, reinforcement and strengthening, whether the ship actually needed it or not.

She handled like an angry cow as well: she was sluggish and ungainly in smooth waters, only a little more cooperative in the high seas that she seemed to prefer. It was near impossible to get the ship not to gripe and setting the right combination of sails was an endless game of guesswork and experimentation. Her mismatched masts complained constantly and no combination of rigging seemed to suit her.

She was over-gunned, especially on the upper deck, so that there was a very real chance of an over enthusiastic master gunner tearing her to bits if he ordered a simultaneous broadside. The batteries had to be fired in ragged rolling volleys to avoid the most damaging effects of recoil strain.

But the Cleavermaw, for all her many faults, was still special to Mogrum: she was his ship.

His previous commands in the Ironfang Pirate Fleet had all been temporary: the Hogwasha while Adm'rul Kurgan was ashore fighting land battles. The Rotmoon, while Kapitan Da Leeva was recovering from wounds. Many other were even briefer.

No the Cleavermaw was truly a horrible old hulk, but she was his horrible old hulk.

Now Bilgewater and his cronies were disposed-of the Cleavermaws were either loyal to him or too scared to stand up to him and his mates. Even the unhappy ones would probably come around once they captured a prize or two.

Campaign update Turn 1 wrote:
Off the Southlands coast, near Jungle Haven

Kap'n Mogrum bellowed a cry of Waaagh! to the clear skies, under which the Cleavermaw had found and engaged its target. The sparkling azure sea between the greenskins and their opponent rippled violently in response to the ship's ungainly movement, heaving and swaying without rythym or rhyme. Its adversary, the Red Witch flying the colours of South Bretonnia, was more elegant by far, practically dancing upon the waves in comparison to the hulk's erratic approach. Yet even the Bretonnian crew, despite their people's reputation as the Old World's the finest sailors, struggled against the brutal strength of the orcs.

The tallship had been encountered off the coast of the Southlands, stumbling across the location where Mogrum and his crew had dropped anchor some nights before. The sight of the human ship had stirred the blood of the restless greenskins, and Mogrum was not one to deny his boyz their heart's desire.

At the helm, Kap'n Mogrum peered through the slits of his heavy steel mask at the quarry coming at him aport from the hulk. He had his wheel turned as far as the rickety construction allowed, making a sharp turn around the enemy ship, attempting to bring his broadsides to bear.

The Red Witch fired and he ducked, cannonballs splintering the timbers of his ship and splattering any member of his crew too slow to get out of the way. Several beams which held the salvaged fore- and aft castles together came apart, yet the Cleavermaw held, if only just. Mogrum grinned, too caught up in his lust for battle to worry about the integrity of the ship, before throwing the wheel around. The violent move almost immediately changed the course of the ship, providing his first mate Sludga with a narrow window to order the broadsides fired. Mogrum knew it was all the veteran black orc would need.

The massive cannons, salvaged from an Imperial wolfship, came to life with a thundering roar. Black smoke, sparks and a sharp scent of spent blackpowder accompanied the heavy steel cannonballs, belched forth in a wide arc. As Mogrum's eyes followed their flight he knew the projectiles would hit their mark, but the familiar sound of impact brought a satisfied smile to his face nonetheless. His boyz let out a spirited cheer at the sight of the tallship, now listing dangerously aport. Black smoke rose from the Red Witch- apparently the impact had set a part of the ship on fire. Already Mogrum could see the human sailors rushing to put out the fire, somewhat disappointed at the lack of panic aboard the now burning vessel. Disappointment turned to anger, and Mogrum threw the wheel back, setting the Cleavermaw on a course directly towards the Red Witch.

The greenskin ship was now sailing in the wake of the Red Witch, closing while the tallship struggled to bring its broadsides to bear once more. Much to the orcs' pleasure, this battle was far from over...

Off the Southlands coast, near Calm Waters

Haruuc Draal sat leisurely on his throne, an imposing thing of dark mahogany and gold which he had ordered built upon the aft castle of his ship. From there, chewing contently on a slab of dark red meat, he watched the battle between the Red Witch and the Cleavermaw unfurl. Both ships were listing now, crippled and ready for the taking. He grinned to himself. Oh, there was nothing aboard the Cleavermaw that he wanted. He'd even let them keep part of the plunder, as he had promised the orcs back in town. Making deals was in his nature, and it was bad for business to to break his word. But half the gold in that ship's holds was his, and those orcs should not test the limits of his patience.

