After the 1347-1349 outbreak of the Black Death in Europe, skeletons, skulls, decomposing bodies etc. became an extremely widespread motif in art and architecture for a generation. I think GW's argument is that the Empire is constantly under that sort of pressure, and that consequently the prominence of skulls etc. in art and iconography is the natural result. The argument makes some sense... but I do find the over-abundance of skulls to be frequently tedious.
I do like this new terrain piece quite a lot though. this is, in my opinon, the best argument in this discussion so far. I also don't see why the skull has to be associated with EVIL all the time. If the skull was a symbol for evil than many renaissance paintings could be intrepreted as depicting evil, which is not the case: exhibit A(in this case the skull is seen as representing all humanity) (but I have to agree that aspecially the tower has to many skulls on them, for the garden of Morr I don't mind. just those that are littered on the ground don't make sence to me, but I'll just cut them away

| Skulls etc weren't necessarily symbols for evil, but more for death en decay. I could understand skull and bone motives being very prominent, but in this case there are "actual skulls" scattered everywhere | |

I mean really. The empire are meant to be the good guys. Undead, yes. Orcs, yes. Chaos, yes. Pretty much bloody anyone would furnish nearly everywhere with skulls except for the empire because The empire are meant to be jolly nice people and actually put people in the ground not just dig a bit of a hole and pop there head off so the body will fit in the sodding hole. [/rant]
Drake- I don´t mean to be disrespectful, but do you know anything about Warhammer? First thing, there are no "good guys." Secondly, if there were, they wouldn't be the Empire. As for them not using any skulls, do you know what Emperor Karl Franz´s coat of arms is? A skull. I really like this terrain piece, and I will get one. While the ammount of skulls in GW terrain is always very high, in this case it is actually justified.

| I still think that there's no reason for a priest of Morr to put actual skulls on his fence And ossuaries don't count, as they were clearly build to put the bones somewhere holy when the graveyard was full and people wanted to bury new corpses there Skull imagery ok, but skulls... And you need not associate them with evil to wonder why people would carry skulls around all the time (like the Empire troopers). While it was a common feature in art and imagery, I wonder if anyone thought it's cool to strap a skull to your belt when walking around In the end, it's just a taste thingy. I don't think it fits too well with the "original" spirit, but what does nowadays? Back in the days, everything looked pretty funny and colourful and now it's gotten, what do they call it in 40K?... grimdark, too. | |

| I think that I have allready posted in this thread, but the actuall post is gone it seems. Anyway, I love this piece, its awsome, very warhammerish and with that I mean what I love about the old warhammer lore, this fits right in. Anything Morr related is welcome and this I would say fits that description pretty well. Take a good look on Queen Kristina of Sweden, if you want a grave thats really morbid, all made up by skulls and other symbols of death and decay. | |

| Like a lot of others I think that GW overuse skulls, but in a graveyard dedicated to the god of death I don't mind it at all. | |

| He is the god of dreams and death. His gardens are gardens with black rose. They are simple and small. The dead shall rest and not sit on the fences or walls...
Its a graveyard which is in Sylvania, but not a well tempered rose garden of Morr. A Necromant perhaps would like to put skulls everywhere around him. A priest of morr would do nearly everything to put the dead to rest and would remove all skulls which lay in the open, to bury them...
I like this terrain piece, but i wouldn't give it to the folk of the empire, but to vampires or other undeads.

I am planning on painting most of them as if they were carved into the stone, as opposed to actual skulls.

| The mail arrived with my Garden of Morr! It's a very nice set. I took some pics of the different sprues to show them to you... There are four sprues in the kit: The main sprue, there are two of these in the set... The gate, statue and walls... The bases of the different mausolea... There is a lot of detail on this set, though some of the walls/panels of the mausolea are awefully smooth... It's a lot better than the previous scenery piece I bought (Witchfate Tor) and should give plenty of options. I admit, it's spiky and there are skulls everywhere but most of these can easily be painted as if they were part of the masonry and thus sculpted/carved from stone... | |
