PostSubject: From zero to Mordheim in two weeks...   From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Icon_minitimeSat 11 Feb 2012 - 18:39

Greetings, this will be my first super serial post on the forum after my introduction on the newbies board so let's get down to it shall we?

I recently got speaking to one of my close friends about mordheim, and my love of it, but ofc it's pretty difficult to explain with words everything that makes the game so much fun...so I said to him "Hey, you know what? Why don't I put together a few games the next time you're down? (we live in different cities) Then you can make up your own mind about it?" He was all "Coooooooooo bra" and that was that...until I realised that it would only be two weeks till he was in the city...and I had not a single bit of appropriate scenery to hand...and I had never actually built any tabletop terrain before... pale but I thought "A screw it!... QUE THE MUSIC!"

What follows is a bunch of random photos and explanations of the various pieces of scenery I made for our introductory games, I was not originally planning on documenting the whole ting so there are a few omissions and not much of a logical consistency between the images ^^' But hey, on with the show!

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Scenery4
This was the first piece of scenery I made, pretty much your standard corner ruin, like most of the scenery it is made simply out of some foamcore and wooden popsicle sticks, it was mostly a warm up piece to get me familiar with the materials and scale I would be working with.

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Furniture
I also made some tiiiny tiiiny furniture out of a few scrap sticks that were too short to be of better use...and tbh I just really wanted to see if I could do it or not ^^'

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Scenery3
Next up I made a bunch of pieces of varying sizes(Mordheim box owners may recognise the building on the left, with the bridge, as being based on the old bridgehouse that came with it Wink I actually managed to find a few of the old house sprues lying around in the attic so I have tried to put some windows/doors around for old times sake.

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Ruins
Some more up close shots of some ruins I made, they were super quick to make and are fairly flexible gameplay wise.

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Scenery1
Another shot of some bits and pieces assembled, including a barricade and ghetto street sign/archway (i'm planning on making market square and for this piece to be a nice entrance or toll booth type deal)

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Bar11
Next up I decided that since I have made enough stuff to cover a good deal of the table, I wanted a unique focal point of the table, something still modular, but with enough character to make it more than just another ruined residence, so I began work on the pub! (Still needing a name for it, I'm thinking it will be ran by dwarfs, you see why when I get to posting the battle reports... any name suggestions?)

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Bar2
The bar in a more finished state...

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Bar3
And the back of said bar, I finished off the stairway on the other side as well but don't think I took any pics of it...

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Barrels
Ofc no bar would be complete without some quality alcohol !

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Tree
My first attempt at a copper wire tree, I'm going to green sutff on a warped trunk and have it coming though some paving stones, a suitable chaos tree

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Bar
From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Scenery5
Just a couple pics of me playing with the bar scenery to try out interesting layouts and judge scale etc...The Jack Daniels and Coke is not part of the table ^^'

And that's the lot! In two weeks I managed to make enough scenery to fill a dense 2x4 table which was more than enough for a good few small games to whet my friend's appetite. He loved the games and is now very keen to expand the table and start up a small campaign to see how it all pans out in the long run! Below are some pics of the battles so you can see how it all fits together...

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Battle1
Beastman Leader- "Charge down the long narrow street towards the crossbow wielding dwarfs with the high ground...what could possibly go wrong!?

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Photo-6
Beastmen- "Give us your booze!...I mean...Rawr...and stuff!"

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Photo-5
Dwarf Lord- "Did you hear something?"
Slayer- "What, sorry? I was thinking about how much I love my axe...you know I think I would go crazy if somebody ever stole it from me..."

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Pile-on
The most complex and intricate of beastmen tactics...the "Pile on" ^^'

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... Photo-2
Dwarfs on balcony singing- "Beastmen to the left of me, beastmen to the right...and here I am, stuck in the middle with you!..." -fire crossbow-

So that was the result of my epic two week build-a-thon. But since the games were such a roaring success...I now have further objectives to complete for the next visit! cheers

1: Build moar generic buildings! (trying too get some more verticality/walkways etc involved and more clutter/barricades/trees. Enough for a 4x4 table)

2: Finish off the bar! (I think it could do with an extra wall containing the entrance etc and then I want to deck it out with some dwarf decorations etc, the bar is crying for something above it...a mounted skaven head or gun...or both! And I like the idea of making a really big feasting table, one large enough to fight on. Finally I will need to actually name the damn thing ^^)

3: Get some more unique pieces in there! (I'm thinking on making stuff to represent a market square. An overgrown park/ manor garden, what better place for the beastmen to hang? and a herdstone. If the dwarfs have their pub I want my herdstone dammit!)

