Hello guys,
I make terrain and would love feedback on my pieces. The wonderfully skilled theomar pius showed me this website.
I've been doing this for about 4 months, so am still in the early learning stages. I don't play Mordheim nor Warhammer, I just like to make things.
Most of what i make I try to sell because I have little use of it.
Here's a few of my older pieces:

If you want to see more or some of the older pieces feel free to visit my blog:

Thanks for watching

LOOKIN' GOOD! You have some attractive pieces; considering how new you are at it, the things you make will get even better rather quickly. WELL DONE! thumbsup

You will probably have greater success selling your creations if you do them for a particular game or style of game. Don't look to make your fortune with terrain modeling, gamers who will pluck down some big $s for a mini or two suddenly go cheap with terrain...at least that's been my experience. Suspect

Absolutely right. Shops also try to pay less than you'll expect... Good luck man!

Welcome to the forum!

Great stuff you've been building. The only issue with some of your houses were those huge, round rocks (on the first two buildings), which look a bit unrealistic.

The rest is just plain awesome! You also paint really well, which does justice to the terrain you build.

I would like to see more soon! Smile

I have to agree with Joao, you paint quite well, I think the bridges on your blog are quite well done.

Yeah I've realized terrain is quite cheap compared to the price of a painted mini. It's a hobby for now so unless I work at Weta Workshop I'm not going to make big bucks out of it. Not my intention anyway.
I do have a long term plan which will consist on giving one-on-one terrain classes. If I can keep this up I'll try and launch it next summer

Thanks a lot! There's still so much to improve on tho, but I'm hoping time will help with that Smile

Welcome!

Thank you master! Ha

Merchant house finished.
Quite pleased with this although there's still a ton of things to be improved. Especially the stone and the roof.
The walls came out rather nice imo, especially considering they're flat, with no texture added to them (no filler or plaster).
The stains can also be reworked, they always come out so dark and pop out way too much.

Major problem of mine is having shadows and highlights. This makes the roof rather flat looking.

Crits and comments are most welcome!

PS: it randomly ended up being a pottery. I had to write a name and draw something... need finer brushes for sure
PPS: could someone guide me to take better pics? Not much of a photogapher
PPPS: do you think I'm rushing my work? Because this took me about a day to paint (so roughly 6-7 hours). I fell I could do more but not sure

Glad to hear. I see people talking about a gazillion layers of paint, so mine feels rushed Sad

I'm outraged! you don't like my freehand foam sculpting?!?! Is that what you're saying?!?!?! I agree they look pretty terrible haha. Wanted to try something out, didn't work so well

Thanks. Practice practice practice is the key

WIP of a new project. It's a contest with the theme artefact.
I wanna be totally unoriginal and make a big excavation site where they dig an long lost eldar webgate. It probably doesn't make sense with WH lore but it's mostly for fun.

Help me decide which design I pick. There's gonna 4, half dug up, 1 or 2 broken. They will have the same design with slightly different details (thus me only picking one).

I'll probably use the others to make webgates someday...

Sooo, the excavation project has officially started. I thought I could try my best and have sort of a tutorial by having a lot of step by steps too have a feel of my workflow for this project.

Getting the overall layout of the piece. Where everything will end up:
Wanna's terrain thread Img0778w

I then start tackling the mountain side. Lots of foam uncarved:
Wanna's terrain thread Img0779t

Once carved you get this:
Wanna's terrain thread Img0780ts

Then I'm starting with all the levels going down. Starting with the bottom one:
Wanna's terrain thread Img0781nm

I then move on the the next ones:
Wanna's terrain thread Img0782ng

I originally had only 4, but quickly realized I needed more levels, so here's the final result, with the half buried eldar wings:

An archeological dig...what a VERY COOL idea! It's coming along WONDERFULLY & it's at the stage that where you're going with the Beasty is starting to become apparent...but not quite. Keep up the FINE WORK! thumbsup

Thanks a lot!

Sooo I've got a big announcement to make. I've started my new studies which means I have a lot less time for terrain now ( in addition to starting to run 1hr a day+ other sports again). So no more full time terrain making. Makes me cry a bit inside but I knew it was coming.
For those curious, I'm studying germanic languages (dutch+english) to become a teacher. But considering my current end goal has things to do with terrain I'm not stopping anytime soon with that.