The ogre captain grinned. Any person coming into Calm Waters waving around bars of gold was a fool, and fools wouldn't hang on to their gold very long on the Sea of Dread.

A year ago, Haruuc pondered, he'd have tried to talk the ship's captain into sharing her gold with him. When he was a diplomat working under Mog Silvergut in Dwarapur, he definately would've made a deal with her to that effect. But he was tired of talking, and his Big Name of Contract-Maker had been secured. The ogre felt it was time to acquire a new Big Name. "Shipbreaker" seemed like something worth pursuing.

'Take us closer, bully-boys!' he roared across the deck. The bulls roared and dropped sail, and as Da Maw caught wind it sped up, timbers creaking and rigging groaning in the wind.

The Red Witch was coming right at him, pursued by the Cleavermaw, just like the two pirates had planned. Haruuc roared and slammed his fist into the armrest of his throne, the order to fire everything they had at their quarry. Dozens of heavy stones were hurled at the tallship, shattering masts and punching through the deck. The Red Witch, already crippled during its fight with the cleavermaw, creaked one last time.

Then it began to sink.

Haruur laughed at the spectacle. The Red Witch lay dead in the water- but there was still time. Time to plunder its carcass, take the gold and make off with a fortune. It was a good day to be a pirate.

Hammering

Was it the hangover from last night's rum-fueled celebrations, or actually hammers on nails? It was hard to tell.

Shaman Lynch opened his eyes in the darkness of his cabin, rolled out of his hammock and groaned. His head span for a few moments before he was able to find a bottle and take a swig. Once the cheap rum started working its way through his system again he realised the pitching floor was really pitching and the hammering was at least half outside his head. Though it wasn't helping the hammering that was inside his head any. He grabbed his battered hat and staff and made his way up the ladder from his cabin in the depths of the hold, towards the upper deck. He had half a mind to shout at the lubbers who were making such an infernal racket.

The brilliant sunlight that waited for him in the open air was blindingly painful but the cool sea breeze was relatimvely refreshing.

All around him there was swarming activity - Orcs and Goblins seemed to be rushing around and shouting at each other (or at least at the Goblins), most of them were carrying tools or planks or rope or other less recognisable bits of nautical detritus. The events of the previous day started to filter back into his memory: The battle with the Bretonnian ship Red Witch, the hold stuffed full of loot, the drinking contest against the Ogre pirates of their consort ship Maw...

Lynch looked around a little too late at the cry of "Mind yer back, mate!" as a couple of burly Orc carpenters pushed past him and roughly shoved him out of their way. He stumbled away, tripped on a ring-bolt in the deck and knocked into an Orc, who had been knotting rigging, and sent him pitching overboard, yelling and bawling as he fell. Lynch tried to catch hold of the unfortunate Boy but in his haste he stepped in a bucket of bloody water, sending it's gory contents all over the deck. The squeaked indignant cries of the Goblin clean-up crews waving mops rang in his ears as he decided to beat a hasty retreat out of the way of the repair teams.

~ ~ ~

From the crow's nest, far above the crowded deck he gazed around the horizon. The crystal blue-green waters around the ship were so clear he could see the bottom, a dozen fathoms below the surface. Dark shadows flitted across the sandy sea-bed, but he did his best not to think what vast betoothed leviathans might be lurking down there.

He peered around the horizon, shading his eyes against the sparkling sunlight. A full circle of the empty horizon where the sky met the sea - only punctuated by occasional smudges of cloud above an island or possibly the mainland: Far, far away over a seemingly limitless expanse of water.

He fished out his rum bottle again and took another long swig.

By Gork, this was the life.

“There they are!” said Sludga.

“It’s that blasted Captain Gudrun and a whole bunch-a stunty Privateers.” said Badrot “Bilgewater had no end a troubles wiv dat git.”

“Roight.” said Mogrum, “Sludga: you take a few Boyz round da norf side of dat hill and da rest of us’ll head straight for ‘em. Hit ‘em in dat flank while dey are fightin’ us.”

“Aye aye skipper.” said Sludga and his four picked hands set off up the steep hill, keeping behind the ridge and out of sight as much as possible.

Badrot and Bosun Higgs charged ahead of the rest of the crew and got stuck in to the Privateers.

The jungle was teaming with wildlife and the Orc Pirates were already a little jumpy. When the Dwarf Slayer slammed into Dogwatch Fug and knocked him on the head, three of the others scattered and fled.

Da Cleavermaw - under new management 20140814_132224_zps2f28e679

Kaptain Mogrum and Captain Gudrun picked each-other out in the melee and shouldered their way towards each other. The two captains clashed - kutlass against cutlass, and both had soon drawn blood. But neither seemed to be able to gain the upper hand.