4: Possibly purchase the GW kit "Garden of Morr" I'm really interested to see how far I can stretch the kit ^^

5: Paint them all!

Anyway, that's enough rambling from me! Hope you all enjoyed, I'mm be keeping this post updated when I make/edit more stuff...ciáo!

Excellent work for two weeks effort man!

If you are anything like me, building turns out faster than you'd think, painting seems to take forever.

The tavern is an interesting idea and has some nice angles to it.
I find JD and Coke usually helps getting interesting angles! Smile

I think you are right to think about getting more height into the buildings though as the width of your play surface is a bit limiting. If you cant go out, go up.

Possible Dwarf Pub names:

The Treasure Hunters (obvious but quite fitting)
Karak Ale
Grugni's Arms
Black Water Inn
Zhuf's Bar

I'll stop now.

Thanks for all the photos! You've gotten a lot accomplished. An overgrown park for the Beasts to hang out in sounds like a great project too.

Woo..
That's a whole lotta-terrain in 2 weeks! Looks good too, can't wait to see it painted?

I'm lucky if I can manage 1 piece in 2 weeks....

Just watch out, as making terrain can be addictive Smile

Well it's been a while ^^' As I have said in some other posts, I have been without internet access for some time now, so I'm playing catch up on a number of my posts to show the progress of the different projects. Anyway, without further Adeú! PROGRESS!

First of, I managed to get myself a couple of plastering tables to work as a good fold away table, it makes a 4x6 table in total which works nicely since it essentially gives us a good 4x4 play area and a couple extra feet for books/rosters etc aswell! (Observe the sad looking breakfast bar in the background...shun!)

Next up I picked up a "Garden of Morr" set from GW, it was quite reasonably priced for what you get and with a bit of imagination it is fantastic for fleshing out a mordheim table

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... 538309_381647578536093_1691528807_n

One of my favourite pieces are the fences, they are just so versatile and you can use them in conjunction with your existing pieces to make great looking streets/alleys. Allot of the fences/walls also have great little doors etc on them so you can really make good player paths through an environment...(that's the level designer in me talking) Also the statue that comes with it is niiiice ^^

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... 382395_428221880545329_1230704020_n

In fact...we loved the garden of morr so much we bought another set! xD Now we can make sizable closed off areas and still have pieces left over! We can ever have statue stare-offs across the streets!

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... 198413_428220390545478_625866036_n

I also made a new building (you can see it on the left hand side) that is a corner version of the classic building it's connected to, putting them together makes for some nice looking streets, might make more! (also note the brand new surroundings...that's our new house! yeah HOUSE! It's so grown up and scary, I must model and game more to counter balance this...)

From zero to Mordheim in two weeks... 484380_428222713878579_100000725630445_1272107_1347525880_n

My partner in crime also purchased one of the GW watchtowers for the table. It's a great height and looks rather nice when mixed in the scenery (in terms of rules we play that the doors etc are barricaded, so you must scale it or find a ladder). It also came with a bunch of extra bitz that will no doubt find their way into my future buildings etc.

All in all, not so much of the making terrain, more in the way of buying stuff to compliment the current buildings etc (and absolutely NOTHING in the way of painting, much to my fellow gamer's mirth) but hey, progress is progress. ^^'

Now for the entertaining update...I will soon be holding a birthday shindig at our local hobby store. I am going to run a short, one day long story driven campaign that we are going to play in front of a bunch of potential Mordheim converts...and guess what...IT'S IN TWO WEEKS! xD

Mordheim Two Week Challenge Round Two...FIGHT! (I totally want to make this a thing!)

until next time...

On the 16th of this month...so technically I actually have less than two weeks in which I need to paint 8 more members of my warband and attempt to finish and paint the remaining scenery 0.0

Any tips on a quick but nice way to paint the buildings?

I was thinking, a thin coat of watered down PVA glue mixed with some sand to give them a bit of texture and seal the open foam edges and then paint them...somehow xD Never had to paint scenery before!

Excellent work, sir!

That Garden of Morr is indeed a fantastic buy for how much stuff you get in it.

Indeed, it's a shame that they increased the price by about 25-30% in the most recent price hike though -.-' Just glad we got ours in already!
