PostSubject: The Crowmoons - Adventures through the Mortal Realms   Thu 13 Aug 2015 - 7:24

A band of greenskins that dwell in underground lairs in Shyish, the Realm of Death, for a few months at a time. Occasionally they set out to raid the surrounding area. They ambush passing travelers and settlements and eventually take the loot back to their dungeon to sort, share out and eat. Before they get too much attention from those they have attacked and robbed, they move on to a new lair.

Dressed predominantly in filthy black or brown robes and rusty armour, the whole warband are garbed in the manner of Night Goblins; black hooded cowls decorated with yellow checks and dags are not uncommon.

They are not allied with any great army or aligned with any particular cause. They are just a ragtag band of greenskins, lurking in the out-of-the-way corners of the Mortal Realms, making trouble for the locals and trying not to get killed by something bigger than them.

~ ~ ~

City of Thorns

While on their way back to the Summergate after spending a few days exploring the sinister ruins of the long dead City of Thorns in the Flying Gardens of Ghyran, loaded down with loot so they weren’t in a great hurry, the Crowmoons were ambushed by Duradin.

“Boss, there’s some stunties in that building!” shouted Mudgard “They’ve got a ruddy great gun wiv ‘em!”

As they neared the Realmgate the silence of the morning was shattered by a Duradin cannon. The gun and its crew had been hidden in the ruins until they opened fire.

The first double-shotted volley of cannon fire echoed across the grassland - the cannon balls fell amongst the Boyz ranks and scattered those they did not kill!

Dregtoof, Spitlock and Dogear tried to get their revenge and advanced under the cover of Dogear’s Gaze of Mork blasts. The orruk heroes weathered the punishing combined fire of crossbows and cannon.

Black Orc Big Boss Spitlock slaughtered Slayers but they took him down with them in their death-throes. The cannon dropped Dogear and Gudrun, the Duradin Lord, charged out of a Mystical forest and felled Dregtoof, ending the battle.

(Godfather Viktor wrote this lovely bit of background for our games Smile )

Erghyrin, the Jewel of the Shimmerwood

Long ago, in their never ending quest for knowledge and ingredients for their craft, the alchemists of the Guilded Hand traveled across the Realmgates from Chamon. In Ghyran they found something they had long looked for. In the Shimmerwood grew the Mydaesh Root, whose juice was capable of accelerating all kind of natural transmutations.

The Guilded Hand Elderds parleyed with the Sylvaneth lords and in exchange of their promise to create and tender for a garden of unsurpassed beauty they received leave to transmute the rocks of a glade into a city. So Erghyrin, the Jewel of the Shimmerwod was founded. For centuries its hanging gardens awed travelers from all the Realms and the ...root trade flourished.

Then came Chaos and the vile contagions of Nurgle. The delicate Mydaesh Root gardens were the first to perish, the people of Erghyrin followed shortly after, ravaged by foul diseases. Through the Age of Chaos, Skaven, Beastman and human followers of Chaos ravaged the empty city, leaving nothing but overgrown ruins in their wake.

Now, as Sigmar's Storm rages across the Mortal Realms, another, far less noble war is taking place in the Shimmerwood. With the Silvaneth and Chaos servants drawn to the Greenglades by the Stormcast Eternals' offensive, plunderers of all kinds flock to the ruins of Erghyrin, eagerly looking for the fabled riches stashed by the Guilded Hand through centuries of trade.

Slow Dog

Dregtoof and the Crowmoons returned to Ghyran by the Cernunnos Gate and set up camp in an abandoned temple, in the ruins of Erghyrin. They explored the surrounding area for a few days but they got lost in the tangled Wyrmwoods. By the time they found their way out Gudrun's Pirate Duardin had caught up with them again!

The Lurkerz hurried ahead of the heroes to be the first into the fight!

Dogear got distracted and wandered off towards the temple, Dregtoof took the Underhogz to look after him but that meant they foolishly left the Lurkerz to fight without their support.

Spitlock got left behind by the Lurkerz and the Duardin Slayers pounce on him - unfortunately Spitlock’s huge double-handed Slaughter-Choppa wasn’t quite as effective as last time they met.

Meanwhile the Lurkerz got duffed-up by the combined might of Gudrun, the Battle Wizard and the Quarrellers. Mudgard narrowly escaped death when Gudrun’s pistol-shot ricocheted off his metal gauntlet.

Dregtoof and Dogear made a forlorn last stand against the Maneater and Pirate Captain in the temple. It didn’t go well for the greenskins...

By the time all the Crowmoons are either dead or driven off the Duardin are whittled down to a handful of injured but jubilant fighters.

Feed the Trees

Dregtoof was getting thoroughly fed-up with those damned Duardin Pirates. They kept getting in the way and spoiling the day whenever they turned up. He found out when they were next planning on using a Realmgate (known locally as Arduinna’s Gate) and led the Crowmoons to lie in wait for them there.

