That definitely keeps theme better, and can force your opponent to change tactics, but still only range 16" and pretty expensive. I'd say you gotta get maces for the Marksmen - those blunderbusses are only one shot per scenario.

I'm also considering hiring an Elf Ranger, (It wont fit the theme perfectly but he could easily be converted to be the crows nest guy carrying a telesope/compass whatnot) for some ranged support and the seeker rule. Would he be worth it (Specifically the Seeker Rule)?

He would probably replace one of the blunderbussers (if I go that route) but he could fit in somehow.

Personally, I've never found that Hired Swords are worth having until the warband was at maximum size, and then my first Hired Sword is a Halfling Scout, in order to get another regular warband member. However, some here have a vastly different opinion - look back a page in this thread for the conversation between xarly22 and myself for more on this.

Hi all, I have a load of Warbands I've been writing up, but I haven't really played many games of Mordheim ... so apart from a few guides (Mordheimer) these are pretty amateur. I'll do one at a time for the moment, let me know what you think.

SWORDS OF ALTDORF - REIKLAND MERCENARIES

Mercenary Captain 'Konrad' - 60gc
Sword - 10gc
Brace of Pistols - 30gc
Dagger - Free

Champion 'Gunter' - 35gc
Halberd - 10gc
Dagger - Free

Champion 'Siegmund' - 35gc
Sword - 10gc
Mace - 3gc
Dagger - Free

Young Blood 'Wilhelm' - 15gc
Mace - 3gc
Dagger - Free

Young Blood 'Lanric' - 15gc
Mace - 3gc
Dagger - Free

2 Swordsmen 'The Reik's Blades' - 70gc
Two Swords - 20gc x 2
Daggers - Free

3 Marksmen 'Konrad's Deadeyes' - 75gc
Long Bows - 15gc x 3
Maces - 3gc x 3
Daggers - Free

10 Members
86 Warband Rating
27 Gold Coins Remaining

Pretty basic, I imagine I would expand with 2 more Swordsmen and 3 more Marksmen, perhaps with Crossbows or Handguns (Or split the marksmen into groups of 2 each with Long Bows, Crossbows and Handguns?). Other than that I don't know where to go with the likes of hired swords, though I'm leaning towards a Warlock and an Elven Ranger, perhaps an Ogre Bodyguard for some muscle.

Another of my Warbands I've been working on, got alittle feedback on this one elsewhere.

THE MANCATCHERS - SKAVEN WARBAND

Assassin Adept 'Shadowskrot'
Weeping Blades, Dagger - 110gc

Black Skaven 'Hackitt'
Halberd, Dagger - 50gc

Black Skaven 'Slashitt'
Fighting Claws, Dagger - 75gc

Eshin Sorcerer '...... Tim?' (name pending, suggestions welcome)
Sword, Dagger - 55gc

Night Runner 'Skabskitter'
Sword, Sling, Dagger - 32gc

Night Runner 'Ratfink'
Sword, Sling, Dagger - 32gc

4 Verminkin 'The Rat Runners'
Spears, Slings, Daggers - 128gc

9 Members
81 Warband Rating

As far as expanding the Warband I think definately another 4 Verminkin and despite the disadvantage I quite like the idea of taking some Giant Rats and a Rat Ogre for some muscle.

I am also putting together a Skaven warband and would like any pointers anyone can give me! One thing i am not sure of is whether or not you can weild an essentially 2H weapon like FC or WP and still use a slingshot? The below lists are based on the idea that you can. I am pretty set on my Night Runners and Verminkin but am having trouble with the Adept and the Black Skaven. This is based on a warband of 10 models.

Eshin Sorceror, with Sling and Spear = 57gc
Night Runners x 2, each with sling, club and free dagger = 50gc
Verminkin x2, each with sling, club and free dagger = 50gc
Verminkin x2, each with sling, spear and free dagger = 64gc

= 221 points, giving me 279 points left. My choices are:

Adept Assassin, Warplock pistol, Sword = 105gc
Black Skaven, Sling, Fighting Claws = 77gc
Black Skaven, Sling, Weeping Blades = 92gc

-OR-

Adept Assassin, brace of warplock pistols = 130gc
Black Skaven, Sling, Fighting Claws = 77gc
Black Skaven, Sling, Fighting Claws = 77gc
(i would swap the Sorcerors spear with a club to get enough gc)

-OR-

Adept Assassin, weeping blades, sling = 112gc
Black Skaven, Sling, Fighting Claws = 77gc
Black Skaven, Sling, Fighting Claws = 77gc
(leaves 13gc spare)

A note on Fighting Claws syblla

Cumbersome: A model armed with Fighting Claws may not use any other weapons in the entire battle.

