Red from the Pits

Few have survived the pits of the arena, and Red was no exception. He was as ruthless man and a relentless killer, the scourge of the pits. He fought countless battles, and in the end, he too was taken down.

Knocked out, bleeding from multiple wounds, and left for dead, Red was thrown to the gutter. Though, in retrospect, what seemed to Red as a kindness at the time, his life was immutably changed and encompassed in pain. A carnival master happened upon his dying body and promised to return him to health to continue the carnage. Red agreed, but did not realize his life would not be full of torment as his wounds were never truly healed, but instead they were left wide open to rot and puss. He had received vigor from the master, but every movement and action caused his wounds to flare and cause immense pain. The pain not only clouds his senses and judgement, but has created a deep hatred for the master as every day Red lives is full of excruciating pain and torment.

Red joined the master, another brutish looking fellow, two twisted abominations of human beings and 6 henchmen to create a traveling troupe.

Scene 1: Surprise Attack

The beastmen were scattered among the craggy hills and their leader off in another area. The carnival dispersed along the edge in pack, hiding within the ruins. Though the beastmen were directly ahead, a gunnery class from Nuln controlled the hills to their left and witch hunters held the high ground to the right. He knew there were some others from Middenhiem, but they must have been somewhere else, not his concern. Red held the middle with a couple of the twisted ones as well as his fellow strongman known as "Strongman Steve".

From his left, Red could barely hear the orders being barked to the henchmen by the master due to the roaring of the handgunners of Nuln. The master and his goons had reached combat as the screams of men soon replaced the sounds of black powder.

Red saw that a gore was hiding behind the corner and pushed one of the tainted ones ahead to flush him out. As soon as the abomination was knocked out, Red quickly took out the gore. It must have been the blood pounding in his ears that caused him not to notice he was surrounded. The leader of the beastmen, another gore, and a centaur all charged at him. Red laughed as the two beastmen failed to harm him, but the overwhelming attacks from the centaur connected. As he fell to the ground, Red imprinted the centaur to his memory to get his revenge. If ever these two meet, Red's hatred will rise and that centaur will fall.

When Red recovered from the battle, he found that his warband had routed. The one they abomination called "The Knight" was able to best the beastmen shaman and gave him a lingering wound. The one he lead into the battle was known as "The Fool", which Red found appropriate. The master made a good showing of himself, knocking 2 of the gunners out, including their leader. The rest of the henchmen fulfilled their purpose. They are just grains of chaff clearing the way for his scythe. Lastly Red learned, either from the hit he put or the hit he received, how to ensure his target is injured when he lands his blow.

Thanks!

We are about 5 games into our campaign. I wanted to do some battle reporting, but I am fuzzy about the details on the earlier games, so I decided to try another format. I might try to do a video report in a similar format with images as well.

Love the report. Got the sense of the imprinted. Eminem in the background fits perfectly for the reading as well - can recommend that! ^_^

Looking forward to read more battle stories from you!

Scene 2: A Chance Encounter

Again Red found himself in the midst of battle in the craggy lands. This time another foe was afoot, in addition to the others in the previous battle, and their skin was greener than his plague ridden associates.

The master split the troupe into 3 groups. Red’s team was to spearhead directly into the crags and move to flank the Middenheimers that were to the right side. He led the group with Strongarm Steve, The Knight, and a henchman. A small force of henchmen was sent to the left to occupy the witch hunters. The master’s group consisted of the fool and a henchman.

The group that went to the left eventually followed Red’s team as they tried to bait the witch hunters into the crags. They had taken minimal fire from the crossbows as they were able to use the hillsides for cover.

The master’s group took light bow fire from the Middenheimers. The fool, a known arrow magnet, took one to the chest and was taken out of commission for the rest of the battle. The master eventually was able to approach the two on the flank and remove the swordsman that was feebly attempting to protect the archer.

Red’s group, upon exiting the crags, found themselves in the midst of a large scale brawl between the Middenheimers and the beastmen. He was able to run in to clean up a few that were still fighting, but both warbands routed almost immediately after Red joined the fray stealing away his chance are more carnage.

The master saw that they were now beset by witch hunters on one side with the Nuln gunners on a distant hill with a direct firing lane on the other side, and decided to call a rout to make out with the spoils they had earned.

So how do you play Chance Encounter as a multi-player game? Do you play all the basic scenarios as multi-player? I just realized the Surprise Attack above had more than two players too. That's got to suck for the guy who is surprised.

Anyway, good to hear more of your adventures.

Yeah, the guy in the middle had a bit of difficulty, he ended up fighting me, I survived most of it and fought off Nuln and we both routed early. Feels like the carnival and beastmen are just pin cushions for the witch hunters, Middenhiemers, and Nuln academy.

I forget, are there specificl multiplayer scenarios in the core rulebooks?

Scene 3 - The Frenzied Mob

It was the beginning of the end of Red's respect for the master.

Again the troupe rammed horns with the beastmen. This time however, Red was looking for a little fun. As the two warbands met, people living among the rubble came out to defend their territory.

Red strode along the left side with the master, one of the brethren, and another brethren that had made enough of a splash to earn his own keep. The master and the brethren of special status both armed themselves with bow. They had seen the power other warbands and their shooting and wasted money on trying to mimic their strategy. Red knew the best strategy was cleaving everything with his axe.

The unit sent to the right was able to dispatch the villagers in the building near them and Strongarm Steve was able to rummage through their belongings.

Red charged out and took out the magister in the building directly before him. The master warned him not to move so far ahead, but when Red saw the beastmen centaur, he could not be held back, now it was time for his revenge.

The centaur had dispatched a civilian outside the building that was ahead. That was when Red charged the magister as he was between him and the centaur. Feet away from his goal, Red braced for the charge of the centaur. Instead of charging, the centaur staggered forward having losing concentration on the battle. Not missing a beat, Red charged and easily removed the beast from the battlefield.

Once the centaur was down, Red found him surrounded. He was charged by the beastman leader, shaman, and a gor. As they rained down blow on Red, Red heard a scream from the master as he was taken down by a dog. He managed to avoid the attacks and then knocked out the shaman as well. Left alone, the Master removed and no support, Red fled. He was not proud, but he escaped death once, he was not going to give in just yet.

After the battle Red understood how he understood how he avoided being taken down himself, he became more resilient.

The multi-player scenarios were first published in a White Dwarf, then they were reprinted in The Best of Town Cryer and the 2002 Annual. The name of the article is Chaos On the Streets.

Red's doing pretty well for himself.

I will have to see where I can find that edition, we've been operating mostly off the ones on the GW website.

It is particularly due to how Red is performing that I have decided to center the story on him as it is far more interesting. Red is starting to throw the master under the bus in an attempt to take over the troupe himself, by game 7 he even has a leadership to his name to be just as authoritative... The stories coming up to that will be rolled out soon. Got another game on Saturday as well.
