Hired Swords from the World of Warhammer Empty
PostSubject: Hired Swords from the World of Warhammer   Hired Swords from the World of Warhammer Icon_minitimeMon 21 Sep 2009 - 23:23

Hi all, here are a number of Hired Swords and Dramatis Personae that I wrote up a while back to post on the Specialist Games forum, but it went down before I did. They're up there now and I thought I'd share them with you guys too. They're mostly taken straight from Warhammer Fantasy Battle, conceptually, although the Dramatis Personae have various other influences.

One of the DP's was written for the Devil's Den challenges that the SG forums used to hold, so there's a chance you guys have seen him already.

Let me know if you think there are any serious balancing issues with any of these guys, and how the hiring/upkeep fees look:

Alonso Quixano
70 gc to hire the pair, 20 upkeep
A noble hailing from distant Estalia, Alonso Quixano has ventured into the City of the Damned to earn honor and fame slaying evil monsters in the name of chivalry. Past his prime and off his rocker, Alonso is somewhat unpredictable and is accompanied by his "young squire," Pancho Sanza.
May Be Hired: Alonso Quixano and Pancho may be hired by any good-aligned warband. They must be hired as a pair.
Rating: Alonso and Pancho add 40 to the warband's rating.

Equipment: Alonso wears heavy armor, a helmet, and a lucky charm and carries a shield, lance, and sword. Alonso rides a horse.
Pancho carries a mace and a short bow, and wears a lucky charm. Pancho rides a donkey.

Skills: Alonso has the following skills - Ride (horse), Unstoppable Charge, Combat Riding.
Pancho has the following skills - Ride (donkey), Horse Archer.

Special Rules:
Quixotic: So engulfed in his quest for honor, Alonso does not have to take a fear check when charging or being charged by an opponent that causes Fear. Additionally, as long as Alonso is not Out Of Action, Pancho automatically passes any Leadership tests he is required to take.
Monster-slayer: When fighting against a large creature in close combat, Alonso will always wound on a roll of 4 or better.
"A Giant, Pancho!": Whenever Alonso declares a charge, roll a die before moving him. On a roll of 1, he has convinced himself that some nearby structure is a giant beast, and he will charge the nearest building or terrain piece if there is one within range. Place Alonso in base contact with the structure and he suffers a Strength 3 hit.
Devoted: Alonso and Pancho may only be hired as a pair. Pancho will only stay with the warband as long as Alonso does - if Alonso leaves for any reason then so does Pancho. However, if Pancho dies Alonso will remain, but his Leadership is reduced to 7 and he always subtracts 1 from his "A Giant, Pancho!" rolls.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kaptin Spigtrigg & His Crymsin Crew
60gc 25 upkeep
Some goblins live a miserable life as the underlings of their larger and stronger greenskin brothers, the Orks. Some form their own communities in the forests and mountains of the old world. Spigtrigg and a few similarly deranged goblins commandeered a Tilean merchant ship and became pirates. Constantly on the lookout for treasure and (more frequently) trouble, Spigtrigg inevitably found his way into the City of the Damned, where he sells his services to the highest bidder.

May be hired: Kaptin Spigtrigg & his Crymsin Crew may be hired by any Goblin or Skaven warband, Dark Elves, Pirates, Mercenaries, or Tileans. They may not be hired by any warband containing an ork (who wouldn't put up with free-spirited goblins such as them), dwarf, or elf (other than a dark elf).

Rating: Kaptin Spigtrigg adds 30 to his warband’s rating, and each Crymsin Gobbo adds 7 plus his experience.

Equipment: Duelling Pistol, The Blunder-Stol!, Cutlass, Hook Hand, Rope & Hook, Squig Parrot.
The Blunder-Stol!: Invented by the maniac goblin himself, it is a bizarre pistol-sized blunderbuss.

Range Strength Special Rules
Special 3 Shot, Fire Once

Shot: Unlike a normal blunderbuss, Spigtrigg's Blunder-Stol fires in a box that is 6" long and 1" wide.
Parrot Squig: All enemies in base-to-base contact with Spigtrigg suffer a -1 on all "to hit" rolls against him. The Parrot Squig may never be lost or stolen.

Skills: Trick Shot, Swash-buckling, Cutlass Master, Sea Shanty Singer.

Special Rules:
Crew: When a warband hires Kaptin Spigtrigg, they may hire up to 3 Crymsin Gobbos along with him. They are treated exactly like any other hired sword. If Spigtrigg leaves the warband for any reason, roll a die for each Crymsin Gobbo. On a 1-4 the goblin stays with his captain, on a 5-6 the goblin decides to go with the warband. The same roll is made in any situation in which Kaptin Spigtrigg has to sit out of a game. A Crymsin Gobbo that opts to remain with a warband in this manner may still attack Kaptin Spigtrigg in the event that the two goblins end up on opposing warbands in the future - such is the nature of goblin "loyalty". Additionally, Crymsin Gobbos may be hired separately from Kaptin Spigtrigg as though they were normal Hired Swords.

Too big for a single post, but I thought they should just be in one thread, so here are the Hired Swords:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clan Skryre Poison Wind Globadier
40gc, 15 upkeep
May be hired: A Poison Wind Globadier may be hired by any Skaven or Undead warband, as well as Dark Elves or Possessed.