So I wouldn't bother with the slings. Other than that your first and third option look the most appealing to me (I'm not sure how well an Adept will do with just pistols). Of course thats just my novice opinion Smile

Thanks for the tip on "Cumbersome"! After talking it through with my bf this is the band I will be starting with... I'd have liked to have gotten a warplock pistol just because they're rare, but i think this is a fairly balanced warband to start with:

Adept Assassin, weeping blades, throwing star = 125gc
Black Skaven, Fighting Claws = 75gc
Black Skaven, Fighting Claws = 75gc
Eshin Sorceror, with Sling and Spear = 57gc
2 x Night Runners each with sling, club and free dagger = 50gc
2 x Verminkin each with sling, club and free dagger = 50gc
2 x Verminkin each with sling, spear and free dagger = 64gc

= 10 models / 496gc

1 noob question - what's "warband rating"? Where do i find that info?

Warband rating is the numerical value of your warband.

Add it up by doing as follows:

1) Add All of your experience together, heroes and henchmen

2)Multiply how many people in your warband by 5

3)Factor in the hired swords

4)Add 20 for each big guy you have (Rat ogre, in your case)

And there you have it!

I'm looking to start a Marauders of Chaos's Warband, here what I'm considering:

Chieftain, w/light armour, double handed weapon and helm= 140gc
Champion w/heavy armour, helm, axe and shield= 110gc
Seer w/mark of the eagle, w/halberd= 55gc
Marauder x2 axe=40gc
Marauder x2 axe=40gc
Marauder x2 axe=40gc
4 warhounds= 60gc

tot= 500gc
models: 10

Actually I want to have a one or two "Chaos Warrior" in my warband, with all the heavy equipment... This is fine for my thematic warband (Tzeentch cult with egyptian design, like the "Thousand Sons" Legion in WH40k). However I do not know what is the better equipment for them... ( see my topic: http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/painting-and-modelling-f3/marauders-of-chaos-tzeentch-t2910.htm )

Do you want to play "fluffy" list, which is mostly "cool", or do you want to play a list that is "good", concerning fine-tuning of weapons and equipment?

In case of the latter, I suggest:
- Get rid of the Light Armour. It is not worth the money. In fact, most armour is pretty useless. Don't even bother with Heavy Armour. If you use the optional rules for shields (see back of the BTB book), then shield + weapon is worth a thought but in general armour is not worth it. Later in the campaign, if you have the spare money, then you can invest in some good armour such as Chaos Armour.
- For weapons the most cost-effective weapon combination is to with free dagger plus club/hammer/mace for 3 gc. This gives you an additional attack and costs nearly nothing. Upgrades to other weapons can be considered later. An axe e.g. is only useful if your opponent makes heavy use of armour, which is really unlikely. In most cases you are better off with the cheaper club instead.
- It is worth trying to squeeze 13 models in the starting list so that you have to start testing for routing after you lost 4 models instead of after 3. If you drop the armour and the expensive weapons (3 gc clubs instead), then you might be able to include them.
- Now this is important: Max out your starting number of Heroes! Heroes are very very important during a campaign because they produce your income. Without Heroes you don't get enough money to hire new warriors and buy new equipment. So when writing down your list, start with all available heroes and then see how much money you have left and which henchmen you can buy from that money.

Lastly, which Tribe do you want to play?

Thanks for the advises, Cianty beastmen - Starting warbands - Post them here! (Read first post, plz) - Page 31 Icon_smile

Mh, Isn't the first time i read that heavy armors are useless.
This is sad, because I really love heavy Chaos warriors beastmen - Starting warbands - Post them here! (Read first post, plz) - Page 31 Icon_sad
So if I want start a new warband I should not include them, for now. But later I could include a chaos armor. Is this Chaos Armor different from the standard heavy armor? Actually I have not yet read all the rules, and I'm hoping to find a guy than could help me with a sample skirmish.

