City of the Damned Empty
PostSubject: City of the Damned   City of the Damned Icon_minitimeThu 3 Apr 2014 - 20:52

Hi folks! I'm eagerly awaiting an order of Skaven to be delivered so I can get started on my very first warband, so in the meanwhile I decided to grab a piece of styrofoam and some other odds and ends and see what I could come up with. Here's the results:

City of the Damned 20140402-021708
Tore up a piece of styrofoam to make it look like some ruins, a destroyed platform for a statue or something, and base coated it black.

City of the Damned 20140402-022217
Dry brushed it grey twice over and cut and painted some popsicle sticks for stairs.

City of the Damned 20140402-022429
It all felt a bit dark so I gave it some lighter highlights.

And that's where I've left it for now. I feel like I could put something on the flat platform at the top but I haven't decided what that should be yet. In hindsight, I wished I had slapped some glue in various corners and sprinkled in some grit to make it look a little less clean. I may still try to work that in without gumming up the paint job.

That is a very solid foundation for your own city of the damned. As you noticed yourself, it still looks a little "clean". The mentioned grit can help you out there, as well as some washes here and there as well as static grass/leafes etc.
You could also take a look at what others show here to get some inspiration.

What paints did you use for painting the styrofoam?

I used some cheap-o craft store acrylics. Black and shades of grey.

Maybe a muted brown wash would make it look a little more worn and dirty? I think I'll try that next.

That is a FINE start to your gaming board. The stairs look particularly nice. Keep up the GOOD WORK...you'll have the whole city in no time!   thumbsup
