Compitition Idea

up to Tom whether any forum rank is given for it but regardless...

Who would be up for some sort of warband creation compition? what I mean is anyone who wants to get in on it paints/models/ect a warband starting on a date (unknown date) and have a time period to finish the warband, then post pics and have a vote for the top 3 warbands.

I thought that I might not be the only one out there who needs some encouragment/reason to paint up a new warband to a good looking standard.

what do you guys think?

I think that's a sweet idea. I'm inclined to see how the Golden Tom evolves, as I'm sure this could very easily become a category eventually. I won't be able to compete for a couple months at least, but I do need to paint 12 more skaven before the end of the year *crosses fingers*

I like this idea as well, however, we should indeed wait until the Golden Tom #1 is over (i.e. October) and start after that date, as I imagine a lot of people being busy with their competition entry.
But afterwards, I'll definitely join in!

im looking at starting after the golden tom as I need the time to purchase alot of extreamly rare and expensive old school cit mini's that most of you will never see in quantity again =).

My wallet hates me =(

Providing it doesn't prove TOO taxing on our Fearless Leader, Admin. Tom, periodic competitions with a specific theme, like the Warband thingy, could be fun AND a tremendous motivator for all the more competitive types & painting sluggards. There are quite a number of possible catagories that could be explored: best henchman group, Warband leader, Champion, Hired Sword, Spell Slinger, etc..

Whatever the catagory, it would give us a chance to show off our handicraft, motivate & inspire us to GREATER HEIGHTS of creativity [ lunacy] AND sate our cravings for MORE, MORE, MORE PHOTOS!

Actually we have already had a discussion about cathegories for GoldenTom#1 but then I decided to start easy with only one cathegory (single mini) because it was hard to fathom the participation rate.

With "only" one miniature to paint, I reckoned, more people would take on the challenge, as it requires less time, effort and money than a whole warband.

Making GoldenToms a regular thing was (and is!) also planned!
In fact there will be slightly different cathegories every time. Here are some of the ideas raised a while ago (or that I have been thinking of):

- Gory single miniature. Should I put some red on that axe? Well, this time you HAVE TO!
- Mordheim Monster/Big creature
- Small scenery Competition
- Ruined Building Competition
- Best Avatar award (this is about your PC graphics skills!)
...

But first let's see how GT#1 turns out and then we'll have more!

Conversion Competition
Scenery
Single mini
Monster/large mini
Cavalry Model
Best background/short story/battle report
Diorama

having short story/battle report style thing means you can win even without having teh painting skillz, same with scenery.

What are you thinking the time frame will be Tom? 2 months between them?

@ mrbretonnia: about the timeframe, I really cannot say yet. Everything will depend on you guys and how motivated you are. What I can say is that it will probably be more then 2 months between each comp. Creativity needs time and you should not lack it!

Actually the reason why I love this forum so much is because it's about the hobby. It's about collecting, painting and playing. I have a very firm philosophy about when, why and how rules should be designed and just writing something for the sake of itself isn't part of that. It may sound strange coming from me, but if you understand the point, it may be not.

If you want to join rules designing competitions have a look at the regular Devil's Den contests at the Specialist Games forum.

Cianty if you commented in regards to my suggestion of including background story/battle report ect, I think thats as much as the hobby as anything else and not everyone is a painter, some are just fluff bunnies.

Actually, I totally agree. They have some really fun competitions. It's not really my style, so I haven't done any. But if you're looking for helping to come up with great rules, that's a great place to do it.

New warband ideas are always nice but "balance" is the key. I have seen many a fan created warbands that are off key.

Again, I think it is a good idea as long as the creators are welcome to feedback.

This one Mordheim player just forwarded me this warband he is working on and it is pretty solid so far. I hope to share with you after I get a chance to play test. Again, this is not my warband but this guy did a really good job so far.
