Hello Smile

I'm looking for some advice on fun Possessed builds Smile I own box of Frostgrave Soldiers and box of Cultists so I have many bits to play with but no idea how to equip my new warband. Is there anything I should avoid? What kind and how many warriors should I hire at the beginning? Smile I have very limited hobby time so I'd like to avoid making basic mistakes Very Happy

Welcome to the forum!

Here are the answers to similar questions:

The Frostgrave set is wonderful for filling out the warband after a few games, but isn't really all that useful for the first game or so.  Henchmen that I would recommend starting with are Beastmen, because they make the best promoted heroes for the warband.

I don't buy Brethren until I have a Beastman hero, unless I fail to gain one in those first five games.  Then desperation hits.

Otherwise the Frostgrave sets might provide a good model for the Magister and maybe for the mutants if you have access to any of the numerous mutant bitz that GW or Reaper make.  But I don't see them as useful for the Possessed themselves.

Highjacking this thread a bit.
I checked out all the great threads VK linked, But I didn't seem to find the answers I'm looking for.
So, Three questions:

1: If you give your possessed 2xgreat claw, does all your attacks gain +1 str, or just two out of the four?

2: Can you take more than one scorpion tail? Since you can do it with arms/claws I can't find a reason why not?
Would be nasty to have 2-3 tails.

3: I've read in the other threads that you give mutants extra arms, but how does that work since you're only allowed to use two cc-weapons?

Thanks in advance.

1/ Just two of the four. If you like, think of the normal attacks as flailing away and *clubbing* with the claws/teeth/feet/tentacles, etc. and the +1S attacks represent a special *crush/pinch* attack with the claws.

2/ Absolutely. Cheaper than buying more arms to make into Great Claws, but less useful against anything that ignores poison.

3/ Your first two normal arms are taken up with either a Spear or DHW. The third arm has the single-handed weapon of your choice. The fourth arm has your dagger (preferably Gromril). The fifth arm has a shield. If you have the skill that lets you use any melee weapons then you can perhaps get Weeping Blades or some other weapon pair for arms three and four, the dagger to your fifth arm, and the shield to your sixth arm. Six arms is probably enough to be going on with.

Then get Spines and as many Scorpion Tails and Tentacles* as you can afford.

*Each Tentacle will, of course, need an arm purchased for it to be legal. On the plus-side you will still get the +1A for each arm.

Thanks alot for your expertise O, and sorry for the late reply.
So the supermutant with four swords is a no go, Sad to hear, Would've been a fun modelling project!

Oh I always thought the tentacle would make you loose the +1A from that arm, if you don't, tentacle is just awesome!

Arguably, tentacle does make you loose the extra attack mutants may have from dual wielding if they have just 2 arms, and it makes the model unable to use two handed weapons, halberds... some people may say the mutant is allowed to attack with the tentacle as an extra weapon, but it doesn't make sense to me. It's a mutation oriented to the possessed anyways, since their number of attacks aren't affected from having tentacles and they are more likely to face enemies with multiple attacks. But keep in mind you allways need an arm to add a tentacle, regardless your interpretation of the rule.

Some people like to start with 4 models and underdog to end up having strong mutations, and some others with full 5 heroes and up to 8 or 9 warband size with barebones possessed... I'd said they are both right, it depends how long the campaign will be in my opinion.

This conversion set looks awesome to make a couple of mutants using two of your cultists, and a possessed or two if you own some bits from more bulky models, like orcs, gors or chaos marauders. I want to use it to make a nurgle warband as proxies of Carnival of Chaos:

With the Frostgrave cultists you can make the magister, both mutants, dark souls and brethren. Such an awesome box. Get this conversion set and 5 second hand gors (two of them to convert them into possessed), and you will have a nice complete warband on the cheap.

Yeah Makes sense, It was mostly thought of for the possessed, the tentacles that is.
Those bits looks awesome! I think I've got everything I need though, GW's forsaken box gives you alot of fun pieces, the 40k box of... can't recall their name, CSM-mutants/forsaken? -Gives you even more. Thanks for the advice though. Smile
Still need to figure out a conversion for scorpion tails!

We currently play that the tentacle looses you an attack, since the arm mutated for mutants. Possessed, of course, are unaffected.

Reaper Bones scorpions...

I bought a small Reaper dragon with an odd barbed tail. $3.50 US seems a bit much though.

Well, you can't *start* with it, but you *can* eventually get a mutant with with 4 weeping blades i.e. two pairs of weeping blades.

You could also consider a house rule that two melee weapons of the same type takes up only 1 slot like a brace of pistols or a brace of dueling pistols. Historically this was called a 'case' so you could e.g. take two swords as a Case of Swords for your first slot and then take Case of Swords for your second slot.

Alternatively you could make a house rule that allows mutants with multiple arms to be equipped with one extra melee weapon per extra arm they have.

Sorry, I was getting confused with Possessed. On a Possessed buying an arm and then buying a tentacle would give you +1A and -1 enemy attack. On a mutant RAW you can still hold a weapon in the tentacle and get the constricting attack, but the modelling of that looks kinda silly.

My group is pretty strict on WYSIWYG and mutants get kinda short-changed so we made a house rule that on a mutant a tentacle can -1 attack and make a single offhand attack at basic S with no special rules due to constricting/twising/yanking/etc.

I do not play Possessed myself, only against them, and I don't consider the rule to reduce my fun at all. YMMV.

Oh yeah, for Scorpion Tails they don't really necessarily have to be *tails* per se. For example, on the image below, I have seen both the first mutation in the top row and the first mutation in the bottom row both painted up to be a poisonous attack* at S5 and S2 if immune to poison. I have seen them coming out of the head, from under arms, and from the torso. They don't *have* to come out of the butt unless you are playing with a *super* pedantic group. And that is coming from someone who plays with power-gamers that are also follow WYSIWYG pretty closely.

*I.E. toxic-looking dripping stuff. Sometimes with PVA or something drooling off and painted or something, sometimes not.

We had the same problem until we started ordering our stuff through a store already dealing with Reapermini; I'd definitely recommend seeing if you can find one who does that and have them order for you.

We've had a similar discussion about extra arms and tail fighting in our group. We chose to allow each extra arm/tail to be equipped with one extra melee weapon. I chose not to let a warrior with four arms shoot two bows though. Rolling Eyes

Thank you all for the great input!
I think I'm gonna start modelling some mutants/possessed, I guess I need a few to keep em WYSIWYG. Very Happy
I heard with my group and they allowed 1weapon in each hand, so that feels good!
