I couldn't put them away after just 4 games! They need a share of the limelight for at least a little bit longer!

{Picture quality disclaimer: light was a bit rubbish and some pics are blurry Sad }

Game 1: A Clash of Battlelines
Ever since the Realmgates War ended, the Gilded Hand Free Companies had claimed the Black Dale. In the middle of the valley climbing to one of the minor doors into Greywater Fastness, the Stoneivy Arc led to the plains around the Adamantine River in Chamon. Through the Arc, minerals mined inside Greywater Fastness flowed to Venithya to be exchanged for chamonite steel tools enchanted by the Gilded Hand alchemists.

It was good trade, until the siege begun. Rumours of every door into Greywater Fastness being under attak had reached Blackrock Dale, but there Gudrun had to deal with the immediate threat of the Ironfang Orruks. For days, their crude cannons had hammered the Free Companies' outpost, and now the true assault had begun.

The Season of War DSCN1138
The Season of War DSCN1139

Gudrun knew they cannot hold for much longer, until reinforcement from Venithya could be brought in, so he ordered the Penitent Brotherhood to sneak around the orruk lines and reach Stoneivy Arc. If they could not sneak around, the crazed humans were more than able to smash their way through.

The Season of War DSCN1140

Meanwhile, Ishmael was leading the Deck Crew in a sortie to silence the one cannon that had got in range of Greywater Fastness' gate.

The Season of War DSCN1141

One of the Rotmoons mobs moved to bar the way to Stoneivy Arc. Crying their devotion to Sigmar, the Penitent Brotherhood charged headlong.

The Season of War DSCN1142

The Flagellants smashed their way through and made it for the Arc.

The Season of War DSCN1143

As the Deck Crew finally managed to press forward and pepper the cannon with their quarrels, Gudrun was crossing cutlasses with Kaptain Alunzo.

The Season of War DSCN1145
The Season of War 20160719_134512_zpsktg6mrmu

"Parley!" shouted the duardin captain. With a growl, the orruk warboss took a step back. "Let's sort this according to the code, will you? You name your champion. Tomorrow, at dawn, he will sort this bloody matter with our champion. What'd ya say?"
"Yarrrr! Tomorrow at dawn!". As the orruk retreated shouting orders, his toothy grin didn't promise anything good.

A Champion Emerges
At dawn, the orruk chanting resumed. A single word rang through the Dale.
KURGAN! KURGAN! KURGAN!
"The git!" spitted out Gudrun. "He brought in the Adm'rul himself. Roight! Cargo! You deal with him!" A muffled grunt, perhaps a laugh, was the notoriously silent ogor's reply.

The Season of War DSCN1146

The two armies lined up around the rock where their champion were trading anchor and cutlass blows.

Both champions were already bleeding from countless small wounds, when Cargo managed to latch his anchor around the hilt of Kurgan's cutlass and open up his guard. An headbutt and a forward stab was all the ogor needed to fell the massive orruk.

The Season of War DSCN1147

Shouts erupted on both sides and the two armies charged forward.

The Season of War DSCN1154
The Season of War DSCN1155
The Season of War DSCN1156

Unloading their pistols, Gudrun, Cargo and Gregorius Pecker led the Deck Crew into the Rotmoons' centre. If they could eliminate Kaptain Alunzo they might finally break the siege.

The Season of War DSCN1157

On the left, the Stokers and Ishmael took position on a narrow cliff and were able to hold off the outnumbering orruk reinforcements.

The Season of War DSCN1161

Buoyed by his victory on Kurgan, Cargo took on Kaptain Alunzo and his retinue. Alas, the trickery of El Doctoro marked the dismissal of the ogor.

The Season of War DSCN1160
The Season of War DSCN1163

An enraged Gudrun charged in. The ogor might have been unpleasant, but he was one of the best hands on the Grudgebreaker.

The Season of War DSCN1164

Unexpectedly, the orruk fall back. What treachery were they up to now?

Adm'rul Kurgan swaggered from the lines of Orruk Pirates and Privateers. He stood head-and-shoulders taller than the orruks, even the Kaptains, who followed him. He hefted his huge enchanted choppa, Da Kutlass, on his right shoulder and casually swung Deeptoof, his lucky broken anchor, with his left hand. He sauntered up to the agreed meeting point, full of his usual piratical overconfidence.

The Season of War 20160728_125120_zpsoij3iron

He squared up to Cargo, the Ogor Tyrant, and said "So mate, you ready for dis?"

"Ready." said Cargo simply and dived at Kurgan with his massive cutlass. The Adm'rul dodged the thrust and sliced, backhanded, with da Kutlass in reply.

The two of them hacked, parried, cut, feinted, kicked, blocked and bellowed at each other for a good few minutes before the rest of their respective armies remembered they were not just there as spectators!

The Rotmoons ran toward the Grudgebreakers, the starboard watch took cover behind a rocky hill on their way.

Both the champions had landed blows on their opponents by now, and the Adm'rul was very slightly worse off than the Ogor.

Cargo seized the initiative, landed a nasty headbutt on the MegaBoss and floored him.

Awesome story based battle report and pics! Maybe there is a post here somewhere that answers this but how does AoS compare in playability to the Mordheim rules? It seems you guys are having fun though either way. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks GameDoc!

As much as I love Mordheim, AoS is a better rules-set.

