| I've decided to get rid of my old board and make a new one. My old board (given to me my friend when he left this city and couldn't take it.) is nice but it's a massive 4' x 8' piece made from an old door. Storage here is an issue so I want to make something easier to store and move. My wife has given me 10 days to build it before we go to her hometown for Chinese New Year.
I bought some 60cm X 90cm foam board and I will back them onto something else for strength/stability. I was thinking I can use six 60cm X 40cm tiles to make a single 120cm X 120cm (4' X 4') board or, if less space is available/necessary, use 4 boards and an extra 20cm X 20cm piece to make a 100cm X 100cm board.
Looking at the forum, quite a few folks building boards use 1' or 2' square pieces. 2' square pieces sounds like a good idea to me. What would be the advantages of square pieces other than simplicity?
Considering that I've never built a board before, am I right in thinking that 10 days might not be enough to finish it? I'm only thinking of texturing the with a little sand (or maybe just mix the sand into the paint as I coat it), cardboard cobblestones for the roads & market and maybe a few pools or craters.

| The big issue I ran into with 2x2 boards is that many Mordheim scenarios feature a 'center' building. If your 2x2 boards are of different heights or are made to fit together in various inventive ways that don't include a shared height at a center point, this could become an issue.
I made several 1x boards to add to the variety and to compensate for my earlier overzealousness.
Never underestimate the advantage of simplicity (especially if you are a beginner and have a time deadline).

| Thanks. I hadn't thought about elevation at all; I'd only thought about roads and rivers (namely that I don't want to add any rivers for now.) Keeping all the edges the same height seems like the logical thing to do. Adding elevation to the center of a board or two seems like an interesting idea though.
My main problem with 1' boards would be overhang that I'll get from putting these boards on the coffee table or anywhere other than the floor.

Ha! I can see that as a problem. We have a 4x4 piece of 1/4 inch MDF that serves as a base for everything, so I forget the consideration of overhang.

| Would it possible just to saw the existing board into pieces? Otherwise ten days might be too little time... | |

That was my thought too. If the current board is 4x8 then I think I would cut it into one 4x4 piece, one 2x4 piece and two 2x2 pieces. That gives you some modularity (new word!) but also one large piece if necessary. This may not, however, solve the storage issue. 10 days may be enough time depending on how much of the existing board is "finished". I put "finished" in quotations because you can get a good looking and perfectly playable board up quickly and simply but if you want to add details and character then that will be difficult to achieve in 10 days.

| My current board is in 2 4'x4' pieces. This is still a problem for storage. There are some other reasons why I'd prefer a new board:
- There is a big river and roads painted/textured across the board which is a problem for 'modularity,' though 4 4'x2' sections may be possible. I seem to have trouble uploading pictures ATM otherwise I'd show you. - The river is distracting, even when we choose to make it clear terrain. The roads were made with pebbles too, making it difficult to balance minis on. - It keeps hemorrhaging static grass. - My mates and I were talking about donating it to the games club where they usually play DnD. Otherwise basically all games are played at my place (I'm one of two people in my RPG group with an apartment big enough and the other guy doesn't play Warhammer.) Having the boards at the games club allows people to play when I'm not available. - My wife now wants the old board gone.
Looks like I'm just painting and lightly texturing 2-4 60cm X 90cm pieces for now.

| What about keeping the 4 best 2'x2' sections of the old boards? - Quote :

. That may be the simplest thing to do.

| That's about all I can manage in this time. Enough for half a board at least. Off to my wife's hometown for Chinese New Year! | |

| Yeah, two of those and you would have a great Mordheim board. The table you inherited looks nice too; to bad your wife won't let you knock it down to 2x2 sections for easy storage and keep it. | |

| Thanks and Happy Chinese New Year! (it lasts for about 15 days here. Lot's of fireworks tonight.)
The old board is nice, but I think it is best to move it out to a more central location. We've managed to generate some extra interest in Mordheim here. Hopefully other folks will get their own warbands soon.

| Thought I might post some of my WIP terrain. Some of these will be old since I haven't had much time to build recently. This one though is from last night. It's an abandoned temple that has been repurposed by some of Mordheim's new residents. | |