As soon as the Duardin arrived at the gate the Lurkerz piled in with Warboss Dregtoof leading from the front. Big Boss Spitlock joined they by charging out of the inspiring ruined building while the Underhogz Arrer Boyz took up firing positions inside. Dogear the Shaman provided a Mystic Shield for the Arrer Boyz from behind the rocky hill, upon which Arduinna’s Gate stood.

After a few brief minutes of fighting a handful of Slayers were dead but the Lurkerz were all killed or run-off. The Duardin Quarrellers made a Hazardous Journey through Realmgate to snipe at Dogear from behind.

Gudrun and Captain Pekker dealt with Dregtoof and Spitlock while Cargo the Ogre Maneater clashed with the Underhogz.

The Crowmoons lost again. Only Dogear and 2 Arrer Boyz were left to try to escape, swearing that they'll get the Duardin next time!

I think the pesky stunties are quite angry at the orruks for constantly getting their name wrong Razz
Perhaps if the orruks start calling them duARdin, the stunties will be more gentle on them Wink

Low Red Moon

The Crowmoons were once more raiding Ghyran for the supplies that they could not find in Shyish: They were braving the wilds of the Wyrmdark, at the far end of the Amberwind Chasm, in the hope of finding Wyrmroot for Saruthul the White Sorcerer.

Overhead the night sky was lit only by the Dimdire - a permanently eclipsed moon, the colour of blood - as Gudrun and his Duardin Pirates crossed paths with the Crowmoons again in the the Wyrmdark.

The Crowmoons advanced in an oblique line, with Dregtoof and the Lurker Boyz at the head of the right flank, followed by Spitlock and the Underhogz Arrer Boyz with Dogear the Shaman at the rear on the left flank.

Dogear the Shaman and the Arrer Boyz provided cover from the Sinister Idol of Gorkamorka as the Orcs closed on a hill that was loaded with Arcane power.

The Duardin Slayers came over the hill and smashed into the Orc Boyz while the Wizard and Shaman dueled magically and physically! Dogear wounded his opponent and the Wizard fled to fight the Arrer Boyz alongside the Pirate Captain.

The Slayers sold their lives dearly, as they wiped out the Lurker Boyz and took down Dregtoof. Dogear was left far behind the combat lines as the Underhogz were whittled down to one Arrer Boy. Spitlock and Dogear grabbed their fallen boss and beat a swift retreat.

Undone and Dusted

The tangled forest of the Wyrmdark seemed to be moving. Maybe even growing around them as they forced their way through the clawing branches and thorny vines. Whenever they paused for a brief rest they were have convinced the creaking noises of the trees also stopped - it was as if the woods were trying to sneak up on them.

Dregtoof, Dogear and Mudgard had returned to the wilds of the Wyrmdark with a band of Lurkerz Boyz while Spitlock and the Underhogz were left to guard what little Wyrmroot they had been able to steal from the struggling peasant farmers and traders.

But the Wyrmdark was not a healthy forest, the Crowmoons had taken wide detours around several clearings that were fetid and corrupt, where loathsome unnamed things squirmed in the rotting trunks of fallen trees.

So they were relieved to find themselves in a wide clearing of rolling uncorrupted grasslands. The relief was short-lived though, as their old foes the Grudgebreakers were also there!

Pirate Dwarf Captain Gudrun roared a challenge and hurried ahead of his followers. The hairy buccaneer fired his pistol at Dregtoof while Ishmael, the Grudgebreakers’ Wizard, blasted him with an Arcane Bolt. Gudrun impetuously charged alone into the Orc lines and took down Dregtoof with his rune-engraved cutlass!

The Crowmoons scattered.

A Rock and a Hard Place

After their last skirmish ended it a rout the Crowmoons had to stop Gudrun's Pirates breaking through to their camp, where their meager supply of foraged and looted Wyrmroot was stored.

The Duardin were split into three groups while the Crowmoons were concentrated in one group on the left flank - just Dogear and Spitlock held the right flank, and Spitlock was mostly there is keep an eye on Dogear and make sure he didn’t get into too much trouble! They spotted that the Duardin Quarrellers were coming their way so they lay in ambush for them in a narrow gully.

The Lurker Boyz pressed the attack but the Slayers and Warriors tried to slip past them. Dregtoof left the Boyz in Mudgard’s command and went off alone to deal with the humans who were trying to slip down the left - Ishmael the Wizard and Pirate Captain Pecker, hoping to take them out one at a time.

Dregtoof piled into the Wizard with choppas swinging wildly - he landed one or two blows but he was taken down by the Wizard's Chain Lightning magic.

The Pirate Duardin tried to rush the gap left on the right of the Lurker Boyz but the orruks spotted the attempt and closed in on them. Dogear and Spitlock prepared to hold Quarrellers in a narrow pass on the right flank.

The Lurker Boyz got a beating: They had charged into the fight but the Duardin were tough and well armoured, and more importantly, excellent fighters.

