B04 2011-10-19 Villa 1 8 x 8

I just started building terrain and wanted to do a Roman(ish) Villa

I also posted previously on this building:

A01 2011-10-30 Semi-Rural

This board went through multiple iterations:

1) Straight 2' x 2' x 1" board for "wargaming" with single color woodland scenics flock (partially visible in my prior post's older link http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/t5900-villa-october-30-2011)

2) Then I cut out four 8" x 8" modular sections to host buildings...after I figured out that was the system I would commit to

I added a stone road and cart tracks down the center, then re-flocked with GW

3) added more stone road, etc. on perimeter, which is what you see here

B01 2011-10-30 Watch Tower

Definitely need some high ground and what is more classic than a tower

Previously posted here: http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/t5901-watch-tower-october-30-2011

As you can see, tower was re-painted since it's first version...

B02 2011-09-30 Hovel

An odd shaped building module designed to "nest" with the previous watch tower

Not sure I had conceptualized 8" x 8" modular board yet

Beginning of my system of having removable levels

You'll also notice that I go back (sometimes many months later) to add finishing details, e.g. functional ladders)

My goal at the time was to crank out playable, finished terrain, even if certain (time consuming) details were missing

A02 2011-08-07 Dock

So this was my first "real" modular board

The buildings are removable, but not modular and usable on other boards

You can see that it had a complete re-paint if you check out the original post

In retrospect, I would have made this board very differently...oh well!

B03 2014-03-03 Ship

A dock needs a ship!

A03 2012-01-03 River 1 Canal

(I now realize this is out of order vis-a-vis the next post!)

This is the connection between the dock and first city board

The water was re-painted

Think first appearance on TBMF: TBD?

A04 2011-12-29 City Block Board 1

My first truly modular board, ready for modular buildings

Mistake: total board height is only 2" with ~ 1.75" playable crypt

Means can't necessarily leave figures under buildings

In retrospect would have made this a 3" high board with ~ 2.75" playable crypt/dungeon...

the little (temporary) insert is so that the boards can accept 4" x 4" quarter block modules (e.g. watch tower)

Started to experiment with more complex construction and curves

B06 2012-03-18 Apartment 1

(Slightly out of order)

My first half block module

All one piece / no removable levels since all accessible

Started thinking about livability of the (ruined) city, thus the first water fountain

(Again out of order...)

My first full block building module

B08 2012-06-02 Crater & Yard

These were made at the same time right after the half block apartment above so that I could fill in a whole block

After I started finishing more building modules they eventually became second tier modules...

B09 2012-06-02 Slavers House

As noted in the original post, this building module was "done", fully painted, and playable...but I returned to it to finish off details

So after I finished this building module my table was 2' x 3.5'

A05 2012-06-02 City Block Board 2

So I moved on to a 2' x 1' board

Also my first board with preferred height of 3" and underground playable height of ~2.75"

Made a removable center road/arch section so that I would have two 8" x 8" sections for building modules, but could also have a larger module of 8" x 20"

Little did I know...

A06 2012-06-02 Transition

How to connect my first 2" high city board with my taller 3" city board"?

Also, the second section descended to dungeon level...

You'll see in some of my prior posts that the first of the two sections had a grassy canal that I changed to tiled to host my market stalls

So I had a crazy idea!

Lot of planning for a pretty complex construction

A07 2013-05-04 City Block Board Half

Designed in part to host the apartment half block board

Yeah, that's a secret door!

Starting to think about underground/dungeon play, both as part of the table and for stand alone dungeon crawling...

A08 2012-05-04 Cavern 01

So the underground/dungeon boards have started

The "lid" is removable to access the dungeon

Originally envisioned to connect to prior board

Not shown: access to the prior transition board descending stairs...

Next cavern a little different design, with a finished basement, maybe a wizard's secret room with access to the horrors below

A12 2013-05-04 Transition 1 Half

So I now had a large gap between the city boards and the new dungeon modules

To be exact, 6" x 4' from the half board down to the dock

The next 3 boards were viewed as "temporary" to fill 2.5' of the gap

First one to line up with the 2" section of the first city board, this why the vertical brick work only goes down 1"..and only on 1 side
