PostSubject: Ashen Pettyflesh   Sun 25 Jun 2017 - 3:09

Got a player in my group that wants to use Ashen Pettyflesh from
Cutthroat's Den Encampment rules to get new recruits. I am unsure
how to handle it, exactly.

Rules says Ashen will sell anyone to anybody, does that mean the
available slave does not necessarily come from the same warband list?

Another line says this bypasses racial maximums. That mean more
than 6 heroes? or can have 3 of a 0-2 type? or just can exceed normal
warband model limits?

And lastly, it says can only buy one slave at this time. That mean come
back after another game and possibly get another or just one period?
Player argues it is come back after another game or it would have said
only one slave at a time not this time.

I am trying to be nice to the guy and let him use Ashen but could really
use some help in going about it.

No clue who you are talking about really, but I avoid encampments rules like the plague. And from the sound of things I think that is a really good idea.

Link to rules (or a quote)?

TC#29 pg 21

Quote :

ASHEN PETTYFLESH THE SLAVER:
You may visit the slaver to add to your
warband. Ashen sells just about anyone he
can get a hold of and to anyone that wants to
buy. If you are searching for a new recruit to
add to your warband stop by he may have
what you're looking for. Roll 2d6 on the
following chart. lf you like what he offers you
may purchase them at 2x the regular cost and
above your racial maximum. (You may only
purchase one slave at a time this way)
D6
2 Hero
3-5 Henchman (not including large creatures or animals)
6 Large creature (ie Rat ogre)
7-9 Henchman (not including large creatures or animals)
10 Hero
11 Animal
12 Large creature (ie Rat ogre)

Well those rules are clear as mud.

If you want it to, I suppose it does. If you don't want it to, it doesn't. Which I think is the answer to the next questions as well. These are incomplete experimental rules that were the last gasp of official Mordheim. Some folks see them as useful and interesting, I see a big mess of bad idea.

Yeah, they were the very last of the Town Cryers.
I think they are a brilliant idea (I am very much into narrative games) but they are very experimental. So you have to go to town on them, and fill in the loopholes, before they are usable. At least thats what we do.
Werekin used them as a baseline to his post-battle Infamous Haunts ruleset (which is much more balanced). These Encampments can be crazy deadly due to the Town Encounters, even if your warriors are just trying to buy some specific rare items. And some encamps are way deadlier than the benefits they offer!scratch

I agree with VK: the "gaming-group, rules-discussion consensus" approach is required. Just like running an RPG with a Games Master: some things are just way off the deep end. Neutral

In my group we interpreted the 'exceed racial maximum' part to mean that you could exceed limits for any given hero/henchman e.g. if you had 2 Champions in a Middenheimer warband you could use Ashen Pettyflesh to hire a third.

GW is notorious for writing ambiguous rules and are *particularly* bad at mixing in flavour text with rules and I am pretty sure the "Ashen sells just about anyone he can get a hold of and to anyone" thing is simply another example of that. Certainly when *my* group tried out being able to hire anyone it opened a horrible can of worms and seemed just about made of ambiguities and edge-cases. In a short and casual story-oriented campaign it could be good for a few laffs and/or story generating, but I really can't recommend allowing it in any kind of long or vaguely balanced campaign.

For the "you may only purchase one slave at a time" can you interpret this to mean you can hire multiple slaves at once? The first answer is 'yes'. The second answer is 'don't'. If you *do* use this interpretation you *will* end up with warbands that are e.g. Undead with 6 Vampires or Cult of the Possessed with 3 Magisters and 3 Possessed and other craziness. Anyone who starts winning and getting more gold will *keep* winning and it becomes harder and harder to catch up to them.

That being said, if your campaign is only short then the 2x cost is not a *bad* balancer and someone that gets a lot of their best heroes will have a lot less money for good weapons and armour.

If you are allowing only 1 slave to be hired at any given time you might be tempted to disallow the hireing of an additional hero. Funnily enough (in my group at least) we found this doesn't actually make things all that broken. Merc Captains *can* take anything (as far as skills are concerned) but they *can't* take *everything* so they are ok. Cult of the Possessed with an extra Magister aren't that much more scary either. The people that get the best value out of a second leader are the Undead, and, lets face it, they can use all the help they can get. Anyway, we never found anything unfun with any of the official warbands. For unofficial warbands you will have to sort it out for yourselves.

We did make a few house-rules for him though.

Firstly, we made a rule that if a hero of the same type of your slave dies then your slave becomes part of your warband and you may hire an additional slave of that kind e.g. if you have 2 Champions and 1 Champion slave and one of the Champions dies then the Champion Slave becomes simply a Champion and another Champion Slave may be hired.

Secondly we made it so that you can have 1 Hero slave, but as many Henchman slaves as you like.

Lastly, we made it so that you *may* roll a d6 to see how many xp points are available to henchmen hired from Ashen Pettyflesh when you visit him. This it is in addition to any xp rolled by your leader.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate the insight, Lord 0. Think we will just have to sit down as a group and work it out. Will take a look at the Infamous Haunts again. Maybe I can convince the player to go another route.

edit: seems link on Liber Malefic is leading to page saying file moved or made private. Anyone got a good link to Infamous Haunts pdf.

Hey Jhoniten. Werekin has put MiM on hold and Dropbox changed their method for sharing files so all of the links on his blog are broken. All of the MiM files are now available in my OneDrive share of Mordheim files. The link is in my signature below.