Dogear and Spitlock successfully drove-off the Quarrellers with axe and spell.

The Duardin Slayers smashed the Lurker Boyz but they had delayed the Duardin long enough to deny them victory.

Does denying victory to the dwarfs imply victory for the orcs?

Bridges Burning

Dregtoof looked around the silent valley. He had been sure that Dogear and the Underhogz Arrer Boyz knew that this Realmgate was the agreed meeting point. The Shaman’s dreams had been clear that this was where the pirate Duardin were going to try to sneak into the Carrionthorn Forest. The Orc Warboss couldn’t understand why they still hadn’t turned up and his irritation levels increased steadily as the minutes passed. The Shaman was the one who said this Realmgate needed to be broken and his magic was the best weapon to smash the ancient stones.

When the Duardin started coming through the gate he was left with no choice - he had to attack now and try to break the gate the old fashioned way: with brute force.

The Lurkerz made an absolute hash of their attack against the Warrior Priest, who was promptly reinforced by the Pirate Captain and Ogor. The Duardin Slayers attacked Clubfoot and Dregtoof and even though Dregtoof callously used Clubfoot as a shield the tide of hairy rage swept both of them away.

The Lurkerz tried to push past the pirates to get to the Realmgate, a few succeeded but none of them managed to even chip the stonework.

In no time at all there weren’t any orcs left in the valley. Even if Dogear had arrived then he would not have hung around with so many pirates in the area, and more coming through the gate.

This game was played using the "Hold or Die" Battleplan  with me as the defender, as I had 1 campaign point to Viktor's 3 points.

Viktor was allowed a force one third bigger than me (my 15 models to his 20). One third of my force started on table and Viktor only had to wipe them out to win a major victory. The rest of my force would come on turn 2, from my choice of table edge. I took first turn and used the Battleplan special Command Ability: All Out Defence (basically "Go To Ground" from 40k) on my tiny group. You can't move but get a re-roll to all your saves, you can still shoot and cast spells.

~~~
Ace of Crows
Dogear the Shaman and four Arrer Boyz of the Underhogz crouched in the Wildwood, watching the Duardin and their allies form up around them. Slayers and Gudrun the Duardin Lord to the north-east, Quarrellers to the north-west, the Warrior Priest and Pirate Captain to the south-west. They all closed in on the greenskins and started firing. One Arrer Boy went down.
A Wildwood appeared between the Quarrellers and the Orcs, a Slayer and a Quarreller were killed by the corruption of Nurgle.
The Pirate Captain charged into the Wildwood and cut down two more Arrer Boyz (the last one fled), the Shaman counter attacked and wounded the Pirate.
The Lurkerz, Warboss Dregtoof and Spitlock arrived close behind the Warrior Priest and charged. The Priest fell to the combined might of Warboss and Boyz. Spitlock charged the Pirate Captain.
Another Wildwood appeared, this time behind a rocky hill to the south-west, far from the fighting.
Dogear cast Gaze of Mork, but it was unbound. Then he used the Moonstone of the Hidden Ways (that the Orcs had found in an earlier adventure) to slip away, moving secretly from the central Wildwood to the distant hidden one!
Spitlock smashed the Pirate Captain to the ground while Dregtoof and the Lurkerz fought the Quarrellers and slaughtered the Celestial Wizard.
The generals clashed in the Wildwood and wounded each other, the Slayers finished of the Orc Warboss. Spitlock attacked the Slayers and took out several with his Slaughter Choppa.
There was very little left of the Duardin force but the Orcs had only lost the four Arrer Boyz and the Warboss! Critically the Orc's starting force had a survivor - the hidden Shaman.
~~~

(A minor) Victory was mine!!

The campaign now stands at 3 point each!

A Wing and a Prayer

Battleplan: The Trap.
The Crowmoons were the Invaders, the Grudgebreakers were the Ambushers.

The Crowmoons deployed in a defensive formation with the Orc Boyz in a ring around the Orc Heroes and Arrer Boyz. (The Ambushers got the first turn but neither side can move in the first turn)

The Lurkerz Crowmoons charged towards Ishmael the Pirate Wizard, and piled-in to fight Slayers as well. The Underhogz Arrer Boyz shot at Quarrellers.

Warboss Dregtoof fought Ishmael the Wizard but shooting and magic wore him down.

Dogear used the Moonstone of the Hidden Ways to travel to a Wildwood that had just appeared behind the Orcs. This was a mistake as Gudrun made a Hazardous Journey through the Realmgate and attacked the Shaman, taking him out of action.

The Orc Boyz killed the Slayers (who had performed the worst they have ever done in the entire campaign!) while Gudrun killed Spitlock (who had fluffed his Slaughter Choppa attacks) and the Arrer Boyz.

But with only Gudrun left to face the Crowmoons’ 4 or 5 Orcs, the Orcs had won another minor victory.

(4-3 campaign points to me!)
