| I have a question : - the rulebook says if a fig become a talentuous lad, it keeps its experience. - but we found it unfair, because if one becomes talentuous with juste 2 XP points and another with 9 points, they will not have the same evolution : . the first one gain just a throw on experience table, but have potentially 3 throws if it gains 7 XP points and have 9 XP points. . the second gained 3 throws with its 9 XP points.
So the second is one evolution less with the same XP ! We have an house-rule which says that a model who becomes talentuous with 5 XP have 4 XP as a heroe, with 9 XP have 6 XP as a heroe, etc...
I ask you if you use the original rule or something else?

| It's not unfair. It's a tabletop game. Rolling dice is "unfair" in general. Actually it's just random. Rolling a chest wound for your favourite hero while you enemy's hero gets frenzy from the madness result is also "unfair". This is the nature of these kinds of games and if we are honest then we will admit that we wouldn't want it any other way. We don't want all our heroes to be the same. Finally, a henchman that becomes a hero will be better than any standard hero choice you have anyways. | |

| Cianty is definitely correct. The randomness is what stops on warband from ALWAYS winning. It makes it "fair." - Lanyssa Ryssyll wrote:

House rules like that which cross all warband boundaries don't unbalance the game since they exact same change applies to all of the warbands.

| Like Ashton said, the rule can hardly unbalance the game since it applies to all warbands equaly. House rules that affect specific parts of gameplay such as shooting or close combat can easily affect gameplay because some warbands are better at shooting or close combat so they would gain a(n) (dis)advantage from them.
With that being said, your house rule COULD be a disadvantage for warbands who comprise of henchmen that gain no experience or who can't become heroes. Since your rule improves the quality of henchmen heroes, a warband with mostly "dumb" henchmen (such as Undead e.g.) could be at a disadvantage against all the other warbands who now gain better heroes. This is a very minor factor though and affects only one warband if any at all. So if your house rule does make your games more fun and you feel better then just go with it and have fun. That's what we're all in for.

| Thanks for your reply, it's the way we play that import, and we love that way ! We play a lot of house-rules like that, and I'm quite surprised that you seems to play "pure" rules | |

| You do realize that you just told the maker of an expansion pack for Mordheim that he plays the "pure rules" | |

| The point is this: there is an important difference between additional rules and re-writes. I'm all in for extending the rules set. I love the additional rules for mounted warriors, I love random happenings, I love the possibility of using wagons and boats and I love the additional warbands. I do not like re-writing the Mordheim core rules. I see a lot of this suggested on the Mordheim forums and it makes me wonder why they even play the game if they are obviously so dissatisfied with the game mechanics. Now please don't think that I mean to attack you, Lanyssa! If it makes you happy playing with those house rules then I stronly encourage you to use them! That's what this is all about. I just wanted to state my point of view towards "home-grown" rules since Ashton was so kindly alluding to the Border Town Burning project (or Mordheim Nemesis Crown, not sure).
So regarding rules re-writes my opinion is, as Stu* would say: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

| Well written cianty. I realize my post didn't turn out to be as funny of a joke as I was going for. I also like to use the straight rulebook, although I definitely have no problem "tweaking" something if it seems ridiculously cheap/broken, and everyone (in the house) agrees. - cianty wrote:

I was referring to BTB, and I meant "supplement." Doh. I haven't even heard of MNC before. - cianty wrote:

| Ashton, when I said "pure rules", I'm talking about the Mordheim core rules But I understand the point of view of Cianty, and I like the Stu's sentence he quoted ! I just adapted the rules with my oponents, we tested a lot of re-written rules, and we have kept some of them for our campaigns Perhaps you'll try these rules in future campaign and will love it too | |

Ts ts ts, you should, my friend. The Mordheim Nemesis Crown supplement was done for Mordheim players who wished to take part in the 2007 Warhammer summer campaign "Nemesis Crown" (like "Storm of Chaos" and others earlier). It features warbands, random happenings, scenarios, hired swords and dramatis personae fitting the setting and was produced by the Mordheim_2500 group on behalf of Andy Hall (chief of Specialist Games). Due to a lack of time I wasn't able to contribute as much as I would have loved to do unfortunately, but I did do all the layout work . Commissioned by Andy Hall and with people such as Mark Havener (Orcs&Goblins, Dwarfs, Random Happenings, Chaos on the Streets, ...) working on the MH NC supplement, this is the closest thing to an official Games Workshop product for Mordheim we have seen in years. - Ashton wrote:

Werekin = werecreature = Stu's online nick. He's a huge Norse fanatic and he wrote the excellent study on Chaos Marauder Tribes featured in the Letters of the Damned issue 2 (which is actually an extract from the Border Town Burning background chapter).
