Measuring From the Center or the Edge?

When physically moving models, measuring from the front or the middle is irrelevant, so long as you do it consistently. However, when checking to see if a model is within 2" of a forest edge and therefore eligible to shoot and to be shot at, it becomes incredibly important. For this and similar issues (ballistics range, intercept zone, all alone test, etc.) do you measure from the model's base edge or its center?

Always measure to the edge of the base.

Yep, edge for me as well. Too many years of playing WFB/40k not to measure from the edge.

Yes. Everything other than the edge is totally impracticable.

Strange though...the guy in my playgroup who brought up the point was citing 40K and "every other wargame he'd ever played" as being "measure from the middle." Is there a vague rule or a hazy line in any 40K material that might have caused the misreading?

Wow, never heard of that before. If there is any game telling the players to measure from the middle I have to question the authors' sanity. Unless they have been playing with empty bases they would have surely realized at some point during playtesting that with a model standing on the base you can't even always get to the middle of the base at all. That's just stupid.

I just had a look in the 40K 5th edition rulebook and it says that you measure from the edge, from the point closest to the target.

The base is what you measure from and to. All GW games are this way. Sounds more like a "house rule" than anything else.

The base is supposed to represent the same the model is taking up on the gaming table as bases block LOS.

Some games determine LOS by drawing a line "from the middle" of the firing models base to the target, maybe this caused confusion for the player referenced above.

I too go from Edge to Edge as the rules say.

However I wanted to mention that as long as you are consistent how you do it durning a game that is okay with me. I have played with people who also like to measure from middle to middle and I always just tell them. I am fine with that as long as you ALWAYS do that while we are playing on this game.

I can see the reasoning as to why some would prefer middle to middle, as there is little to no doubt if you can reach something ...as compared to edge to edge where sometimes you are just nicking the piece.

Personally I like to measure from my edge to the other players middle that way there can never be doubt!

there is one thing i remember from the whfb rulebook (dwarves, new edition) that for practical reasons you measure from the point of the steamgun (gyrocopter)

but even that is iffy

In GW games rules where you measure from the gun are generally associated with vehicles that do not have a base.
