| Murderheim - Mercenary Challenge (part one) During a post-game discussion, my fellow gamers and I hit on the topic of 'which Mercenary warband is the best'. Sure Marienburgers start off with more gold, Reiklanders have BS4 Marksmen and an extended LD range for their Captain, and Middenheimers have the S4 Captains, Heroes and (IMHO) a better Skill Chart to choose from. While we agreed (and disagreed) and various points, it was really an excuse to thrown down a challenge... The ChallengeSo 'Greeneyedrabbit', 'Mister Blahblah', and myself would each paint a different human mercenary warband from the Mordheim rulebook. Once painted we would then play through ten multiplayer scenarios to determine which warband sucks the least. At the end of the campaign we will be looking to see which warband has the highest rating, and which player has won the most amount of games. Ultimately it was just going to be a laugh. Mister BlahBlah - Marienburgers (painted in Ostermark colours) Greeneyedrabbit - Reiklanders Din - Middenheimers The GuidelinesWe can only run a single warband, and there will be no restarting warbands during the campaign. Despite how dire things get, we'll need to continue on with them until the end! There will be a 33% cap on models with missile weapons (this is a house rule we always play by, but I thought that I had better mention it). Hiring models, hired swords, and purchasing equipment would follow all the normal rules. Only hired swords and equipment that is considered 'official' can be used. The Pit Fighter from the Injury Chart will accrue experience just like a Hero (ouch!). Additional Rules (from the Mordheim Rulebook and Town Cryer) that we're using: New Critical Hit Table Mounted Warriors Black Powder Weapons Random Encounters (Games 1-2: one event only, Games 3-10: as many as we roll up!) ScenariosThe following multiplayer scenarios from 'the Best of Town Cryer' will be used and follow this order: 1. Street Brawl 2. The Lost Prince 3. Treasure Hunt 4. Ambush! 5. The Wizards Mansion 6. The Pool 7. Monster Hunt 8. Street Brawl 9. Treasure Hunt 10. Ambush!

| Murderheim - Mercenary Challenge (part three) GAME ONE - STREET BRAWLEach player deploys within 6" of their table edge, no model may be deployed within 6" of an opponents model. Winner is the last player to fail a rout test. THE BATTLEEach player split their forces in two and attacked the others to their flank, while the Marienburger and Middenheimers were forced to make the journey into the middle of the table to settle their differences. The Random Event saw a cloud of flies swarm through the battle reducing everyone's vision and incurring a -1 modifier to close combat and shooting for a few turns. Fighting was thick and fierce, with neither player willing to give ground. The amount of models taken out of action quickly began to rise as the battle became more brutal (we wont be using Voluntary Routing). Eventually each player had lost their Captain (and the leadership 8 the provide), resulting in both the Reiklanders and Marienburgers failing their rout test leaving only the two uninjured Middenheimer mercenaries to claim the win. We like our Mordheim games to be pretty brutal affairs The highlight for me was everyone's Captain either getting killed or removed from the campaign for three games! - Slannman wrote:

The Mideenheimer won't come back from this blow. They lost the campaign in battle one ( although they won the battle) I think it's another example of 'Campaign Organisers Curse'. The amount of casualties and the lack of gold and experience upgrades means it's going to take quite a few games for my Middenheimers to claw their way back. | |

| Murderheim - Mercenary Challenge (part four) GAME TWO - THE LOST PRINCEEach player deploys within 6" of their table edge, no model may be deployed within 6" of an opponents model. The Lost Prince is placed in the centre of the table. Each round at the start of the first player's turn the Prince will move D6" in a random direction. The Prince can be 'rescued' by moving into base contact with him, the two models will then remain in base contact moving as one model. Winner is the player to move the Prince off their table edge, or the last player to fail a rout test. THE BATTLEIt was a mad dash to the lost prince, who decided that wandering around at random was his best course of action. The Marienburgers were first to make contact with the lost individual and then wasted no time in ushering him back to their lines. The Reiklanders waded into the Marienburger forces (sent in an attempt to hold them at bay), keen to break them and claim the reward for rescuing the prince. The Middenheimers still licking their wounds after the last encounter were happy to sit back and watch the proceedings, looking for an opportunity to strike. Unfortunately their only real contribution to the fight being unloading a blunderbuss shot into the midst of the Reiklander and Marienburg battle. All players tried to some how reach the objective, with the fighting escalated to the point where both the Marienburgers and Middenheimers failing their break test making a dash for safety, leaving the Reiklanders to claim the reward. At least this time the casualties would be minimal... | Murderheim - Mercenary Challenge (part five) GAME THREE - TREASURE HUNTEach player rolls a D3 to see how many wyrdstone pieces are placed on the table, and then take it in turns placing them. No piece may be placed within 10" of a table edge or 6" of another piece. Any Hero may pick up a piece and carry it with them at no cost, pieces may not be transferred to another model, but once the model is taken out of action all pieces they were carrying are dropped. Each player deploys within 6" of their table edge, no model may be deployed within 6" of an opponents model. Winner is the last player to fail a rout test. THE BATTLEThe Middenheimers made an attack on the Reiklander flank leading to a skirmish that battled on for several turns. Each warband sent out their forces to take any nearby wyrdstone, and then looked to their opponent/s for the rest of the hoard. The Marienburgers advanced on the Middenheimers and forced them back with their numbers. The Random Event saw a gigantic spider enter the area taking a Reiklander marksmen out of action and then wander towards the centre of the board while everyone gave it a wide berth. While casualties were minimal for the Middenheimers morale was low since the carnage of game one, so they bottled and made a break for safer grounds. | It will be hard for you to claw back with your Middenheimers. The key will be how willing you are to hang back and let the other two warbands fight each other. Based on the battle reports so far, I don't think that this strategy is to your taste. | |

