The rules state that any surviving hero gets to explore during the exploration phase. I thought I read somewhere that this meant any hero who was not taken out of action. We always played that it was any hero who survived and did not roll bad on the injury chart. So, if a hero was taken out of action and made a full recovery then he is able to explore, but if he rolls poor and takes an injury away then he can not explore that exploration phase. We also count Bitter Enmity, Hardened, and Horrible Scars as a "full recovery" for purposes of exploration as they are more "positive" rolls that wouldn't prevent him from doing his normal duties.

How does everyone else play this?

this is how my gaming group plays it. so if all goes out of action means no income and no exploration.

The rulebook says
Quote :
Roll a D6 for each hero in the warband who survives without going out of action.., Do not roll for any heroes that went out of action during the battle, they are taken back to the warband's encampment to recuperate instead.

I have to say, your way might be fun though. It would be much more forgiving to a warband that takes more risks.

That seems really harsh, especially since if all your heroes go out of action you likely lost, the other person got experience for all the kills, and they get a bonus to exploration already. Our way at least gives you a chance to get something as long as at least one of your heroes makes a recovery, but doesn't just give you full exploration typically.

I wonder... what if we did it our way, but put in a penalty on the rolls for any heroes who were taken out of action? Yeah, it might be a little more confusing but at least a warband that just got destroyed still has a chance at keeping up.

well if you use voluntary rout if 25% of your band has gone OoA, and should not take unnecessary risks then there is no harm done Wink

Yeah, but where is the fun in that? :p

Also, for groups like Possessed, exploration in the early game is damn near impossible. Either you have several heros and you can only rout when some are taken out of action, or you have very few heroes and a lot of henchman. I can't tell you how many times I've had to restart my Possessed warband because I just can't make enough money in exploration phase to replace what I've lost.

only heroes not OOA can explore. yes its harsh but with 6 heroes, haggle and wyrdstone hunter you can still make more income than you'll ever need

I like the risk taking - I mean, Mordheim can't be safe all the time right? If you are bold you risk things - some times you win, some times you lose... charming I say

hmmm I did the risk taking yesterday... 6 heroes... and only one survived... rolled a 3 and that was it... 2 heroes permanently dead, and my rating was set back quite a bit! haha

but it was fun to go all out on a monstrous vampire and reducing his wounds significantly... just not enough to kill the b(r)at...

I like the Idea, but don't think you should allow all survivors to loot... they are still alive, but only cause they managed to weakly crawl to safety... which is not your ideal moment to search for valuables...

I did try some markers though a while back, which allowed ingame income;

You find a marker, roll to see what it is, you can only carry so much (one model will not carry two suits of armour etc.) and claim it. if you find something else or better, you can choose to drop the first and take the other, or let someone else take it...

of course, their might always be a random encounter in the box! Smile

we weren't finished playtesting it though.

Hi,

Can you clarify one thing for me please, are all warbands allowed to do exploration or only the winning one? It does not clearly state in the rules. My colleagues recon that only the winning team should do the exploration but in that case the loosing team would be fubar. Any chance you can help me with that?

Warriors from all warbands can roll for exploration. Polar Star has quoted the relevant section from the rulebook above. It does not specify the winning heroes so it refers to all.

You are right that the losing team would suffer badly without any exploration as there would be no chance to rehire lost warriors and buy more equipment. It would not be fun.