I think I will choice a Norse tribe.

Well, after considering all the options I'm looking to start this warband:

Ancient Khemri Cult of Harakhthe the Great God Hawk, Master of the Change.

Chieftain w/free dagger and axe= 100gc
Seer w/Mark of the Eagle, w/free dagger and hammer= 48gc
Champion= w/free dagger and hammer= 50gc
Champion= w/free dagger and hammer= 50gc
Condemned= 55gc
Marauder w/free dagger and hammer= 38gc
Marauder w/free dagger and hammer= 38gc
Marauder w/free dagger and hammer= 38gc
Marauder w/free dagger and hammer= 38gc
3 Warhounds= 45gc

TOT= 500gc
Models= 12

I choice Hammer because they are cheap, however with some points I give Axes to the heroes.

I will use a "Norse" tribe rules, however, do you think than a Kurgan tribe should be better? I could incluse some bows, this should be not bad.

Looks good to me.

You could consider replacing one Marauder henchman with two Warhounds which would raise your number of models to 13 so you have to make Rout tests later (as mentioned above).

Then, with so many dogs it is worth considering giving a Steel Whip to one of the Champions to enrage the dogs.

However, starting with more marauders instead of dogs is also good as it allows you to gain more experience early on and thus increase your chances on a 'Lad's Got Talent'. On the other hand, the dogs are the strongest in the beginning of a campaign and only become weaker as your opponent's models earn experience and level up.

If you want to go the warhound route, you could consider choosing the Kurgan tribe in order to buy even more dogs. As well as bows if you want to, of course.

There is not meant to be one single best way to play this warband and the final decisions should really be based on your preferred play style and fluff.

Mh... I will consider if include two warhounds.

Actually I Hope to gain experience and gold early to buy a pair of chaos armors for my champions. I really want to include them in my warband, so I can include my modified "Thousand Sons" Chaos Warrior.
With the Norse tribe is easier to find rare equipment too.

Hey guys been awhile since i posted and have been busy playing my skaven warband. Afew more guys at my club are getting into mordheim and making a nice new board for it so i thought i may start a new band and have been eyeing off beastmen. How's this list look.

Chief - 85gc
sword
battle axe
helmet

shaman - 53
mace
axe

bestigor - 53
mace
battle axe

bestigor - 53g
mace
battle axe

centigor - 88g
battle axe
mace

gor - 43g
battle axe
mace

gor - 43g
battle axe
mace

4 warhounds - 60g

total - 478

I'd have liked to have my 2 bestigors using greatweapons for looks and telling them apart easy but i've always had a bad opinion of 2handers in mordheim (besides my black skaven with flail he rules), I'm also wondering if it's worth taking ungors?

Well I'm all for looks and style over deadliest weapon combo, you can always try to gain the Strongman Skill for your Bestigor which helps offset the penalty for double-handed weapons, making them quite good to my knowledge. Typically axes aren't considered that great unless your opponents commonly take armour, but again, if your going for look its good to me.

I see axes and maces as more likely in the hands of beastmen then a sword. To me a sword is a more graceful weapon whereas my b3eastmen would be just hitting hard.

I see axes and maces as more likely in the hands of beastmen then a sword. To me a sword is a more graceful weapon whereas my b3eastmen would be just hitting hard.

Beastmen are not blacksmiths or anything so they pick up the weapons from their dead enemies. So it's not really their own choice which weapons they exactly have at hand. Fluffwise the Bestigors would have the better weapons and armour, so they'd get halberds and swords first and the rest of the warband takes what's left.

Well, cianity, it depends on your definition of better. Fluff wise, from the perspective of a beastman, a sword would probably not be a very good weapon. A sword is a precision tool. It requires technique to get the most damage out of it. This requires training. A Beastman relies on brute strength for his attacks, in his opinion an axe or a mace would probably be a "better" weapon than a sword because they are built to maximize the potential of "hit it harder" type fighting. I agree on the halberd though, essentially a halberd is an axe on a long pole.

You are right. Swords are not amongst their preferred weapons.

I wouldn't normally consider getting a Big Guy off the bat, but these are Halflings so I decided some serious muscle couldn't go to wrong. Anyone tried this warband before? Hows it fair?
