If one rolls a rare 9 and wishes to purchase an ithilmar weapon, are they limited to common weapons? If not, must an additional rarity roll be spent searching for the weapon itself?

i.e. an ithilmar brazier iron costing a rare 7, a rare 9 and 105gc?

In my group we play that you only need to roll the initial rarity. Works for us, and hasn't made anything un-fun.

In our first campaign i made the ruling that you could not change what rare items are made from ie brazier iron is obviously iron not ithilmar, but in the next campaign that's starting up i am considering allowing people to make two rarity rolls consecutively to such items or simply adding the two raritys together to make one roll, (with opulent coaches, merchant guild rings, rare gems and streetwise its possible).

Our group has never bothered to search for Ithilmar or gromril weapons as far as I remember. Not something I recall doing at any rate. Seems a bit much bother for the reward. Not that we wouldn't keep the odd sword if it turned up in a treasure pile, but buying one?

The latest campaign had a slight wrinkle as one of the Undead players was seeking an advantage with Lightning Reflexes. A +1 Initiative sword kept his vampire striking first in most encounters, but did not result in a run on the local swordsmiths for more of the same from his opponents.

Searching for a rare weapon to enhance seems a bit fiddly and not something to be encouraged.

@Lord0--Skipping the second search sounds like a reasonable idea, but what is the 'initial search'? Do you search for the rarest? Just the Ithilmar or Gromril? Gaining a rare 10 weapon with a rare 9 search that's better than the rare 10 seems a bit fishy Suspect

Gromril and Ithilmar daggers are often a favorite in our group.

We just use the higher rarity value. We tried it for a bit at 9, but that felt a bit cheaty so was less fun.

As with Phantasmal fiend, our most common purchase is a gromril or ithilmar dagger, but ithimar rapiers, swordbreakers, and so forth get the occasional purchase.

Well, I've definitely never heard of rare rolling twice for rare items. We just go with the highest needed roll for such a weapon; if you wish to find an Ithilmar Horseman's Hammer, then it's still 10+ and you pay thrice the price. I would say though, that unless you house rule it / agree on some specific interpretation, you should stick with the common weapons.

I'd go with a Gromril Rapier instead, to ignore the +1 save. That's one of our most wanted weapons; no one has found it yet though Razz

I'm quite surprised no one has found it aipha with just a opulent coach and streetwise its at -5 difficulty, and if you just use the highest value the most any item will ever be is a 7 which is the most commonly rolled result on 2d6.

Yeah, if you're really willing to invest, it is quite possible. However, only two of our warbands currently possess an Opulent Coach; both warbands are Dwarves though, and a Thunderer with Weapons Training might be a potential buyer, but atm. they're looking for other things I believe. Anyway, tbh., we're not the best at rolling rarity rolls Razz and since we're not using the insanely underpriced Merchant HS, we're not as rich as the rest of you guys in here Wink

Probably because it's best to shoot down a souped-up vamp from a nice, safe distance! Ripley knew what she was talking about.

We will use Ithilmar and gromril weapons if we find them, but off hand I can't remember anyone actively looking for them.

One rarity roll would be needed but if you are planning on making it out of yet another rare weapon, then maybe add a +1 to the rare number before you roll.

I think it should be as difficult as possible to get rare weapons made of a different substance

<Merchant> "oh hi amazon warrior did you by a sun gauntlet, you know one of those mystical weapons forged by the old ones"
<Amazon> " do you have one that is made of the rare elven metal... ithilmar"
<Merchant> "I don't believe even the elven forge-masters could make such a rare and arcane weapon, ..... oh wait i have one of those right next to my stock pile of normal ones it will just cost you a bit more"

<Merchant> "we have an assortment of weapons from fallen dwarven warriors some are even made with the rare and expensive metal gromril"
<Elf Warrior> "Do you have a lance made of this rare and elusive weapon"
<Merchant> "Well you see dwarves don't ride mounts so i doubt they would make any"
<Elf Warrior>"Isn't that one over there?"
<Merchant> "right you are good sir"

<Caythan Monk> "I hear you make Gromril weapons"
<Dwarven forge master> "yerp"
<Caythan Monk> "I need you to make me a Gromril Katana"
<Dwarven forge master> grumble grumble "whats dat?"
<Caythan Monk> "Its a thin honed blade made using a high grade steel folded upon itself using ancient techniques handed down from master to apprentice"
<Dwarven forge master> " I cun make ye a sword of gromril ?!"

Wouldn't that just depend on which setting you are playing in? If its the Lustra one, chances are some of the Lustra only type weapons could be made as Gromril. Mainly because they could have a local dwarf smith in a settlement near the jungle. Same with the kanata, providing it was in the aera with kanatas are common. I wouldn't allow someone getting a gromril made kanata if we were having a standard mordheim game set in mordhiem. If it was BTB game, sure.

Also, the amzon weapons are one of a kind weapons that can't be reproduce and therefore can't be the standard gromril weapon.