Without further ado, I'll say what I've done recently with the project.

So as I finished the main structure I had to start and detail it. SO I've done that the last 3 days.
Starting at the bottom
Wanna's terrain thread Img0786nx

Here's how I do my support structures
Wanna's terrain thread Img0787fk

Slowly I move up
Wanna's terrain thread Img0788zg

Add the second "floor" there
Wanna's terrain thread Img0789kk

Up to the top!
Wanna's terrain thread Img0790wv

General view of the thing right now (better quality than previous too)
Wanna's terrain thread Img0791pg

Close up of the top:
Wanna's terrain thread Img0792qdx

What's left to do:
-add the diagonal support beams for the upper level (they support the levels and lean against the mountain side)
-get the dirt texture on the ground floor
-do the lader for the 2 storey level and cut a hole in the 2nd storey.
-Add all the details that will "pull the dirt" up, like levels, ropes and things that could possibly bring the stuff that's being dug to the top
-Add the eldar wings, detail them and allow them to have a balance system
-flesh out the mountain, give texture to the sides that have been cut for the convenience of the excavation
-Put layers of filler on the mountain the give it the required texture
-add smaller details like barrels, bags, tables, boxes (using molds and the like [1st I'll be doing that])
-Paint it all up
-stuff I forgot (help me out here)

I'm also hesitating with what I should be doing on the highest levels (which is flat atm).
I'm thinking I should build a wooden structure kinda like an outpost sort of thing. Yes? no?

See you all soon

VERY NICE PROGRESS! The wood scaffolding is BEAUTIFULLY made...I like the metal support pieces are a nice touch. We'll keep an eye open for updates as time permits. thumbsup

A crane might be an idea to add to the upper level; a workman's shanty or two would look good. What a Face

The scaffolds are really good looking, I like the plates and bolts.
When I was unemployed, I was doing scenery full time, and was cranking projects out. Now it's slow progress, but I'm working, so that preferable.

Small update, the project goes on really slowly. I was very ill last week, thus not touching the piece at all. My sleep schedule has also been messed with so I end up being tired most of the time.
Adding to that the fact that school takes away time and a lot of energy.
One week left for it, should be fine, but it will feel rushed to me :s

I haven't taken any wips lately, so just so you see where I'm at it.
Better than I thought tho, the ground/upper floor details and final touches are lef ton my to-do list.

So many replies 0.0
Thank you all so much for the support, I wish I could live up to the expectations and deliver something worthy. Next time I promise!

So the project is done...without being done. The group build ends tonight, so I post the pictures now with everything assembled.
To be honest I really feel I rushed it, so it's probably very visible. And lost of things I couldn't implement in time sur as the highest floor, ground floor which is way too flat, not enough details, I wanted to have light effects as well....
Big ideas....out of my grasp maybe. I'll work on it some more during next few days, to try and push it where I initially wanted it to be. And I'll paint the poly from the first layer black because it really pops out and looks mean.
Horrible quality of pics because it's night time Sad

Wanna's terrain thread Img0803sz
Wanna's terrain thread Img0804uv
Wanna's terrain thread Img0805zn
Wanna's terrain thread Img0806f

The story about this:
A small group of dwarves fell upon a wierd stone they had never seen before. It was blacker than the night. As they digged a bit deeper, they saw it was part of a bigger structure, thus they began digging and going down what would then become a cliff. As they went lower and lower, they needed ways to get back up. So they made wooden structures at certain intervals to be able to get back to ground level.
After months of digging, it seems they have finally uncovered the whole structure, 4 giant pillars. A strange and evil force surounds them, and a red glow still flows through the stone.

That is a great project and well done.
It will be fun to play on I'm sure.
My only negative I can see to this is that the structure looks a little flat. I can see that the base of each one isn't done but I'm meaning the actual structure of it seams to be flat and lifeless compared to the rest of it. Maybe more rounding or just bulking it up beyound the cardboard thickness would help.
Don't get me wrong the whole thing is great; just when comparing them together you have what looks like a real pit with real work done and a cardboard cut out is what they found.
