PostSubject: Terraclips   Terraclips Icon_minitimeTue 26 Jun 2012 - 12:40

Okay...
... For a while now we (Selena and I) have planned our gaming table. We've considered a lot of different approaches, and for a long time we were set on making a 12 1"x1" tile based board. But as fun and great it would be to build such a table, we now face the fact that we live in a very small house.
So we started to look for other ideas. And i think we found something good here.

So my question is this: Does anyone have experience with terraclips? Are they any good for Mordheim?

I had a look at this topic and looked around the web for a while and I've come up with the following:

Cons:

1' squares that makes figuring distances way to easy (Quite a bad thing for me, as I am much better a measuring inches then the rest of the group Wink )

The Malifaux buildings aren't really ruins.

We will miss the fun of building our own table.

Pros:

Storage (!!!) we can actually live in our home and have a gaming table.

Modules, a new city for every game.

Expansions. Other game companies are looking into Terraclips, and among them Dungeon Rise, who will have a ruins set.

And finally, the 1' squares aren't that much of an issue, as people would quickly learn the distances on a 12 1"x1" tile based board or a static board.

For those unfamiliar with Terraclips, here's a few pics:

Terraclips Tcstb_1_1024
The Wyrd/Malifaux sets.

Terraclips WYRTC105-2

One of the upcoming Dungeon Rise sets.

Please let me know what you think Smile

Our LGS has some of these, and has one assembled for display use. They all look pretty cool, and having terrain that's really easy to assemble and store is a great feature.

I have the Buildings-set and like it a lot. You also get lots of markers you can use for wyrdstone, treasures etc.
One of your cons isn't really one, since noone forces sou to build complete buildings. I built ruins out of my set. On the other hand, if your really play a lot, the storage-advantage is only a half one, since putting the tiles together takes some time so you wouldn't want to assemble and take apart the buildings every game but keep them together and store them away.

@ Spectra: Thanks dude! Helps tip the scales Wink

@ Grim: Yea I've read a few articles mentioning the long set-up. However we usually play for at least a whole weekend, then have some days without the gaming. Oh, and thanks for the feedback Smile

@ On Mars: Yea, that's my idea Wink except ill lean heavy on the Street packs over the two other sets, and look forward to the ruins set Wink

I like the way they look, but I'm not sure playing with 2D images as opposed to 3D objects - but then again, I haven't seen these in person, so maybe I'm wrong.

The best plan you guys can have is really to get a bigger house. Preferably with a dedicated room for wargaming. Smile

I know, I'm only dreaming; I'm quite lucky if I'm allowed to have a board in the house! Smile

Ahhh, i just found terraclips in the net and i wanted to start a thread.

What i have seen is awesome. I have a nice scenery but what i do not have is a sewer system, and they have one, which looks AWESOME!

I ordered it straight away and now i am waiting that i receive the package.

I write a report when the sewer set arrives.

Build a gaming shed Smile.

We have the streets, and idealy you want to leave modules stuck together when you packup, otherwise it takes hours to setup and take down and you run the risk of bending or damaging the card, or even the clips.

I know that this is old but can still of some use. I bought the first three boxes of Terraclips (streets, sewers and buildings). I am very happy with them also because they were a perfect reason to restart playing with my friends and to give fresh new opportunities to our games.
In short I can affirm:

Pros:
- You can really play in cities and not in a void space with some building-resembling obstacles here and there.
- Opportunity to play at different heighs by joining second and third floors, building elevated streets and basically really using the third dimension
- Possiblity to change, built and rebuilt every piece, or to build a few ruin pieces that you like and using them in several games
- visually cool pieces
- the contents in the boxes are completely interchangeable (also esthetically)

Cons:
- Building the pieces requires quite a lot (consider at least 1 hour with two players to build a scenario)
- The clips are not included with the card boxes!
- The contents of one box are not enough to cover a regular Mordheim table (I have 3 card boxes and 2 clip boxes and they are more than enough)

In conclusion, if you have some money and want to renew your games and to experience more 3D strategies, you definitely have to buy it. If you are completely satisfied with your terrain or don't want to spend so much then this is not for you.

