... by which I mean what set of rules for a warband of elves do you think is most widely accepted as balanced, and acceptable for play?

Clearly not the Shadow Warriors warband...

The Shadow Warriors warband Cool
Not because it is that balanced, but because it is the one that is most commonly played and accepted in the way that they are tolerated with a tweak or two. I had a few games with Shadow Warriors and one or two agains Wood Elfes and Dark Elfes each, but I don't recall reading any gaming reports with WE or DE ever! So I wouldn't call them widely accepted because they are not widely played.
But to answer your question a little more closely: I believe that a tough warband is hardly ever about the list but most of the time about the player's skill and/or beardyness.

Grimscull is right on all accounts.
I have my self played against the WE warband that is found on the Mordheimer website and didn't find it as strong as the Shadow Warriors but is still strong.

With what Grimscull says about the player vs. the list is true most times and is why I don't mind my son playing Shadow Elves (for now) but I also find the game my self to be the most fun when things are balanced to begin with and that is the list. Why? well people will learn to play better and not only play one list. If some one isn't that good of a player but are using a good list they will balance out to be competitive (good thing) but when they move to try other warbands they are already in the rut of playing not up to par and get stomped even if playing a good warband.
IMHO it is better to balance the warband in this case to start and if needing to help some one learn the game then bring your C game and gradually (but not too slow) improve your game so they can learn with out losing interest.

ok I got off track there sorry.

There are a few threads on here that talk about balancing the elves out.
the most common are 4 heroes max until LGT like Dwarves and other such warbands.
Drop sniper skill
Drop Strength skill option
Toughness 3 max (this seams to be the most controversial of the rule changes)

You spend no time in the Battle Reports and Fluff section of this forum. (Although you are right no one writes about WE.)

I think the answer Shadow Elves is probably correct. Over the last 12 years I think the number of Shadow Elves to Dark Elves is about even in our group. WE only showed up once and after a couple of horrible games the player graciously retired them.

Lately it has been a competition between StyrofoamKing's Sea Patrol Elves and Dark Elves because we play a more Sartosan themed campaign.

My brother used to play the dark elves and as far as I remember there were no problems with that. Yeah they could be hard but so are skaven (my youngest brother) and norse (me). To be honest tough we allowed everything so the games could be rather odd at the end and we played so long that we maxed out experience on everyone.

We have used the Dark Elves in our campaigns and they were pretty much fine. Shadow Elves have not been accepted since their first appearance in a campaign and at the end of it they were flat out banned and not even the person using them complained.

My wife has been using these High Elves and they don't seem too bad. That being said she is not *quite* as competitive as the rest of us, but she is hard enough that none of us feel the need to pull our punches in game. They seem balanced enough that we will likely be playing a few campaigns with them before tweaking them.

Never-the-less I would be interested in seeing what happens to the Elves-as-mercenaries project.

We use the Druchii warband in our campaigns: http://mordheimer.com/warbands/experimental/druchii.htm. Seems fairly balanced imo., and varies a lot in wins/losses.
We also use the Wood Elves warband, which seems powerful, but is annihilated in close combat. They usually lose 0 casulties in multiplayer though, but that's not hard to guess why.

Lord 0, that warband seems fairly fun, although the Rangers shouldn't have that -1/+1 imo. for that cheap price. That's worth a lot. The extra skills are a bit too much, but nothing I would bother discussing. The Seaguards are 1 initiative too high and 5gc too cheap if you ask me. There's too little price difference between them and the Cadets, who has two important stats less, for a mere saving of 5gc. Anyway, that's just my input, use it if you want Razz

We use the house-rule that elves' racial maximum T is 3, so they tend to have a higher turn-over of heroes than other warbands. The +1/-1 of the rangers helps with their income when they are a hero down, which they almost always are, but is not as potent as the flat '+1 treasure' that the dwarfs get.

I think you may have overlooked that the Seaguard start with 5 xp so the Cadets will get more levelups faster, don't cost extra after game start, and aren't limited by how much xp is available.

Yeah, that helps a bit Smile I'm considering suggesting that for my group as well.
Aye, I did overlook that! I don't see many warbands with starting XP for henchmen Razz it'll balance out when they get LGT, and makes the price fair, so yeah, that matters Wink

The thing I like about the warband is that it *plays* like an elf warband. They are fast and shooty, but if you can get to grips with them they go down hard because of their T3 and very little access to resilient. Their two Swordmaster tanks can get resilient, but that only brings them to T4 (more or less) so they pretty much *rely* on the 4+ step aside and dodge to keep alive. Especially since they have no access to the heavy armours that the other warbands have access to.

Granted, they could TLGT and pick Strength as one of the tables they have access to, but if they try to make a melee hero they can only pick two of Strength, Speed, and Combat so they can't cherry-pick the best melee skills. They only have a choice between a sub-optimal melee hero or, if they go shooty, reinforcing the warband weakness of shooty, but little resistance to melee.

Elves are pretty fair when they have Toughness 2. This may have been a long time oversight by GW!
