PostSubject: Which Warband, hmm??   Tue 27 Nov 2007 - 1:46

Im starting in a campaign soon, and I just cant settle my mind on warband, and hoping you can help me decide.

I love all things mordheim, all aspects. I love shooting, but CC is where the real damage is.

So Im looking for a new warband, I have looked at things like the Norse warband, but it seems very overpowered IMO, but I so love the theme. These are my favorite, but I dont want to win because of a overpowered list.

I have looked through the Beastmen Raiders, but they so do lack skills and every aspect of shooting.

Dwarves are my favorite race in warhammer, but I think mobility is very essensial in Mordheim.

Most human warbands lack character and theme IMO. But this can be easily made, and hired swords can bring alot too...

What could I do, I would love an okay close combat warband with atleast some form of ranged combat too??

You could play marauders of Chaos. They can be personalized to a huge extent. If you choose the Kurgan tribe you even have access to bows.

You can find rules for them in the LOD#2 or on the Border Town Burning website (see my signature).

You want Close Combat you say? You want Style you say?

Go ORCS!

For once I must disagree with my friend Cianty Smile Although I think the Marauder models are great, offer a lot of conversion possibilities and the warband is certainly fun to play, I think you should get an "official" warband first.

This way you can be sure, it will be accepted by all players. No one will be able to blame you for bringing potentially "unbalanced" or "unfair" warbands to the table. You can always start an unofficial warband as a second one, because you love it's style.

Let me also add a little remark, because you brought up the issue:
Clearly CC is where the OBVIOUS damage lies. But do NOT underestimate a player that has 5-6 proficient bowmen under his command. A guy who can kill your champion from a distance, and reduce your possessed to ONE wound before they even get a chance to roll a die, is a force that is to be reckoned with. It is a pain in the ass. And believe me, I am dreading Tortiou's Reiklander for precisely THAT reason Very Happy But maybe i just say that because deep in my heart i am a wood elf rendeer

Tom is right. You really shouldn't start with an unofficial warband. Although, in my local GW store they have banned Mordheim, so we can play at our homes only anyways. So it doesn't matter what warbands we play.

Forget about shooting. We have just finished our Mordheim session today. My Tilean Merchant warband sucked big time. You don't need to know the exact list, all you need to know is I had two marksman heroes (Lad's got talent) with BS 4/5, both had quickshot. And I had two henchmen, also BS 4/5. All were armed with crossbows.
It just didn't work out. It never works out.
I hate shooting in Mordheim. It's pointless.

The biggest problem is probably that you cannot increase your number of attacks and strength properly. Your stuck with your BS and your weapon's Strength. Models that are focused on close combat can make use of the weapons/items/profie advances way better than shooters. Or so do we believe. Maybe it has something to do with my unrealistic bad luck when it comes to rolling the dice. But there's a reason no one else in my gaming group is playing humans. All humans can do is shoot. And shooting sucks in Mordheim.

There is one rule of thumb to go by: don't play humans. Any other warband is way better in close combat. Play Orcs & Goblins or Beastmen (although the Greenskins are probably more interesting for unbiased people but I have a strong personal attachement to Beastmen as they were my first Warhammer army).

DISCLAIMER: Please note that everything I wrote in this post is my personal opinion and therefore should be viewed with caution. However, my claims stem from the experience I made and others in my group made - and at least we've been playing Mordheim since its first release. Still everybody is welcome to disagree. Flame on!

Wow, your unlucky pirat (love all the smilies)

Thanks alot, thats a good idea. I'll have a look at Orcs & Gobbos.
I was thinking about Kislev, based over my idea, in the theme thread, of Wyrdstone hunters, alot of different personalities (Gunslinger, Runner, Archer, Brawler and so on) but I dont know how much time I have to convert a whole warband from scratch...

T4 crossbows is nothing to sneeze at... Wink

But Im one of those guys how cant settle his mind, so I will change mind like 5 times aday... Mad

Might as well grab an orc box, gobbo box, and perhaps the Black orc box or warboss box... just for conversion... Cool

That's absolutly right, I also dislike the fact that you have only one characteristic increase for shooting- the BS. And you only have 6 skills(and you often can't us all of them)
For Melee, you have Strength, Attacks, WS, and of course all the Combat and Strength skills.

To return to the topic... unfortunatly I have no real idea, but why don't you choose skaven? They have enough slings, and the rat ogre is a real melee monster.

Hehe, Thanks guys...

Twisting my mind in every direction there is, and still cant make my mind.... I never will.
Rolling Eyes

Well I dont agree that shooting isent good in Mordheim, I think its very powerful, even more so in the start of a campaign. Perhaps you cant do as much damage when people start getting T6 W2 models, but just about that time is when you need a new warband IMO, because thats when the balance of the game becomes broken.

Broken as in there will always be people that are more lucky and roll better, so they will eventually get exponentially better then any other warband. But of couse 2v1 can take care of that.

But I myself love when you start getting 2-3 upgrades for your warband, as this makes them more individual, instead of 4 copies of eachother...

Cianty: They banned mordheim from the store? What the hell for? Oh well =/ Stores are great places to get new players into the group, too.

I am going to go the opposite of Cianty and say, take a human warband! More specifically, take one of the "newer" human warbands; kislev, ostlander, averlander. They are all very characterful, and they have a good mix of special troops, CC, and shooting. The only downside is you'll have to e-bay the miniatures you want, or convert, as most of the figs are not available from GW. =/

They only want the three core games (Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40k, Lord of the Rings) played in there. From what I have heard the problem here is not general GW policy but the ass-in-chief of the GW store. He could easily allow (or even organise) Mordheim games but obviously he doesn't want to.

Our local store allows playing any GW-game, but for Mordheim you'd have to bring your own scenery, so we can as well play at home.

Well, it's cool that they allow it at least. You can see the scenery under the tables in the store but they simply don't want anyone to play Mordheim.

That's absolutly strange. I can't imagine why they're doing this.

In Cologne, they often try to help if you tell them you are going to play one of the specialist games, but building a hole Mordheim table would be a little bit too much work.
Anyway, they have started a very small campagne of Battlefleet Gothic, allthough I'm not sure if it is still on.