A quick question, when you say that you have 3 card boxes, which card boxes do you have? I have been wanting to get some of these, but was hesitant to do this due to cost and the set up time. I could work with the time though.

Thanks

I have streets of Malifaux, sewers of Malifaux and buildings of Malifaux. You can work with the time if you built some pieces of ruins that you can re-use in many battles. For the cost well, you can start with one box and see if you like it.

I made enough ruins for one table out of the Buildings-set and I store the ruins in one big bag. So I can take them out whenever I want and it doesn't damage them. Of course they aren't that easy to store but...

I ordered the Vaults of ruin set (and the clips) a moment ago from my local retailer who ran a sale campaign for all the dungeon-terraclips sets. I'm very interested to see how the set works. I've never liked making terrain that much so I believe that for a lazy person like me, this box is an ideal choice.

Somewhat off-topic: Conscidering that a single boxed set of terraclips isn't enough for a 4'x4' table, has anyone ever actually tried playing mordheim with a 3'x3' board? Is it really so necessary for a skirmish game to have a board that's over a meter wide, especially when even some army-scale games use a board of this size? Just thinkin'.

You can play some version of the game in any space. We play in a store with 2x2, 3x3 and larger tables. If you use the scenarios, having less area than intended can unbalance things pretty quickly for some scenarios. Having less table area can also change the balance between warbands, if one warband intends to shoot and one is melee oriented, having less table to cross will favor the melee guys. But you can alway tweak things to adapt to less space.

Hehheh, well you're absolutely right Very Happy buuut to be honest the little guy didn't really take THAT much time to make, at least when compared to a small ruined city! And perhaps it's also about personal preferences.

I agree. However if the board has lots of terrain, the crossbows won't be zipping enemies from across the table.. And melee fighters would have their chances to get close. So perhaps I'll give 3'x3' table a try someday. Another solution for 'pocket-sized' mordheim (if there's not enough room for a regular board) would be to use different units for measuring. Substituting inches for, let's say, 20mm or 17mm units could be an option. I must test these out when I have some spare time Smile

Anyone know how many basic buildings you can make with the buildings set? I am thinking of getting one or two and was just wondering.

I was considering getting one set and then using some of that set to measure out and attempt to create a second set with foam core.

Mainly because two sets and two boxes of clips will run me $100 bucks.

The terrain used in this post was all made off one Terraclips building-set. I know it is in German, but the first two pics should say it all. I used the set to make ruins, but I figure you could make 4-5 "complete" houses with one set.

Wow! that helps a lot more than just a number. That is quite a bit terrain.

Thanks for posting. I believe that one box could be enough (along with the terrain we already have).

I took the plunge and order 2 sets of buildings and clips. I figured if I didn't go ahead, I may not order two.

I will take pictures when I get them to give an idea of what we can make with two sets.

Honestlyi was rwally disappointed with Terraclips. I needed some hours to build the sewer system and was somehow dissapponted. It is so fiddly and unstable and for my personal taste the scenery did not feel right, soi sold it two days later on ebay. It is a kind of 3 D scenery, like a printed paper miniature on a base, if you know what i mean. It can be a great experience if you like "the not real" 3D effect.

But if you love scenery with rubble, small details, stable walls like me there s. a risk you don't like it.

I will let you know what I think of it once I get it. I like the idea of it not taking up a lot of space during 'down' time. The wife raises hell about the space I take up when I start making terrain.

I'm about to move into my first own apartment in... september. So, as I know that I'll have 24 square meters of living space, I think i come to appreciate the easy disassembly of terraclips Razz If anyone is interested, I could post some pics of the Vault of Ruin set. I couldn't find much from web, at least.
