Introducing others to the city of the damned Empty
PostSubject: Introducing others to the city of the damned   Introducing others to the city of the damned Icon_minitimeMon 9 Apr 2012 - 10:22

Ever since discovering that there was a city that was damned but not grimdark, I have been in love with the game of Mordheim and can't wait to play it. My only problem is, that no-one I know seems to have an interest in Mordheim and/or wargaming in general. So my question to you youngbloods and greybeards is how you introduced people to mordheim and actually got them to play the game?

tl;dr version: How did you get people into Mordheim?

NB: I don't know if this is the right section to post my question in, so Mods, apologies and feel free to move it

Well Smile our group started something like this:

I liked Mordheim, Necromunda and Gorka Morka for years but were rarely able to find decent groups to play with. For a few years i had a job in a gaming club and we had a great mordheim campaign going there, but after i changed job it pretty much died.
Then, during this winter, the larp group i'm playing with startet to fall apart due to the weather. So what to do with that limitid free-time?
I startet to dig up old mini's and paint and decided to make a new warband. This cought the attention of my fiancee who, like me, suddonly lacked a hobby (same larp group).
Now there were two of us talking mordheim and planning terrain and warbands. Showing new projects to freinds whenever they came by. I knew that one of my freinds really wanted to play, but also that he hates to paint and mod. So i offered to make him a warband or two. Chi-ching! 3 player and we're off.
Trends like this is contagous and now several of our mates now and then bring up the subject of "wich warbands do you allow?" or "how do you play this or that rule?". Some are even buying minis and asking how to assemble their warbands.
Most of these guys are mainly larp'ers so its a whole new world for them Wink
We haven't startet our actual campaign yet, but have had a mini campaign and a few one-off games.

My suggestion would be to make two warbands and have some one-offs with your mates and if they like it, they will surely wan't their own warband Smile

Hit up your local RPGer's (As Stronzo said with his LARP crew). Mordheim is the perfect mix of RPG and war game.

Also as a rules introduction and warband intro use the "One time battle" rules in the end of the rule book. this way you guys can play out warbands and see how they play and tweak them as you like. Also you will get more games in sooner as you don't have to do any post battle games. It's simply working out the rules of game play if nothing else. Rule questions will still come up latter on but you will have the basics of "how" the game works out by then and can handle them case by case.

@Brokenv
Cool! I'll have a look around that site- maybe I'll find a few local gamers!

@Stronzo +Pervavita

Thanks for the advice and tips!
Hopefully I can find people who play, or introduce people I know to the game! cheers

I find that actually introducing RPG players and such to wargaming, Mordheim works the best. You dont need that much miniatures, it have great lore and story, naturally appealing to most gamers, and its an easy system to start with.

The best approach, as far as I know, and I have been doing wargaming since the late 70s is that its absolutely, without doubt, best to have a few miniatures for "both" sides for a wargame, or in the case of Mordheim, a bunch of different miniatures, so that people can borrow miniatures and try out the game. This has proved to work very well for our Pirate games, everybody loves pirates, and since we have four different gangs, all with a Pirates of the Caribean style, its easy to get them to try the game. Then I introduce them to Mordheim and WWII Very Happy

How I was introduced to it (and I think is a great way to start) is to have two pre-built "simple" warbands (mercenaries For example) with a few of the major weapon types (some marksmen with a mix of bows/x-bows), a captain with 2 handed weapon, another with 2 clubs, captain with sword, then some warriors with shields/daggers/spears. Then just play a few games (try not to bring in climbing or other "fiddly" things) until you get a feel for the basics of move, shoot, combat, rout.

Then after people are comfortable with that bring in Other warbands, Climbing, all alone, pistols, magic, Hiding, etc. and letting players build their own warbands maybe taking it into a mini campaign with post battle and all.

(I did come from a WH fantasy battle background so if you are playing with people completely new to WH style games maybe start without all the variety of weapons and a totally buildingless battlefield)

Edyy, that is darn near the way I have tough/teaching my sons. My oldest I started at 11 years old and just playing one time battles he is up to speed for playing with full experience with less then 5 test games and this is with no prior WHFB experience (ok I take that back I was teaching him WHFB in a vary basic fashion but only 2 games and he wasn't a big fan) .
My younger son who is 8 has been watching us play now for about 6 months before picking up his first sword dice and entering the battle field. He has played 5-6 games now with mercs in one time battles and is enjoying it.
It's a great way to teach the fundamentals of the game.

I was introduced to Mordheim by Stronzo. In our test campaign I borrowed some of his Bretonnian army minis to represent a quickly made Reiklander warband. It worked for me. I'm a LARP kind of person and soon all the minis had personalities and storylines - and then the borrowed minis just didn't cut it. Now, the first two of my Empirial Archers are painted, and I'm planning my third warband...

It's all true. Sadly most wargamers are too busy fighting apocalyptic military engagements on the battlefields skirting the Empire to be bothered about historical intrigue and street fights on the back alleys and canals of it's greatest cities.

If you can get a couple of folks who paint and collect involved in your campaign it really helps but I too have found that inviting folk who like RPG adventures in the best way to go. They have a better understanding of the various aspects of the Mordheim experience.

If you get lucky then smoking hot ladies like Shelena and Geekgirl might sign up for your next campaign. Wink

Regards,

Werekin

Maybe if I tell them that Mordheim is sorta post-apocalyptic? The end of the world has happened for the folks in Mordheim

Haha! Actually, a good thing about Mordheim is, that looks don't matter. I can finally play a madman (stressing the MAN part) - or a dwarf Wink. Unfortunately, our group has decided to run some ingame LARP sessions where leaders of the warbands meet in taverns outside Mordheim, and they can't wait for me to play a depraved nobleman... pale