Equipment: Gas Mask, Poisoned Wind Globes, two daggers.

Gas Mask: The mask worn by the Poison Wind Globadier makes him immune to his own gas globes as well as those of any other Poison Wind Globadier. In addition, he is immune to the effects of a plague censer, which is treated as a normal flail against him.
Poison Wind Globes: The Globadier carries several glass globes filled with noxious gases into battle, which he can throw at his enemies.

Range Strength Special Rules

8” Special Fragile, Poison,
Inaccurate

Fragile: If the Globadier is Knocked Down or Stunned roll a die. On a roll of 4 one of his globes shattered and any model within 1” must take a toughness test or suffer 1 wound without armor saves (magical armor saves are still allowed). A roll of 6 is always a failure. Models that are immune to poison are not affected.

Poison: Any model within 2” of the location in which the Poison Wind Globe lands must take a toughness check or suffer 1 wound without armor saves (magical armor saves are still allowed). A roll of 6 is always a failure. Models that are immune to poison are not affected.
Inaccurate: If a Poison Wind Globadier rolls a miss when throwing a globe, the globe will scatter D6 inches in a random direction from his intended target and explode there.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dwarf Mountaineer
40gc, 15 upkeep
May be hired: A Dwarf Mountaineer may be hired by any good-aligned dwarf or human warband.

Equipment: Blunderbuss, axe, light armor, and skis.

Special Rules:
Skis: When moving downhill, Mountaineers treat every 2" down as 1" of movement. If moving downhill, a Mountaineer may move up to 6" down and still fire his blunderbuss in the shooting phase.
Mountaineer: The Dwarf Mountaineer does not suffer movement penalties for moving through woodland terrain.

Skills: The Dwarf Mountaineer may learn Shooting and Dwarf skills.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Squig Hopper
25gc, 10 upkeep
May be hired: Squig Hoppers are stark raving mad and will work for almost anyone. Unless a warband’s rules specifically state that they may not use hired swords, any warband other than Beastmen, Carnival of Chaos, Sisters of Sigmar, Witch Hunters, Ostlanders, Elves or Dwarfs may hire the Squig Hopper. Additionally, Averlanders and Marienbergers consider themselves above associating with such base and savage creatures as squigs, and will not hire a Squig Hopper. Any warband containing a dwarf or elf hired sword (other than a dark elf) may not hire a Squig Hopper either.

Equipment: The goblin rider carries a club.

Special Rules:
Hates Dwarfs: The rider is of the Night goblin variety, and as such hates all dwarfs. Note that this only applies to attacks made by the rider, not the squig.
Immune to Psychology: Perhaps sometimes to the dismay of its goblin rider, squigs are truly fearless and will bounce into anything. Although the rider may not want to charge into a rat ogre, he has no way of stopping his unruly mount from doing so. The Squig Hopper is immune to psychology.
Boiiing!: The Squig Hopper has a movement of 2D6 inches. Each turn, roll a die. On a roll of 2-6 the controlling player chooses the direction in which to move the Squig Hopper. On a roll of 1 the Squig Hopper moves in a random direction, and counts as charging any model in its path, friend or foe. The goblin rider may opt not to attack if the squig charges a friendly character.
Rider & Squig: When attacking, both the goblin and the squig may use their respective profiles to make attacks. For purposes of attacking and wounding the Squig Hopper, treat them as a single model with toughness 3 and 1 wound. The night goblin may never dismount the squig, and as such has no movement value.

Skills: The goblin rider has spent far too much time bouncing around on squigs, and is too addled to learn much of anything useful. If he rolls a skill on the advancement chart, the player must choose one statistic to increase instead. This may not bring the goblin above his racial maximum, and statistic increases only apply to the goblin rider, not the squig.

They look ok to me, i quite like Alonso's special rule 'A Giant, Pancho!' as i think it would add more flavor to him. I would say that Kaptin Spigtrigg is the DP for the Devil's Den challenge but that is just a guess.

I like these! I know that this is picking at straws Hired Swords from the World of Warhammer Icon_razz but would it be fluffy to also prevent Kaptin Spigtrigg & His Crymsin Crew from being hired if there is an Orc hired sword / DP in the warband as goblins who have found their freedom wouldn't want to hang around an orc who would boss them around (I know that there are currently no such rules but there might be in the future).

That's an interesting point - one that I hadn't really thought of. I initially hesitated for two reasons - one being that by the same logic he couldn't really be hired by Da Mob, and the other being that (supposedly) being a DP Kaptin Spigtrigg has enough infamy that even an ork wouldn't mess with him if they were hired by the same people. However it's a point well made, and he could still be hired by goblin-only warbands, so I think I'll make those changes.

Its a realy cool idea, haha. im having an imagination of them fighting against Orcs, or Skaven.
They would give the humoristic touch to the game

SG forums are just the "Specialist Games" forums. They're the GW-official forums for all of their secondary games like Mordheim, Necromunda, Blood Bowl, and Inquisitor.

You can find them here, although at least the Mordheim section is far less active than this forum is. Still there's some interesting stuff bouncing around.