This is a great idea and very well presented. Thanks! Yeah, I can't see the Middenheimers really claw their way back in time (seeing it's only a ten game campaign), but dragging everyone else down to their level might work! - Saluksic wrote:

I'm rooting for the underdog Middenheimers! Really? I absolutely loved that movie as a child. Some needs to sculpt (not me as I lack the skills) a warband out of them and make them available! Haha - yeah everyone losing their Captains is still the highlight for me. I was the first to roll up the dead result and just hung my head... until everyone else ended up in a similar position! - RationalLemming wrote:

Haha - I actually started to apply the tactic of holding back a bit, but found that when ever I would lose the minimal 25% I would just fail the next route test. I just got to roll with the punches being dished out at the moment! - Slannman wrote:

Thanks! As we all probably know, sometimes it's a little hard remembering all the details of the game. I find that the Post Game Sequence is easier to keep track of. As someone following campaigns and battle reports this is actually the part that I'm usually more interesting in, as I want to see how each warband is progressing, and where they are failing (and what is causing that), and what I can learn from others players experiences. Also the Post Game Sequence is the part where we all mock and laugh at each others bad luck I'm having fun with putting the photos together. - Saluksic wrote:

| Murderheim - Mercenary Challenge (part six) GAME FOUR - AMBUSH!One player is deploys his entire warband within 6" of the centre of the board. Each one of his heroes is carrying D3 wyrdstone pieces which are dropped once the model is taken out of action. Remaining players deploy within 6" of their table edge, no model may be deployed within 6" of an opponents model. Winner is the last player to fail a rout test, or the player to get the most wyrdstone off the table. Being the player with the highest warband rating, GreenEyedRabbit's Reiklanders was nominated to go in the middle. THE BATTLEIt was once again a mad dash for the Reiklander position in the centre. The Marienburgers led the charge eager to get to grips with Rolaf's Old Guard. The Middenheimers tried to play it safe, not too keen to commit beyond their capabilities, but still wanting to participate in the battle. So, the Heroes advanced behind a wall of throw-away grunts. The Random Encounter saw one of the Marienburger mercenaries begin to hallucinate after staring too long at a polluted pool of water, believing that he could see through the obstacles around him and detect anyone trying to hide or creep around. Fortunately no one was bothering, so no one believed his insane mutterings. Then a thick fog rolled in, reducing line of vision (down to 2D6 per turn) and limiting the missile fire, the battle would have to be decided at close range. The Reiklanders did their best to fend of the pincer like attack. Unfortunately the sheer brutality of the assault from the Marienburgers proved too much, and due to the heavy amount of injuries and casualties the Reiklanders were receiving they would eventually play no further part in the battle. For they were still missing the leadership and guidance that Rolaf would normally provide. All that was left was for the Marienburgers to deal with the handful of Middenheimers lurking around, which despite their best attempts gave little resistance and fled from the field after failing yet another rout test. The fighting was far from over for the James the Reiklander Champion though... The Reiklander Champion James awoken to find himself in one of Mordheim's notorious fighting pits about to be challenged by Cyrus the Pit Fighter. Unfortunately for James, who was still too groggy from the injury that saw him to be brought here, Cyrus took the initiative and charged in. The experienced Pit Fighter proved too skillful and brutally murdered James to the delight of the crowds. James would play no further part in the campaign. How many heroes have the Middenlanders lost now? Are you on repeats (lost two of the same hero slot?)

| Murderheim - Mercenary Challenge (part seven) ...and we're back! GAME FIVE - THE WIZARD'S MANSION!One player is deploys his entire warband within 6" of a building placed in the centre of the board. A roll is made on a chart to see the (if any) random equipment they are provided with to help them defend the wizard's mansion. Remaining players deploy within 6" of their table edge, no model may be deployed within 6" of an opponents model. Winner is the last player to fail a rout test. Being the player with the highest current warband rating, The Marienburgers were nominated to defend the mansion. THE BATTLEFrasier's Felons set up postion around the Wizard's Mansion. Their superior numbers meant that the combined Reiklander and Middenheimer forces only just outnumbered them by a few men, so they needed to work together if they were to stand a chance. Both the Legion of the Wolf and Rolaf's Old Guard (led by Rolaf himself having returned from a three game injury) advanced hesitant to make the first move. Auxillary and throw away troops were dispatched to test the Marienburger defences, while the heavy hitters got into position. To the surprise of a lone Reiklander a nearby tree came alive and attacked taking him out of action. The Marienburgers made a counter attack on the Rolaf's Old Guard, with the Reiklander Captain Rolaf and various Marienburgers engaging in a pistol shootout amongst the ensuing chaos. Due to increasing losses Frasier's Felons eventually bottled and quit the field. Whereas despite minimal losses the Middenheimers too joined them and fled for safety. Leaving the Reiklanders to claim the day and loot the Wizard's mansion.