Unfortunately for Mogrum the same was not true of the rest of his crew and one by one they either fell or fled.

The cunning Orc Kaptain was not going to survive on his own, but Shaman Lynch had a trick up his sleeve - a strange and unnatural mist suddenly rolled out of the small river and obscured the Orcs as they fled.

Campaign update Turn 2 wrote:
Kingdom of Beasts

Thane Grundagraz Thorgrimson checked his charts for the tenth time. It was the Gal Gandazi who had found the wreckage of the Red Witch two days before as it drifted south along the Mangrove Coastline. It was he who had dragged the sole survivor aboard, dying of thirst and sunstroke. "The maws!" he'd gasped. "The maws!"

From the half-coherent babbling spoken by the poor man before his death, Grundagraz had learned of two vessels, one Greenskin and one Ogre. More importantly, he'd learned what the Red Witch had stumbled upon- the entrance to Calm Waters, a secluded haven of scum which had eluded its foes for decades. Leave it to a damned seer woman to find it without so much as trying!

He'd sent Wurrelin back to Goldhaven in his gyrocopter to let the Company and the Guild know. They'd pay handsomely to see this rat's nest rooted out at last, and now that he knew where to find it, Grundagraz wouldn't- couldn't- abide it. He saw before him a chance to bring home a fortune to Barak Varr with a day's work. He would bombard Calm Waters into the swamp it was built upon, and get a good night's sleep afterward.

"Two sails off the starboard bow! Two sails off the starboard bow!" the deckhand's gruff voice was tinny as it echoed down the speaking tube. "I'm on my way!" Grundagraz shouted back up, scooping up his prized handgun and making for the door.

~ ~ ~

The greenskin vessel "da Cleavermaw" had borne the brunt of Thane Thorgrimson's fury, its patchwork armor and rotten hull shattering beneath a hail of Dwarven shells as his thunderers scoured her decks of Orc crew. It was the Ogre vessel, the "Maw", which had proven a match for the Gal Gandazi. Forced to split his fire as the two vessels sought to hem in the Ironclad, the Maw had displayed true Ogre constitution and single-mindedness as it sawed its way toward him with implacable determination.

Eager to sink da Cleavermaw, Thorgrimson recognized Haruuc's intent to board too late. The deck pitched as the sheer weight of the Ogre hulkt caught the Gal Gandazi amidships, crippling its port paddlewheel. Although he boasted the best handgunners upon the Sea of Dread, he carried not a single Hammerer, Ironbreaker, or better yet, a Slayer aboard. They'd fought with true Dwarf mettle, Thorgrimson and his crew, but he knew they'd lost when Mogrum da Butcher and what remained of his boys clawed their way onto his decks.

Now, as Thane Thorgrimson leaned heavily against a railing, holding his guts inside his armor where it had been split apart by an Ogre longsword, he mustered the willpower to look up as a fresh commotion rocked the bastards who were busy butchering his gun crews below decks. The irony of the sight before his eyes made him bellow with laughter even as his Dwarf constitution succumbed to the blood loss...

His last sight in this world was the privateer greenskin Kaptin Zurghed and his hulk da Great Beasty smashed into the stern of da Cleavermaw, and greenskin butchered greenskin. Leave it to a manling seer woman to find what he hadn't, and leave it to a greenskin to finish what a Dwarf couldn't.

~ ~ ~

Haruuc Draal Contract-Maker ground his teeth in both hunger and disappointment, even as his butcher skinned and filleted the foolhardy Dwarf captain's corpse. Two and two and two and one of his Bulls were aboard the badly-listing Cleavermaw, bailing steadily just to keep the Greenskin hulk afloat. Kaptain Mogrum simply didn't have enough Orc hands left alive to keep up with the water pouring in.

Kaptin Zurghed had led the charge aboard da Cleavermaw, and looked to take it, his boys spilling across it's decks and onto the Gal Gandazi, trapping Mogrum and his crew beneath the Ironclad's decks where they'd pursued the Dwarf crew. It was Haruuc who'd led the charge across the Gal Gandazi's deck, sweeping Zurghed and his greenskins back across da Cleavermaw and onto their own ship. Seeing the Gal Gandazi already lost- or perhaps simply unwilling to see their own ship end up like the Cleavermaw- the greenskin privateer had wisely retreated.

