Ok...so my brother and I are having a little argument. he refuses to play mordheim with more then 2 teams.

I really want to do 3 man FFA with my little brother, him and myself.

His argument: Bad past experiences
"Not balanced that way" Evil or Very Mad
it's the rule not the exception Suspect
Hasn't been playtested that way Rolling Eyes
doesn't say in the rulebook Mad

My response: That was when we didn't know the rules
Plenty of people play it that way
You know how?
Oh come on................

I think we should try it again...but he wont listen.........any thoughts on the matter?

I have been partaking in loads of campaigns through the years.

I am in fact in a campaign right now, and we have had several 3 ways and four way fights.

There is nothing to it, do a skirmish. If a warband routs, the others fight on, untill only one warband stands.

There are rules for 3+ player mordheim games in the 2002 annual I believe. A couple of things like forming alliances allows you to run between eachother and shooting into combat is allowed if all combatants are part of non-allied warbands etc.

In my experience, the standard 3-way battles end up in one person sitting back and sweeping up the ones who've been fighting. Whether it be on purpose or due to the way it played out, it almost always happens. Any scenario where the objective is dead in the center of the board is definately one to steer clear of.

When I played a 3+ player scenario I played to route as quickly as possible. Maybe the scenarios were extremely poorly laid out, or maybe you'll find a good scenario. I know in necromunda the multiplayer scenarios I derived from the creative side of my brain was a mix between multi player skirmish, small subsets of existing warbands, and NPC (or arbitrator) additions. Anotherwords the goal wasn't to just kill the enemies, but killing enemies was a way you could achieve the goal.

Well if he doesn't want to I doubt we can persuade him...

The game can and is played in all sorts of ways that were not immediately thought of by the original authors. As far as the original authors condoning multi-player games that's what the Chaos in the Streets article was all about. (White Dwarf #242 and reprinted in the Best of Town Cryer and the Mordheim Annual 2002.) Many people learn the game in multi-player games.

I would avoid the alliances parts of the rules but that's my prejudice. I really don't like 2 warbands ganging up on one and then getting to 'share' victory. I don't mind the ganging up part but none of this sharing crap for me! Fight to the end! Smile

Von Kurst has dully noted the rules are there and they have been playtested and have been used for over 9 years. Most people don't read them but the rules are there.

To be fair, to some extent, I share your brother's view. Mordheim was designed for one-on-one games. Sure, some multiplayer rules were bolted on later on, but they really change the dynamic. Personally, I'm happiest playing it as a two player game with the occasional foray into multiplayer games. After all, variety is the spice of life and all that.

Tell your brother that if he's looking for balance he's shopping in the wrong game. Mordheim is wonky and unbalanced; that's what makes it carefree and fun. I've played in many many Multiplayer games. This Summer we even played a couple 8 player scenarios. Things aren't always "balanced" in these sorts of situations, but they were all fun anyways.
