Greetings!

Some time ago I bought the fantastic Terraclips modular terrain set "Vaults of Ruin". The cardboard terrain, when set up, looks fantastic and has nice grim and gothic atmosphere to it. And for a person like me who has an apartment of 24 square meters, it's essential to be able to fold the whole thing up when not needed. However, as superb as the ruins are, a keen-eyed mordheim enthusiast will find them a little too generic to represent the City of Damned we know and love.

This brings me to question: how to make the overall look of generic tabletop consisting of ruins more "mordheim-ish"? Ideally this should be achieveable by adding certain details into terrain. These details could range from 25mm based object (say, a signpost) to a roughly 5" diameter small terrain piece (for example a round warpstone pit with shovels, boxes and other junk used when prospecting). Leafing through the rulebook has given me some inspiration, but what would You suggest to bring mordheim truly alive on tabletop?

Let's share some ideas! Wink

I am unfamiliar with the terrain you have. Do you have any images of it?

Ah, yes. The Vaults of Ruin set is one of the three dungeon/ruin themed modular cardboard terrain sets from series Dungeonrise, which is part of Terraclips product family by Wyrd Miniatures. In short, it lets you build ruins and dungeons out of cardboard components, which are linked into each other by plastic 'clips.'

Here's a pic of contents. by googling 'terraclips vaults of ruin' you can find what it looks like when set up. Sorry - I'm right now unable to post pics of my own set of ruins. However I humbly recommend to take a look at Terraclips - they make for really good-looking gaming terrain with great storability and affordable price.

What a great idea for a thread - it doesn't matter what terrain you use if you think of these sort of details!thumbsup

I'm a big fan of small pieces of "street clutter" on round bases - I use 40mm and 60mm usually.

I also love small stand-alone terrain pieces

And objective markers littered with Wyrdstone, playing cards, fish, broken gear, etc:

This really made me want to build a similar sewer-esque water terrain piece! Very inspiring!

I think bits from this company strewn about would work great. I think the sac o corpses is pretty cool.

WarbossKurgan, those pictures are heaven!! Even though I'm not a big fan of using GW bases as markers (just because they're too high), I can appreciate the work and detail on them. Fantastic and really useful to add  character to your terrain!

But yeah, clutter and loads of detail are definitely a plus. With terrain building, you're basically telling a story of that place. It needs as much detail as possible so that you make it more realistic and believable.
That process can also make you come up with background ideas for the places you're building. You might be making an abandoned stone structure that was once a church or temple and is now used by pirates as a secret hideout for smuggling (something I'm actually currently working on) and so on.

My brother and I recently purchased some other sets by Terra-Clips: specifically the Streets of Malifaux and Buildings of Malifaux boxes.

Streets set:

Buildings set:

Both sets combined Cool

I have yet to get a game in with them, but I also love the fact that they store perfectly flat, because my space is also limited when it comes to storage. Like yourself I'm interested in finding ways of making or buying additional details to fill out the sets, so that buildings have things like tavern tables, barrells and extra depth to them- to make it feel like people did once live there once.

I went so far as to read up on casting your own small pieces in resin and plaster, but I'm not sure I'm quite there yet... we'll see.
