Is it assumed that the only reason you can't parry a 6 is because you can't roll HIGHER than six? Let's say I have a a home-brew item that gives me a +1 to any roll. Could I parry a 6 with a roll of 7?

Sounds like a house rule call to me. Remember though that some warbands like the Dwarf Treasure Hunters do have the ability to parry on a matching roll, so then a 6 could be parried by another 6. The vanilla rules do state that the parry roll much exceed the attack roll, so if everyone agrees on your house rule, then yes, I'd say that an attack roll of 6 could be parried.

I can't find that treasure-hunter ability, but I would love to know where it's at.

I just noticed that two swords get a +1 to parry, but they still aren't allowed to parry a 6 with a roll of 7. That seems pretty cut and dry.

Lost me again. Most house rules about 2 swords and parrying just allow a re-roll.

@scoates... I wonder whether this is another deviation in the Mordheim Rulebook 2.1 that you've been reading. I recommend using the official Mordheim rules available for free on the Games Workshop website rather than those obscure, unofficial rules.

If my rules are unofficial, it is a surprise to me.

http://home.deds.nl/~mordheim/MordheimRulebook.pdf

Here is my source. Look under the Parry section.

As with another question I've posted, if I find out this PDF is unofficial, it will be an interesting development.

That PDF matches neither my hardcopy nor my downloaded PDF. That PFD looks like it has been processed by that Paul H guy to remove all the furniture pics of the original (leaving just the rules) and then tweaked them. That +1 parry for two swords, the alignment system, a number of the weapons, they are all either added from official addons or taken from unofficial sources. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few other rules tweaks buried in there somewhere too.

In any case you don't need a home-brew item of any kind to get a +1 to hit, a diving charge will give you +1 to hit (and +1S) in the base rules and in my group we have always allowed that to add to one's roll to parry. Doesn't seem to have unbalanced anything and it makes swords marginally more desirable. As has been already mentioned it is probably something you will need to house-rule. I don't think there was ever any official FAQ or anything on what happens.

The official rules are available again from Games Workshops website. The lack of copyright information, illustration and the font should be dead giveaways that this document is not published by GW (as well as the breadth of rules). Smile

That said this particular document has been causing trouble in my local campaign because it pops up in google searches as Mordheim rules.

Also this is the old version of this document. A newer version is available.

I think by "+1 Parry", rather than "+1 to Parry", it refers to making 2 parry attempts rather than a bonus to the parry roll. This likely is what is causing the issue, though I believe that only a buckler/sword combination allows the second parry attempt. Either way, I checked out that link, and like VK stated, the document is not the same as the GW book. It's a great source though, with all 300+ pages of material!

Sword and buckler allow a reroll on the parry attempt, and its always aginst the highest dice.

The official rules says:

Bucklers are small shields which offer no increase to the armour saving throw, but allow you to parry attacks. Swords are also used to parry enemy attacks. When an opponent scores a hit, warriors equipped with bucklers or swords may try to parry the blow. Roll a D6. If the score is higher than the number your opponent rolled to hit, the buckler or sword has parried the strike. Note that it is therefore impossible to parry a blow which scored a 6 on the roll to hit.
A buckler or sword may only parry one blow per hand-to-hand combat phase. A parried blow is ignored and has no effect. If your opponent scored several hits, you will have to try to beat the highest score (if the highest score is a 6, you automatically lose the chance of parrying that opponent’s attacks). If a model is fighting against several opponents, it may only parry the strike from the enemy who makes the first hit(s) (ie, the attacking model with the highest Initiative). In the case of equal Initiative characteristics roll a dice to decide who strikes first. If your model is armed with a buckler and a sword, you may re-roll any failed parries once. A model armed with two swords can still only roll once. A model may not parry attacks made with twice (or more) his own basic Strength – they are simply too powerful to be stopped.

- Mordheim, Games Workshop, 2005

In my group we have house ruled bucklers to also parry successfully if they can match the opponents score, as no one used them before Smile
