HI all,

1st time poster in a bit of dilema

I recently got back into mordheim after about an 8 year break. Was looking forward to it and really enjoyed the games but my luck was abysmal!

I started a Reikland mercenary band; Captain, 2 Champs, 2 Youngbloods, 2 Swordsmens and 3 Marksmens. Faced off against a new skaven warband, with lots of slings!

He beat me soundly in game 1, but it could have gone the other way - think I wounded about a dozen times but never rolled 5/6, only finished 2 of his guys via stun - auto OoA. (worst of all was double charged a gutter runner with champ+youngblood who fluffed it and both got OoA!)

Second game we played breakthough - me attacking. He lost 5 guys but passed 3 rout tests. I had two guys within 8" of the board edge when I failed my 1st rout! AHHH. Worst of all was double charged a gutter running with champ+youngblood who fluffed it and both got OaA! - AGAIN!)

The majority of his injury roles ended up okay or positive (he even rolled multiple injuries, but then D6 1 .... full recovery!). Mine were shocking, I now have ....

captain with battle wound ... doesn't fight on D6 1
champion missing 3 games
2nd champion with -toughness
youngblood with -1 initiative

My henchmen are looking a little better, now have 3 swordsmen (with +1 Ld), 2 marksmen with bows (+1 BS) and 1 marksmen with handgun (+1A)

But he stacked up an impressive collection of experience, three characters with extra toughness or wounds, two with extra attacks and skills to choose

Seriously considering ditching my guys and starting again, spending less money on light armour which is pretty worthless, maybe no handgun (which looks cool but not effective) and improving weapon choices

rant over... what do you think!? It's not very sporting to bail on warband, but my previous experience are hero's skills/advances are the cool bit and mine are looking decidedly sub-par!

Welcome to the forum! Two player campaigns tend to be pretty unforgiving. I would suggest you BOTH start an additional warband, preferably not carbon copies of the warbands you have already tried out. This works better it you have lots of models, I know, so it may not be a helpful suggestion.

Otherwise I would start the Reiklanders over with a few changes to the roster. Blunderbusses like skaven... The two champions are the biggest blow to this warband. That and the handgun. Don't take handguns unless you have no other choice.

Agree with VK. Handguns are not really as viable as crossbows in cost, range, rarity, and rate of fire. I've seen my Reikland crossbows teach many a Skaven upstart a lesson! Sorry to hear about your warband, but in a small campaign, it really is better for each player to have 2 warbands for the same reasons VK stated.

Hey, I agree two player tends to turn into a landslide in one direction. Playing two warbands counters that and adds variety.

Also regarding restarting warbands, sometimes it is right to start anew but consider this. What is hard or not so fun for you can be a lot of fun for your opponent, given the huge level of randomness mordheim is about, next time it could be the other way around. AND it can be fun to see the outcome of a campaign.

I played a campaign where my witch hunter captain was hit by a warlock spell that knocked him of a building, where he promptly broke his neck! But the warrior priest became the leader, it changed the entire gameplay of my warband. Of course it was a huge disadvantaged but fun!

Thanks for the response

Yeah we will be having other people joining, likely to be 5/6 people playing from time to time over the next few months

I nearly went for blunderbus - only wanted a handgun because I like the model and it's useless in current Warhammer army!

I'll give it some thought

it's useless in Mordheim too unless you house rule it. there is a semi current talk about it in the rules forum if you want to look in on that.

It can't hurt to look into some changes to get to use the hand gun AND make it worth taking.

if you guys don't want to change the rules then just call your guy with the hand gun as having ether a crossbow or blunderbuss.

Pervavitas recommendation is a good. Use house rules or play the handguns as counts as crossbows.

If you are playing with more people stick to the warband. Were the levelups for the heroes acceptable?

Marksman with BS5 are awesome. Add onemore and buy hem longbows f you can affordit.mThe -1 T champion is also now a range combat fighter.

The next game is hard with only 3 heroes. But maybe you can root voluntarily early with hopefully no heroes OOA.

Skaven can be a hard opponent. They are fast and come in huge numbers. The sling is a decent weapon. By the way did you play the sling with official nerfed rules? If you double shoot you get -1 to hit on each shot. This makes them more controlable.

In my group i mostly play one opponent 60-70% of the time and we need to change the warbands often due to have a proper ballancing and the fact that we love to play new warbands.

So good luck.
