PostSubject: Duel of champions   Duel of champions Icon_minitimeThu 12 Apr 2012 - 2:35

Recently I had a conversation with Catachanfrog that made me thinking. We were wondering who would win: a whole starting warband or a beefed up vampire (worth 500gc - with bought skills and equipment as with "fighting individual battles" optional rules). A T6, resilent, step aside etc. vampire in full plate might be a challenge, even for a whole warband - but I guess couple lucky rolls might bring him down. Probably someone has thought of this earlier, but what the hell Wink

What if such warrior should be pitted against other powerhouse hero?

It would go something like this:

  • Both players have 500 gc at their disposal (600 if hero is a marienburger), each chooses a hero from some existing warband.

  • hero is equpped from his warband equipment list, trading section of rulebook and other lists (like opulent goods). No rolling for rarity or +xD6gc. when buying items from trading lists (catachanfrog idea). Weapon expert still needed to use more exotic weapons.

  • hero buys skills and stats as with "fighting individual battles" optional rules.

  • Name your hero, give him some background story and...

  • Both players roll dice - higher result count as charging - duel begins, Gong Yi Tanpai!

this could be changed into some mini pit fighting champaign setting.

An example:

Nori Gunarsson
Dwarf noble - a proud descendant of an ancient but impoverished dwarf noble house. When gold ran out he was forced to don his father armor and fight in the pits to make the ends meet
Equipment : 2x dwarf axe, gromril armor, helmet
Skills: Master of blades, step aside, Strike to injure, resilient, mighty blow
Stats: Ws5 S4 T5 A2 I4 Ld 9

Math: noble 85 /equpement (total) - 115 gc. /five skills - 200gc/ stats - 100gc ----> 500gc.

We do something like that in my group Smile
We however keep it down to 300 gc. Its pretty funny to test different hero builds this way, and the "fighting individual battles" list is working great for this. We allow one rare item roll, and if it fails, no rare for you.
Then after making the heroes, each player rolls a d6 and adds his movement to see who gets the first turn. We assume that the heroes are withing changerange and short range (of all weapons) and you cant move further away. The only availeble movement in fact. is to charge the other.

Had a vampire fail his garlic tjeck, only to be crit hit by a sling last time :p

Sgt. Gabriel Mulcayhee
(Averlander) Sergeant - The son of a woodsman, young Gabriel grew up with an axe in his hand. After joining the Imperial army Gabriel quickly took to the sword. While on one of many patrols in Blackfire Pass, Pvt. Mulcayhee's squad was ambushed by a full regiment of Orcs. The Averlander soldier's fought and died to the last man, save one. Only the resilient Mulcayhee was left standing facing the host of Orcs. He shouted curses at his adversaries and whispered a quick prayer to Sigmar rubbing his lucky Rabbit's Foot. The gathered Orcs yelled out a thunderous WAAAGH as they were about to fell the last of the human troupe. The incredible noise echoed across the canyon, and rocks began to fall from high above the pass, as a rock slide started a mere 5 feet from where Muclayhee stood. Gabriel ran forward striking the Orc leader with a mighty blow and then turned and dodged falling boulders, in some cases stepping aside at only the last minute, as he made his way up the canyon wall. The Orcs below fled in disarray, and Gabriel made his way back to the regiment's encampment to inform them of the days events. After that day, Sgt. Gabriel Mulcayhee would never again know fear and had gained a reputation as an accomplished fighter

Equipment: Sword, Axe, Rabbit's Foot, Dark Venom
Skills: Mighty Blow, Resilient, Fearsome, Step Aside
Stats: Ws6 S4 T4 W3 I5 A4 Ld7

Math: Sergeant 35gc/equipment 55 gc = 90 gc + 4 skills 160 gc + stats 250 gc = 500 gc

Tried my 500 gc hero vs a 500 gc Vampire as suggested in the first post. The results were rather sad.

T6, you need a two-handed weapon, and even then if the Vampire has S6 or S7, you are wounded so easily.

Yeah the big problem with this is that if you have crazy amounts of gold to funnel into stat boosts etc then the character with the higher/better racial maximums will normally win, since a character can only benefit so much from additional weapons/armour +skills.

Blue chip investments are always the best ^^

If you really want to have fun and completely balanced games with this you should really stick with the one race, but thats just my opinion.

Well, that never was even meant to be balanced Smile

Vamps and possesed will always have an upper hand, don't see what I can do about it.

Now I'm thinking - this could be fun if used during regular campaigns. Players pit heroes against each other in order to add some spice to exploration phase. Settling campaign issues through personal combat, some side bets, maybe small rewards and +1 exp. for the winner. Could be fun. Players don't have to use their mightiest heroes, a dreg vs. youngblood could be interesting too.

Heck, you wouldn't even have to give the +1 EXP, it would just be a more fun way than rolling a dice or flipping a coin.

Someone who can face a vampire ??

Hmmm..

Tomb Lord Maybe (supposing you play in some kind of arena where ranged weapons are banned I guess)

M:4 WS:6 BS:3 S:5 T:5 Wnd:5 I:3 Ld:8

Equipment: Sword,Axe, Light armour, Lucky charm, Rabbit foot, Healing herbs, Garlic

Skills: Mighty blows, Resilient, Strike to injure, Step aside

Hiring cost (150) + stats (105) + equipment (76) + skills (160) = 491 GC

However, I'd play the game in some kind of arena so you could shoot before engaging and this can change alot. (I'd equip it with a bow, asp arrows and javelins, add knife thrower skill and drop mighty blows/strike to injure/light armour)

I find this whole thing interesting and could be a lot of fun.

Now to start I figure a base line Vampire would be needed... I tried to max out his relative stats and give him heavy armour, and the above skills... this cost way too much so i dumped armour and did not max out strength or WS.
Vampire
Equipment: Sword, Club, Lucky Charm, Rabbits Foot
Skills/Rules: Step Aside, Resilient
Stats: M6, WS 6, BS 4, S 6, T 6, W 4, I 5 A 4, Ld 8
Math: Vampire: 110 GC+ Equipment: 33 GC+ Stats: 275 GC Skills: 80 GC
Total GC: 498

It is still a beast to match up against.

Now as I'm an Amazon player that was my main objective to work with... With that said his Heavy Armour was useless anyway in this match up so it helps him not to have it Wink

(Amazons) Totem Warrior
Equipment: Claws of the Old Ones, Axe, Lucky Charm, Rabbits Foot, Flash Powder, Garlic, Helmet
Skills/Rules: Frenzy, Strike to Injure, Step Aside, Mighty Blow
Stats: M4, WS 6, BS 2, S 4, T 4, W 3, I 3 A 4, Ld 7
Math: Totem Warrior: 30 GC+ Equipment: 91 GC+ Stats: 230 GC Skills: 120 GC
Total GC: 491

The thing of note here is that I do think the Amazon can win but she must get the charge and that is why the Flash Powder and Garlic.

To make this more of a build chalange and fun I would think Movement (Charge Distance) should be added into the mix to determen "who" gets the charge.
With that I would drop "Step Aside" for "Sprint" and Helmet for Caltraps... to give me every chance to get the Charge I could get.
Even with that though the Totem Warrior would have trouble bringing him down with her 8 attacks at Strength 5.

I think it would be best to start at about 15" and then missile combat might come into play, but probably for just one shot or two. A 6" move couldn't charge immediately in most cases, and if you move the right distance, you might create a failed charge scenario.
