Hey all,

(Firstly, I apologise if this topic is in the wrong place)

I am beginning to notice various models throughout the forum that are *gasp* not GW products!
This has peaked my interest and i've started to look at other miniatures companies.
My problem is that I have no idea on the quality/ease of assembly/value of these other companies.

I'd assume that there are plenty of people who frequent the forum who have at least encountered some decent miniature companies.

These are the ones that have caught my interest so far:

Anima - (http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/anima-tactics-miniatures.asp)
Avatars of War - (http://www.avatars-of-war.com)
Carnevale - (http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/carnevale-miniatures-game.asp)
Discworld - (http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/discworld-miniatures.asp)
Enigma - (http://www.enigmaminiatures.com/)
Freebooter - (http://www.freebooterminiatures.de/en)
Hell Dorado - (http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/hell-dorado.asp)
Malifaux - (http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/malifaux-miniatures.asp)
Scibor - (http://sciborminiatures.com/)
Otherworld - (http://otherworldminiatures.co.uk)

Most of them are 28-32mm, is 32mm too big for games of Mordheim (ie alongside GW stuff)?
I really have no idea where to begin so any feedback/reviews on the list above (or any other company) would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers guys.

Likes & dislikes as to mini-makers is pretty much a personal thing...name your own poison. As to compatibility, check out the Scale-O-Matic Thread on L.A.F.:

http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=10500.0

Just browse through until you find the manufacturer of your choice. What a Face

The following should fit well with GW stuff: Avatars of War, Freebooter, Scibor
These are sometimes a little bigger, but work well most of the time: Hell Dorado, Malifaux
The others I have no experience with, but I would like to recommend Reaper miniatures, well stocked with lots of reasonably priced diverse minis that fit well with GW-stuff.

As I understand it, you've been putting models together and painting them for some time now Wink
What would you go for? And any particular reasons why?

Just checking out their website now. Already seeing some things that look sweet. Cheers for giving me an idea on sizes.

They certainly are! Do you have any of them and what are they like to build and paint?

Avatars of War (AoW) are actually much bigger than GW figures (at least all the dwarves are).

I like Privateer press (PP), thier ranges (Warmachine, Hordea, Iron Kingdoms) are primarily 30-32mm so generally too big for mixing with GW figures though (hence why most of my GW conversions have been made taller to fit with the PP models I will be using). Plenty of nice monsters that really don't conform to scale though.

Red box games (RBG) are utterly brilliant figures with class, top notch sculpting... but they are true 28mm, and therefore too small to mix with GW figures.

Reaper miniatures (Reaper) are scaled all over the place, so you really need to find a comparison shot or ask someone before buying a particular mini, their range is also hit and miss, but most of the "Warlord" line is pretty great. I particularily like thier "Reptus" (lizardmen)... but not the snake part of that faction....
Thier dwarves are horendously varied from tiny to massive, and generally pretty "soft" on the sculpting, though there are plenty of REALLY nice dwarves in thier range.

The "Alkemy" range of figures has some lovely sculpts in it too.

The Nemesis range has some great sculpts if you want to run a peter pan warband or thier religious one is pretty good, the others are..... ok...

If you are after pirates don't forget Ron and bones from Tale of war (though I think again these are 30-32mm, so they'd fit great with PP Press gangers or Sea dogs)

Hmmm...

There are a lot more of these places than I first thought. (I know I know, I'm a noob Razz)

Good thing i've got a free morning tomorrow for web surfing. Smile

Cheers for all the size comparisons guys, that's my biggest concern.
My second biggest concern is faces. I've seen a lot of models with weird faces. I know that might sound strange but it does worry me a little.

I don't want a warband that look like they've been stood on. :s

As i generally prefer plastic mini's for Mordheim (and in general) do to the easy conversion and kit-bashing opportunities I've been "test buying" various boxes to have a look at alternate plastic sets.

I've been very happy with Perry. The Medieval infantry (mercenaries/War of the Roses) boxes along with their loose sprues rocks my bitz-box to a new level Very Happy

I'm awaiting plastic boxes from Warlord and Wargames factory as well as the plastic Dwarfs from Avatars of warlater today (Yay!)

I found a good way to browse miniatures is visiting Wayland or similar sites and look around.

I also have a collection of links on my Blog to sites I've used and like Smile

Good luck

Agree with Sronzo about plastics, but that does limit my selections. The Avatars of War are a great alternative to GW, and though their products are still limited, they are a growing company. I'm looking forward to other plastic kits from them in the future.

Sorry to be a party pooper, RobinTrevize, but I noticed that you put some links to Arcane Miniatures.

I had a nasty experience with the guy from that online shop (ordered something that didn't arrive, sent him several emails with no reply and no money back). This was in early 2010; I've read that he is still treating clients like this in 2012.

So I would not advise anyone to shop from him.

These days I do business with Maelstrom Games and Wayland Games and they are super reliable and friendly.

sorry to burst your bubble but this is unlikely to happen, they have an indigogo project right now to raise funds to do an entire dwarf army, but they are doing it in "warcast" (plastic resin) not plastic. Reason being is that it's about 20% of the cost (50k per plastic kit).

I woulde't be supprised if they do more plastics in future, but I think they expected the beserkers to sell better than they have done...