It was a good thing Dwarfs often carried a heavy girth, Haruuc mused... the day's work had left him hungry, and the boys of da Great Beasty would've filled him up nicely. Still, he and Mogrum had claimed a second prize in as many weeks; their partnership appeared to be nothing if not profitable. Calm Waters remained safe, and he'd enjoy the rare treat of Dwarf tonight...

Ledger Nud's Ledger

Red Witch, Bretonnian Galley, Prophetess Tempest master, escaped(?).
Disabled, boarded, stripped for parts and looted of its treasure. Sunk.

Gal Gandazi, Dwarf Ironclad out of Barak Varr. Thane Grundagraz Thorgrimson master, killed.
Boarded, stripped for parts and looted of its treasure. Sunk.
They sent a gyro south, so there is a good chance that news of us is gone with it.

The Great Beasty, Orc Privateer Hulk. Kaptain Zurghed master.
Attacked and boarded us while we was looting Gal Gandazi. The Ogres of Maw drove them back and crews from both ships boarded them. The Beasty fled when the Dwarf sank.

Da Cleavermaw - under new management 539_large_zps525a4fcb

Chase

The green waters raced passed the prow of the ungainly hulk as it shouldered through the waves by sheer brute force at an unlikely speed. The railing on the weather side was lined with Orc Pirates and more had climbed the rigging above them to get a better vantage point. All eyes aboard were watching the chase intently, attentive to every order to trim sails, to squeeze every last knot out of the graceless ship.

Wispy white clouds raced overhead, overtaking the Cleavermaw, the wind on her quarter. White foam soaked the crew as the ship crashed through the crests of the rolling seas. Careless of the soaking, they stared intently at the Privateer. It was far ahead of them now but they were gaining - minute by minute the distance between them lessened.

Orders were bellowed, the words half-lost in the tearing winds and crashing sea. The forechaser gunz spoke almost together in a mismatched thundering double report. The larger gun kicked hard back on its restraining breech-ropes and caused a ripple of panic to spread through the Goblin gun crews who were briefly convinced it was about to explode. The Orc gun-captains ignored them and leaned out over the rail to see where their shot fell - each desperate to be the one who landed the first hit.

They plainly saw two splashes, just short of the chase.

The gunners set about beating and yelling at the Goblins to reload the chasers.

Ledger Nud's Ledger

The Great Beasty, Orc Privateer Hulk. Kaptain Zurghed master.
Attacked and boarded after playing long-ranged bowls for a while. The Beastys called "Parley" when we wuz about to overwhelm them. They offered to turn Pirate and tell us what the Privateers planz was if we spared 'em. Made 'em sign Artikulz.

Da Cleavermaw - under new management Gaius_eow_77_pirates_part_2_crpd-1_zpsfdf86720

Skulls

For days on end the Cleavermaw ploughed through the open waters of the Sea of Dread under cloudless skies. They marked-off a hundred miles or more on the chart, between one noon observation and the next. Sweet sailing on deep waters with barely another sail visible for most of their journey. They had chased the few ships they saw, sometimes getting close enough to fire on them. For the most part their days were spent lounging around the deck getting drunk, fighting each other and singing crude shanties.

But one morning the sun seemed to rise late. A thick, cloying, mist hung on the waters. It's grasping tendrils seemed to cling to the sails and rigging, drag across the ship's timbers. The glowering fog seemed to be slowing the Cleavermaw's passage.

Great black rocks loomed out of the discoloured murk: Rocks that appeared on no chart or map; Rocks that no-one aboard could remember seeing last time they sailed these waters. No-one had even heard rumours of; Rocks from the fathomless depths of the ocean. Worse still they were scoured into the forms of great screaming skulls - Shaman Lynch speculated by the Winds of Magic, the wind of Shyish: the wind of death.

A shiver ran through the crew and they fell silent. A sense of oppressive doom hung over them.

Wreck

The Orc Pirates raced to the site of a shipwreck that a hurricane dashed to bits on the rocky shore, scattering it's cargo along the high-tide line.

Obviously the Grudgebreakers had the same thought and they came ashore at almost the same moment.

Shaman Lynch grumbled to himself and checked his enchanted compass again. He was certain that this was the spot where the treasure ship came to it's end but there wasn't much sign of it.

Ledger Nud struggled to record what happened as the Orcs (and Goblin) clashed with the Dwarfs.

The Orcs and the Dwarfs both managed to claim some of the scattered loot for themselves but the Dwarfs just got the upper hand in the fight and the greenskins fell-back to their boats.

Or if there is a bridge or a dock, all dice will roll under them. True fact.