It has many very simple mechanics that fit together to create complexity and depth. It plays more smoothly, there is less ambiguity in the wording of the rules and there is more action in the first couple of turns than the average game of Mordheim. Scenery is really important - it doesn't just block line-of-sight - if you use it to your advantage it can win you games, if you ignore it it can cost you dearly. We play in our lunch breaks with small warband-sized armies for the most part but it scales very well without any rules-changes needed.

In the year since it was release I have not played any other games - it fulfils everything I want in a tabletop game!

Thanks for the reply. I'm curious how the war band conversion/ point resource thing works. Smoother rules sounds like it equals more fun especially if there is tactical complexity in the mix. I'll definitely check it out.

We don't use points or any kind of conversion - we just play RAW with the aim of reproducing the spirit of a Mordheim warband!

Do, the basic rules are free after all - very low entry cost if you already have some minis!

Game 3 - A Clash of Empires
Objective: Honour and Glory: Both sides earn Laurels of Victory for killing unit leaders (1), Heroes (2) and the enemy General (3), and for controlling the central scenery (1 per round).

~~~
The Rotmoons fell back from Ghyran after their run of defeats and mustered near a Realmgate in Wortbad, one of the small haunted villages that litter the Harrowmark in Shyish: The Realm of Death. There they met up with the Rumguzzler Gargants Grapeshot and Beermoth and plotted their return to Ghyran.
Unfortunately for them The Golden Rifles had been dispatched to hunt them down!
Beermoth and Grapeshot headed into the woods.
The Rotmoons were split into 2 units, one went with Da Leeva between Deathwatch Hall and the Rose & Sycthe Inn.
The rest with Degante went between the Chapel of Shyish and the other side of Deathwatch Hall.
Da Fireworks dragged their gun up on the right flank.
The Golden Rifles' Steam Tank wheezed and clanked into position opposite the looted gun while the rest of the Free Guild force formed up the other side of their Luminark.
Top notch battle reports and pics. I’ve been inspired to get the rules and war scrolls and am wondering if your group has created some house rules about unit sizes and/or make up as I see some scrolls dictate minimum number of models per unit. Keep the games rolling!
There is a rule at the start of each Warscroll compendium (and repeated in all the printed books) that says if you don't have enough models for the minimum you can use ONE under-strength unit of that type. This means you can play with new models but also stops the abusive spamming of loads of single Trolls or similar!
With Adm'rul Kurgan properly beaten and the Blackrock Gate firmly held by the Grudgebrekers, the Rotmoons had vanished from Ghyran. Gudrun had ordered to repair the demage inflicted by the Rotmoons to the outposts in the Blackrock Dale. Then a missive from the Golden Rifles, another mercenary warband Gudrun had crossed path with, reached the duardin captain. The Golden Rifles had clashed with the Rotmoons in the Harrowmark of Shyish. Apparently, they now had gargants fighting with them. A grudge being a grudge, Gudrun decide it was time settle the score with Da Leeva. "Ishmael!" boomed the duardin "Summon Olde Blue Eye! We go hunting orruks, and they've some big fellas with them!"
It took the Grudgebreakers some time to track the Rotmoons in the bleak Harrowmark, but finally they had cornered them in the small village of Wortbad, their lines bolstered by a lumbering and very drunk gargant.
The Season of War IMG_0150
The Season of War IMG_0151
Gudrun, the Stokers, Ishmael and Olde Blue Eyes, its thick shell sticky with rotten algae, formed up on the opposite side of the square held by the orruks.
The Season of War IMG_0149
Gregorius Pecker and the Deck Crew were covering the right flank, hoping to get a good enfilade angle to shot at the gargant.
The Season of War IMG_0152
Ishmael advanced, directing Olde Blue Eyes towards the incoming orruks.
The Season of War IMG_0153
The Stokers advanced into the Rose & Scythe gate.
The Season of War IMG_0154
Another mob of orruks came yelling forward, and the Stokers decided to mount a defence at the Rose & Scythe gate.
The Season of War IMG_0156
The Season of War IMG_0158
Pecker and the Deck Crew, meanwhile, found themselves slowed down by the ghostly inhabitants of Wortbad.
The Season of War IMG_0157
Seeing they would be dealt with piecemeal, Gudrun ordered Ishmael to send Olde Blue Eyes back and slow down the Rotmoons with his lighting bolts.
The Season of War IMG_0159
The Season of War IMG_0162
Yet, it was to no avail. The Rotmoons and their gargant closed in and got stuck onto Olde Blue Eyes.
The Season of War IMG_0164
Olde's chitinous limbs easily dispatched the orruks, but they did little arm to the raging gargant, buying time for the second Rotmoon mob to charge in.
The Season of War IMG_0165
Luckly, Gregorius and the Deck Crew had finally negotiated the haunted streets of Wortbad and joined Ishmael, pouring their fire into the melee.
The Season of War IMG_0160
At a single barked order by Gudrun, signalling out the gargant as a long time enemy of the duardin race, all the Grudgebreaker charged in.
The Season of War IMG_0166
But again, the gargant emerged unscathed and with a sickening crunch slammed his huge club into Olde's shell.
The Season of War IMG_0167
It was getting to a sticky end for the Grudgebreakers and Gudrun thought better to call for a tactical retreat. More drastic measures were needed to deal with that gargant.
