The title sums it up quite effectively: I'm terrible at painting wood, and looking for a realistic-looking way to paint wooden weapons, both textured (like on cannon frames and chariots) and untextured (bows and spear/halberd shafts).
Does anyone have an easy to paint but good-looking colour scheme for that?

Providing an example of your attepts at painting wood might help others help you. Its hard to offer advice without a reference.

I'm currently painting a chapel kit, as well as several barrels and strongboxes.
I'm mainly looking for a colour scheme to apply to all wood though, because nearly every model I paint has some wood on them.
