PostSubject: Deep Ones   Fri 6 Sep 2013 - 4:53

So, I'm almost running out of pirate figs, Porto Pulpo is nearing completion except for a ship, a ship/house and an actual board, and some details and... oh well, you know what I mean... and I'm in need of something new to occupy myself.

So the logical next step presented itself.
With all those pirates, and a nice harbour town for them to run amok in, I need some baddies, some nasties to occupy them.
So why not make an assortment of creatures of the deep?

It all started with mermaid (with octopus tentacles in stead of a fishtail) I painted up for my clubs' recurring painting compo (will post piccies once the compy is over).
I was only going to make her, honest, but then inspiration struck...

So I've been on the lookout for more figs I can re-use as deep ones (of all sorts)

And I stumbled upon this freebie in our club, he's from the game Monsterpocalypse (he was a translucent pink by the way, can't imagine why they'd do such a detailed fig and then not paint it)
and the plastic is seriously bendy. I decided to try and paint him anyway, and this is how he came out :

Somewhere in a near future : Tyranid Spore Mines which 'll get converted intyo/painted up like Jellyfish/Medusa's
6 Epic Tyranid tanks which look a lot like shellfish (kind of twisted crabs/lobsters)

From there on it'll be whatever crosses my path on the interwebs/fig fairs/obscure dusty figurine shops

The Big Creepy Guy has a very strange, alien, Cthuhlu look to him. He painted up WONDERFULLY! VERY WELL DONE!  thumbsup

Would the Mermaid be the Little Babe from the Confrontation Water Elemental pack? If so, she is another UBERCOOL mini.  clown

They used to play Monpoc the same night we did Mordheim back in the day. I was eyeing a couple of the monsters when the store was supporting the game and then one day it was all gone because the game died.

Anyway nice job! I look forward to the rest of your acquisitions for bad guys.

Mngwl-phtagh phnglui R'lyeh hraggh!

I realised I didn't show you guys how big this beastie actually is...

Deafnala, I totally missed your question!
She's the Siren of the Deep from the DeepWars game.

But I'll be looking out for those water elementals now as I completely fail to remeber those, let alone what they looked like!

I LOVE the comparison photo...the Lads(?) look GREAT together.  thumbsup

I grabbed my old (2004) Rackham Catalog; this is the mini I was talking/asking about:

This is the pack she comes in; FAEA 01, Familiars of Water:

I hope that is of some help.  What a Face

That explains why Google didn't deliver...

I was searching for Elementals, not familiars Wink

They look okay, but I was going for something darker, more menacing, and if I can help it (I know I'm making life difficult for myself) without any weaponry (ecxept perhaps a trident).
I really want them to be denizens of the deep, coming out of their hiding holes.

But still, in the meantime I'm checking Ebay, just in case LOL

And I've just finished another gribbly which has just crawled out of the deep blue.

This one comes from Privateer Press, in their Hordes range from a race called the Minions :

And to see the size :

That is one COOL mini...unnatural & gross, but cool nonetheless. GREAT color choices & brushwork! thumbsup

The Minions may very well have surpassed the Mercenaries as my favorite P.P. minis. clown

PostSubject: Re: Deep Ones   Thu 19 Dec 2013 - 0:44

Slowly getting back into my painting-groove after waay too much time without acrylic-fingerstains, pva-stains on my clothes and xacto-cutting wounds...

I found this 'little' gem on cryptlock.de (for those who like female slave-figs, check 'm out!) :

Next to a 28mm pirate-wench so you can have an idea of the size

In the new Freebooters' Fate expansion there's a scenario with zombie-squid. The purrfect opportunity to get ideas for including my deep ones into piratey games of all sorts...
On top of that, Freebooter miniatures released a set of squids... Nice! So I bought those too and painted them up (maybe a tad wee bitty too bright).

And a size-comparison with the same wench :

And here you can see the entire aquatic invasion up until now :

Seeing the piccie above I realised/decided that the cthulhu-beastie needs a rebasing on a round base.

Hope you guys like what you see!

That looks to be a Portugese Man of War. The paint job on the Big Guy & his smaller Chums are BEAUTIFUL with some very striking color choices. The Group Portrait is WONDERFUL. VERY WELL DONE all around!   thumbsup

It reminds me that I haven't seen anything about the Deep Wars game over on L.A.F. in awhile. That was starting to become popular, & the use of aquarium scenery made it a visually interesting game.   clown

And I've just finished the shortest critter so far.

This lil' fella came with the megablocks ship.
Quite bland and not too many details to pick out.
Still, I'm quite happy how he turned out Wink

Sad? Of course he's sad! He's the only hard-shell amongst a load of jellies  Laughing

Maybe, due to his size, I'll need to make up something special for his rules (like he can't really wound a fig, but you get a movement reduction, or he makes you jump in pain (possibly moving you out of cover and into a LoS, or out of a window even, something like that)

Well then, 5 months later, I’ve finally recuperated her…
Bear in mind, the contest for which I painted her up had as a rule : “muted colours : use four colours or less”
So I took Chaos Black, Skull White, Liche Purple and Blood Red, and this is the result :

Already assembled and primed the next gribbly, a murene (I think the english word is Morey Eal) and next week I'll be getting some Epic Armageddon Nid tanks to 'count as' crustaceans

The Mermaid turned out SPLENDIDLY despite the limited palette; the colors you chose, however, work very well with the subject the fuchsia/red violet look TERRIFIC. She looks more in the order of a Night Mermaid with all those tentacles. GREAT WORK!   thumbsup

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the Moray Eel...nasty critters.   Shocked

Indeed, her appearance made me choose for the dark, ominous colours, which contrast very nicely with her pale skin. It was an interesting style-exercise which posed me quite the number of little problems whilst painting her up, especially since the 4-colour rule was for the whole fig, base included

As she's quite the imposing fig, I opted for a dark, menacing colour-scheme :
