Hello out there!

First of all, sorry if this has been asked before - i have searched the forum and didnt find any topic like this..

I recently talked my gaming group into starting a mordheim campaign, and now we are standing before the daunting progress of making the necessary terrain.. We have planned to start our campaign in 2 weeks, and we are basically starting from scratch.. We have bought all the materials needed (foamcore, blue foam, wooden sticks, cardboard and so on) but have do we make the best of it? What would you suggest we start to make? Which pieces of terrain is absolutely crucial to a mordheim table?

I hope you understand my question, and have some helping answers Smile

Jon

Ruined buildings. Lots and lots of ruined buildings. The city of Mordheim was one of the largest in the Empire, and when the comet hit, it laid waste to a HUGE area, so most of the surrounding areas were pretty devastated. Most pieces that I've seen are 2-3 walls with lots of holes and debris scattered over everything. About half of them have a 2nd story as well. If you check out the scenery threads here on the forums, you'll get plenty of inspiration.

Thanks for the reply, but i meant more specifics Smile I know you need a lot of ruins, but what kind is optimal? Just ground-level ones for sinplicity, or some higher ones to get good vantage points? And what about barricades? Or those ideal? I hope you understand Smile

on a very basic level, you need LOS blockers, ruins to fight over and areas such as walkways and balconies.

have a basic idea of what you want to build and sketch some plans.

I'd say try for at least the equivalent of the original starter terrain

you'll find buildings develop character as much as your models do. sometimes it's best to start basic and see how things develop.

though one thing i'd say is pretty important. Ladders.

Very Happy

then try piles of crates and barrels, statues, old markets etc. all will add character to the games

For the first few buildings I'd go for something worth fighting over: e.g., a tavern, a rich merchants house, a blacksmith/armorer, wizards tower, etc.. While I tend to go in for multistory buildings, two or three floors is nice...remember to make ladders & connecting walkways.
Piles of rubble, 1 or 2 walled low ruins, impromptu cover: boxes, barrels, & such, are vital to advance if against missile types....SO this sort of thing should be on the list also. What a Face

I'm lucky to have had 2 box sets to start with structures (and even then it's far from enough buildings).

With your time restraint of starting in about 2 weeks I would start with some basic buildings.
Make a few ruins that are simply the remaining corner of a building "L" shapes. These will give you good cover fast and you can place them close together easy to form larger 1 story (at least remaining) buildings.
Once you have a few of those you can make a few that have a 2nd story.

With that done (shouldn't take too long if not painting) I would go into making lots of ladders to get to the 2nd story where you can and also make barricades.
My barricades are simply popsicle sticks where I cut off the rounded ends roughly and then used some scrap wood to form the cross piece of wood and glued 2-3 sticks to it.
To prop them up I experimented with a few ways. The simplest I found (but least desirable) was make the base another popsicle stick.
To add character I used a hobby knife to split some “boards” and also used a drill to put some holes in there (gun shot holes). Some of my barricades are solid 3 high and others are 2 high with a side being 3 high or both sides going up 3 high with the center 2 high.
Using this barricades system I also make planks to go from building to building.
You can probably wip out a good number in an afternoon that will be able to give you some cover to add to a lot of places for your table.

Rocks glued to a piece of cardboard also can be used to make a cheap/easy wall.
