I'd imagine this is probably a fairly common rules question, but the rulebook hasn't turned up a clear answer.

Today my captain stunned a dwarf thunderer with a lucky bowshot. Said thunderer happened to be standing on the edge of a 2nd story floor, and fell when he failed his initiative check. The thunderer takes two wounds from falling damage, does this take him out of action?

For Close Combat the rules state that being in base contact with a stunned warrior takes it out of action in the Close Combat phase and hitting a knocked down warrior also takes it out of action.

This is not the case for shooting. It is necessary to roll to hit, roll to wound and then to roll on the injury table regardless of whether the warrior is standing, knocked down or stunned.

I would therefore treat wounds from falling, magic, random events, etc as per shooting. You should roll on the injury table for each wound sustained once the warrior reaches 0 wounds even if the warrior is already knocked down or stunned.

Relevant to the question is that our group (I play in the same group as Major Sharpe) uses a house rule where shooting acts like close combat; one merely needs to wound a knocked down opponent or hit a stunned opponent in order to take them OOA.

Hmmm. Bad house rule! Bad!  What a Face

That's got to wack the balance of the game a bit. Oh well, insert stock quote about as long as you have fun. Carry on. Tiny orc hands and now THIS!  Suspect

I would have to agree, that is a bad house rule. That would give shooty weapons too much power and also makes the game kind of boring because it would be easier to take people ooa by just shooting them, then you get warbands that all have missile weapons and they would just stand still for the whole game and shoot. With no movement, it would get boring very fast. Why need all that terrain? Just stand them upp and staart rolling the dice for the next hour. *yawn*

As for the stunned guy falling, yeah treat it like he was normally shot (without house rules). I think with the rule part where it talks about a stunned model losing it's int roll and falling might say something about the fall damage. And they used logic. The only way the fall is to be stunned and then they fall and take damage. Since the only (or at least the most common way to fall) way to fall is being stunned then logicly, the fall damage rules include being stunned.

I was not aware this was actually a house rule. I don't know that Steve does either. It might have just been an early misinterpretation of the rules that was communicated to everyone.

When you put it that way, my group has several similar "house rules"...

We used to play the same way in my gaming group and didn't know that it was wrong for many years.

It is a common mistake - we certainly made it when first playing.

The bonuses you have against a knocked down or stunned model require you to be in base-to-base contact, so pretty much by definition it would not apply to falling damage. The model takes the falling damage when they hit the ground (so it is really "stopped falling damage"), at which point they are no longer in base-to-base contact to the fellow what hit him.

We have a related house rule (or interpretation): if a hero wounds a model, and that model falls as a consequence of the wound and the fall takes the model out of action, we give the attacker who caused the wound the experience point for taking a model OOA.

We do the same; you don't know if he died before he fell! (Unless he screams, but having a small figure scream into his death would be kinda creepy)

In my group we also give xp if the person you shot goes OOA from falling. After all, you are learning that shooting them next to a ledge increases the chance of a kill, at the very least Razz. Also, we just found it more satisfying that way.
