Hello, in a recent campaign game, the question was brought up as to if certain heroes could search after the game. It's obvious any heroes that go out of action cannot search, but what if the game doesn't allow you your full warband? If there are any heroes that do not participate in the game, are they allowed to explore? For the example, only one hero and one henchmen group were allowed to play in the game.

Only Heroes that took part in the previous battle may search for rare items after it. It is not specificied that explicitly in the rulebook but I'm very confidant that that is how it is meant to be. Think about it: when do Heroes not take part in battle? Mostly because they suffered some serious injury that causes them to miss the next D3 battle. If they were able to visit the merchants and search for rare items in that time they might as well join their comrades in battle.

I agree with you on all of that and take the same standpoint, however a couple of people are arguing that since you roll at random for which heroes arrive, its not as though they are injured (although I still believe it means they are off somewhere else and so cannot search). If anyone can come up with anything that states they cannot do so, please post it as we have a couple of people here still pushing for their heroes to be able to search.

I am under the impression that you referring to a certain scenario that allows only certain Heroes to take part, however, I have no clue which? Why don't you just say which scenario you were playing? Context might be helpful.

It is because I do not know which scenario it was, another person was running the game. I believe it is on the specialist games site in which its a multiplayer game and you try to steal shards from a central mausoleum and zombies appear for every shard taken. If that doesn't help, take the scenario from the rule book, number 9, surprise attack, in which each hero has to roll a 4+ each turn if he didn't start the game to have a chance to appear. If he never appears, he was never put out of action, so does that mean he can explore for wyrdstone?

If the games ends before the last Heroes got a chance to enter the board I'd still definately let those heroes roll for exploration and rare items. Technically they did take part in the battle. The scenario describtion says what those warriors were doing in the meantime.. maybe they got lost along the way in the forest or something and therefore arrived later. They were on the way and they do rejoin the rest of the warband sooner or later. So they should get the +1 XP for surviving (ie taking part in) the battle, roll an exploration dice and be allowed to search for rare item and dramatis personae.

Thank you for the reply. Would you also let heroes roll for my first example? The other heroes are purposely not a part of the battle and not on their way, and never have a chance of showing up. For these reasons I would say they do not get a chance to roll. I would show you the exact scenario but the specialist games site is down.

If they are not meant to take part in the scenario at all (like the Last Orders scenario e.g. where you only use a part of the warband), then I would not allow them to roll any dice in the exploration phase because they stayed at the camp and made "something else". However, searching for rare items should be fine (unless they had to miss the battle anyways because of serious injuries, of course). Since they stayed at the camp it makes sense to allow them to search for items since they had nothing better to do anyways. Again, I would not allow them to take part in the exploration phase because they cannot join the other Heroes who did take part in the battle and do the exploring on the way back to the camp.

Please note that all of the above is my own opinion and how I deal with it in my group. Since there are no official rules for this you have to agree upon a house rule with your gaming group.
