Hi,

after days of discussion and reading, I'm finally pretty sure how to start my beastmen warband. I also bought models, and going start building them this week.

Now there will be an even more difficult phase:

How the hell to get appropriate names for the warband and all his members?

Sounds pretty insignificant, but really matters to me. There really have to be good names, a good fluff. It belongs to the game, like anything else.

So: How do you name your warbands? Where did you get inspriation without copying anything?

Best regards,
Seikilos

P.s.: I didn't know where to post this, I hope it's okay in "Fluff"?

This is most definitely a matter of fluff...SO you're in the right spot.   thumbsup
The largest War Band I've created thus far is a group of Night Goblins & Ubergoblins (counts as Orcs). I had them occupying a deserted Monastery; since the all wore red hoods, I call them The Red Brotherhood.
For names: Gav Thorpe wrote that he thought of Beastmen as ancient Germans & Orc as Scots; ergo, Goblins must be Irish. All my Goblins have Irish sounding names like Wastrel McWhack & Temerity O'Leery. Here's a photo of the crew to give you an idea:

Spoiler:

Note: my friend Edwin did the photography; he has a different way of spelling Goblin.  clown

Thanks for your answer!

I already made a general list, using names and places mostly with two syllables, maximum three and using mostly guttural sounds. I browsed all my old fantasy books containing maps, places and characters at the end for a bunch of Ideas....

Glad to be of (hopefully) help.   What a Face
One thing as far as names go that I used to do when I was role playing was to keep a pad with me & jot down names as they popped into my mind or I found words that could be used as names. I've just started to do this again for characters I'm creating.
Enjoy the fluff work!

For me, I get inspired for names by reading history and watching shows about history. Since the human war bands I use are close to historial groups anyway. Realistic names sound better. Fantasy names like "Strider", just sound cheesy. What Ido is iI have a memo on my smart phone where I have a list of names that find while reading and such. Makes it much easier to name my guys. One trick I do is mix and match names. I see two names I like and I use one as the first name and the other as the family name. That also gives the hero more "fluff".

I've made extensive use of name generators, like Seventh Sanctum, over the years. I will often go through several pages of generated ideas picking some of my favourites as a "short list" to select from later.
http://www.seventhsanctum.com/

For my Orc Pirates I have used the Goblin first name generator (http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=goblinnamer) paired with a glossary of nautical terms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_nautical_terms) to come up with suitably salty epithets.

For my Orcy ship names (and therefore the Mordheim warbands that are their crews) I have used the clan names part of the Goblin namer.

I also read a lot of books on the occult and the paranormal. I get a lot of ideas from those. I read a couple of books on witches and witch hunts. Tons of ideas for witch hunters.
