Painting Foam Core to look like stone tiles.

I have followed the below tutorial and I have finished the elevated sections. (Thanks Nick from LIW!)

I took a bit of a different direction with the tiles however. I decided to use 1" square foam core tiles because I hadn't kept any of my edge pieces like he suggests. Picture below.


Does anyone have experience with painting Foam Core to look like stone? As you can see I haven't textured it, but that's probably the first step I plan on taking.
If this goes well my plan is to actually make 2'x2' squares and make this style for my whole board cover.

One way to do it is to make a ball, out of aluminum foil, and roll it across the surface which you want to paint. This will add texture. Then prime it black. Make a dark shade of gray and heavy drybrush the entire surface. Then add a little white to your grey and drybrush again. Keep adding white and drybrush until you are satisfied. 3 to 4 layers will mostly be enough.
This is how I did all of my stonework. You can also try with different sizes of aluminum ball.

Sounds like you have a plan. You might also want to either add other colours to your grey paint or do some patchy washes with greens & browns as stone is rarely solely grey. I find it looks more natural when you incorporate some more organic tints.

I think that's also a good idea, Citizen. In the subsequent painting tutorial I think he actually does something like that to the brick sides. I hope to use some lichen techniques as well to add more color to the top tile section. Thanks again for your time guys.
