PostSubject: Finished Terrain   terrain - Finished Terrain Icon_minitimeSat 24 Aug 2013 - 21:21

Given the good feedback I received from  The Badger's Den, I thought I would show some more of my finished work.  I'll be adding to this slowly as I am able to find time to upload them to flickr.

First up: The Old Mill

Another competition entry that turned out well.  I learned a lot building this one for sure.  The river in the background/foreground is a different project I built a few years back.  When I have time, I'll post some closeups of that piece as well. Again, here is the write up for the entry:

An old windmill sits forsaken, given up, and wasting away. Who knows what stories it has to tell?

The mill is made of a polystyrene core of concentric circles stacked to give it body. The body was then wrapped in two layers of stripped foamcore. The foamcore was textured with a pen to make the bricks, which were then carved out in places to give the illusion of crumbling masonry. The stone was then drybrushed and washed various colors. Finally, a layer of wet spakle was rubbed on as mortar. The excess spakle was rubbed away from the bricks, leaving itself behind in between the stones.

The wood walkway was made of balsa. I carefully textured each beam and floorboard to give the illusion of rot. It was then painted various layers of gray, and a final coat of white in places to give the impression that it was once painted white.

The roof is made of a balsa frame, covered in cereal card for the slate shingles. I tried to leave gaps in the roof to show that it has collapsed along with the walls.

The blades are made of balsa and the axle is a stick from my front yard. You can't see it in most pictures, but the gear mechanism is there inside. It can be seen if you get your nose right up to the roof.

The windows and doors are balsa; and the debris around the bottom is cork, and balsa.

The base is MDF and is 20 cm in diameter. The tower is 35 cm to the peak in the roof. The figures are 28mm.

A couple of extra shots of the roof that didn't make the competition entry.

Delightful! Its so real you can hear the creaking of ancient timbers. The river is no slouch either. I'm going to enjoy following your threads.

Wonderful!!!!!! Lovely work on the stones and everything else.

May I ask, what did you use for the moss on the rooftop? It looks very real.

I'm sorry it took so long to post more, I've been working like crazy to get ready for the start of school, a new grade, and a new group of kids.  I've also been working on creating a website for my work, so keep an eye out for that.

Here is a small project I completed a while back.  Confrontation has a mission where you try and destroy a series of relics/sacred objects.  Since I was tired of attacking dice bricks, or other minis, I hammered out some quick standing stones so we could attack them.  With this one, I tried to work hard on creating realistic lichen, which cam e out pretty well I think.

Hey Zab,
Good to see another post. I just got back from the Cities. All my great-nieces and great-nephews were moaning about getting back to school on the 3rd. I told them to suck it up, the poor Hoosiers had been in school for 2 or 3 weeks already.

Excellent work on the stones, especially the lichen. thumbsup

Heh, thanks.  SO far it has been a pretty smooth transition back to school, though the hot 95 degree temps didn't help (in an un-airconditioned school).

Here are two more projects:

First the river that I used in the pictures of the windmill:

This piece I finished back in April.  I based it on the tower Merlin lived in in the movie "The Sword in the Stone."  I wanted a more secluded feel, so I went with a different basing.

Thanks a lot for creating the moss tutorial. Very sharp and professional. I'm definitely going to try your suggestions in the future.

They closed a couple schools here in the last few weeks. This year we got the hottest days of the year in Sept. Still the river should freeze soon and you won't have to worry about how hot it is.  Razz

I... I thought that was an actual river and you did some trick with the perspective when you showed the picture of the windmill...
You really put an unbelievable amount of realism into your works!

This is absolutely striking material, amazing. I honestly thought the first picture in the windmill section was a reference pic to a real windmill. Only on my second run through did I catch it wasn't.
