Okay, this is NOTHING as grand as some of the amazing work I've seen in this section, but I wanted to try my hand at building some of my own terrain. This is a ruined building with 2 levels and a dock ramp to be set up near the water. I wanted something that would provide a bit of cover from one side and have numerous height levels.

If anyone has some pointers on how I should paint this thing up, I would appreciate it.

Well,

That is one impressive start!
One suggestion, which is very important, is to find some kind of sealant to cover up that white stuff.

Should you decide to hit this piece with a can of primer, it will just melt away if not sealed off.

Okay, what sort of sealant should I use? I was just thinking of using some gray water-based primer on the styrofoam base.

No spray anythings, but a coat of latex paint will seal it fine.

I like the convenience of spray primer and I always want to seal the finished piece with a spray varnish, but that is because I don't like brushing on primer or sealer.

A variety of materials work to seal foam (including a layer of paint), but whatever you use it is wise to test the material first. So I paint a scrap of foam with the material I am using and then spray some primer on the test piece. If it melts, that material is not going to work. So I would recommend painting a scrap of foam with your latex paint and then seeing if that seals the material.

Other points.
Posts--I would add at least another coffee stirrer to each of your posts to give them the illusion of some thickness. Support beams are usually pretty thick, often square cut.

The outside floor--In future projects I recommend alternating the length of floor boards rather than having a single seam. Real floors are not built this way so it will add to the illusion that your model is 'real' if you build your miniature floor like a real one.

The support beam idea is a good one. I've been thinking of how to make those pillars look better. Keep the ideas coming!

I would agree that it is both a VERY IMPRESSIVE start & that the supporting beams need some beefing up. While you're at it, if you draw your saw along the grain you'll add some texture to the wood...it helps give a wood grain effect when you paint the Beasty. Also, for future reference, the rungs on the ladder really should be on the other side. I like the ramp & the upper story deck...looks good & it will work out great for gaming purposes. Keep up the FINE WORK! thumbsup

Don't feel badly about this, but the Gallery is reserved for finished pieces only; SO I'm moving it to the Scenery Section. You should get more reactions & advice there. What a Face

Appreciate it. I saw after I posted that it was in the wrong spot. While the glue's drying, I thought I'd put up some other pics of how it's coming along. Haven't tried sealing the foam parts yet, but I wanted to tweak it enough to get it sturdy before I paint it.
