| VERY COOL STUFF! I REALLY like the flag idea, but I think I'd go for removable flags with the heraldry of the champions fighting in The Arena...notice how simple ideas become more complicated. | |

| Removable flags might have been a good idea, but I ended up going with five permanent ones. Von Kurst, thanks for pointing me toward the Warhammer Empire resource page. With that in mind, these might look familiar: [img] [/img] A few Mercenaries and Sisters of Sigmar look on as their respective champions prepare to duke it out in the pit below. Surrounding the arena are flags representing different provinces of the Empire. [img] [/img] The fighters face-off. [img] [/img] Top view. If you were a bird's eye, then this is how you would watch the fight. [img] [/img] The Sigmarite Patriarch was victorious! He celebrates his victory with his warband. And yes, he is in fact wearing sunglasses. I declare this arena to be "finished". I may add a few decorations here and there as time goes on, but right now I'm moving on to new projects. I still wanna do that treehouse... | |

| Subject: Platform House Fri 6 Aug 2010 - 10:29 | |
| I have something new to show you guys.... [img] [/img] [img] [/img] It's a house! On a platform! Some credit goes to FKSN for inspiration, and a friend of mine who painted the building for me. [img] [/img] [img] [/img] Of course, a nice house like this won't stay unoccupied for long. My Reiklanders went to check it out... [img] [/img] [img] [/img] ...but once again some Skaven came along to crash the party. Geez, get your own house, skaven! The platform is just over 2" tall, the height of a normal building floor. Each stair can hold a model with a standard base. The dimensions are roughly 5" x 5" x 7 1/2". I used spray-on wall texturing for this building, and I'm pleased with the results. I do think I could have done a bit better job with the stonework on the platform, so any tips in that area would be greatly appreciated. Next up is the tree house, I swear! So um... stay tuned for that. | |

| A TREEHOUSE?? [img] [/img] [img] [/img] Yes, a treehouse. Still needs work, but I ran out of wood... imagine that! I figured that since most medieval towns were supposed to have a town square with a large oak tree, then Mordheim gets one, too. Except this tree is dead... and someone built a treehouse. 'Cause, y'know, there's no HOA or code enforcement to tell them not to. | |

| VERY COOL IDEA & nicely modeled to boot! From the architectural style, it looks like some Goblins wanted a room with a view . I hope you manage to get some more wood; this is JUST TOO GOOD to let it go unfinished. | |

| I'm glad you guys like the tree house! I do still need to make a lower platform I think, because as it stands now there's no real way up there. The bottom platform is about 7" above the base, and the upper platforms are about 10" high. If you're way up there, you better hope you don't fall 'cause that's D3 S10 hits you're taking! Makes the Acrobat skill seem like a pretty good deal! I've got the stones around the base painted, but I'm still out of wood. Rest assured, though, I'll post a picture as soon as it's finished. In the meantime, here are a few photos I took at our last game session: [img] [/img] [img] [/img] We had some good building-to-building vertical connections going, but my ultimate ideal is to make it possible to cross the board without touching the ground. Now, you may say that's a "lofty" goal, but I think it can be done with enough tall and platform-compatible buildings. | |

| I love the tree house, what a great idea! Games that get above street level are always my favorite, and your goal isn't unreasonable if you make some platforms from that 2 inch foam. | |

| Treehouse complete! As per the norm, there will be no girls allowed. [img] [/img] [img] [/img] To enforce this rule, we hired Curt as the doorman... the treehousedoormanguy...something. [img] [/img] Unfortunately, Curt was quickly overrun by angry Sigmarite Sisters and taken Out of Action. He rolled a 3 on his post-battle roll, so doctors expect him to recover just fine. What comes next? Thinking of a stable, or an archery range, a tavern... maybe even a dice tower, who knows? | |

| I like the Idea of being able to run accross town without touching the ground. I think if you keep making more buildings and make your town a little more crowded it will work a little better, but it looks like it would work now. | |

| What has BBA been up to? I've been working on a new building, that's what. But first, I went ahead made a platform from that 2" foam. [img] I painted it gray, then went over it with a watered-down black paint. I decided that since I didn't have the tools, material, or patience to carve individual stonework into the whole thing, I would try something a bit simpler. It is equal on all sides, and each stair fully supports a normal-sized model base. Okay, but what about that building? Well, I've started work on a stable. Have a look. [img] [img] I know, it's hard to tell at this stage, but the bottom level will have 4 stalls for horses. Trying to decide what color to paint this, and at the moment I'm thinking about Yellow. Any suggestions? | |

| I really like the tree fort. Lots of gaming potential. I am interested to see the completed stables as well. The platform looks very playable. It might match your buildings better with some stonework added.

| Though I completely agree that the platform would look better with carved stonework, I really, really, don't want to be the one to do it! The foam I have on hand (white insulation) isn't very cooperative, and it has a tendency to break into flakes when I try to carve it. I think that next time I might have better luck trying with the pink or the blue stuff. The stables are still underway, but I have made some progress with the woodwork. I also put together a Plague Cart for a friend of mine that plays the Carnival of Chaos. To buy the GW miniature it costs about $50.00 plus shipping. To make it yourself, it costs about 3 hours, one beer, and 4 Lego wagon wheels. Here's the GW version: [img] [/img] And here's my version (unpainted) with my WIP stables in the background: [img] [/img] [img] [/img] So it still needs to be based and painted and everything, but I'm leaving to final touches to him. I'll try and post pics of it again when it's all finished. As for the stables, I wanted to have them ready for painting by Friday, but that's unlikely to happen at this point. But rest assured that I will finish them (eventually). Thanks for the feedback, this site is a great motivator. | |

| Thanks again for all the great comments, guys. Here's where I am on the stables: [img] [/img] [img] [/img] [img] [/img] As you can see, there are two doors that currently lead to a sudden drop. The lower one will lead out to an exterior staircase and the upper one will open out to a ruined balcony. It's taking quite a while to complete this one as I find myself spending at least twice as much time thinking about what to do next as actually doing it. Anyone care to offer some constructive criticism and/or advice? | |

| I know it's been a while, but I want to share what I've done on the stables so far: [img] [/img] [img] [/img] [img] [/img] Also, since I have the good fortune of being in a gaming group with multiple players making their own terrain (most of which looks better than mine), I thought I'd show a pic of our latest table setup: [img] [/img] It was just the way I like it: elevated platforms connecting nearly everything to something. Most of the fighting was either on these planks or inside ruins rather than on open ground. | |

I believe the sign should read: 'Only members with "members".' Kickass table. Great work on your buildings and treehouse.

LOL! I like it, an exclusive members-only treehouse; a gentlemens club of sort. Of course, we can't really count on ruthless Mercenaries, bloodthirsty Cultists, or psychotic Witch Hunters to act like gentlemen can we? DeafNala: I think the treehouse is my favorite too. It gets more compliments at the game store than anything else I've made, even from people who don't play tabletop games. It was certainly the most fun to make... One day I'd like to make a treehouse for real, but I'm not sure if I'd be allowed to build it that high!
