I just think back to the time that we played a couple games against another gaming group that we invited over. I was surprised by the lack of boxes or carrying cases when they arrived and wondered where their models were. We were playing Warhammer (5th ed., in case you were curious) and they removed a couple of notebooks of graph paper that had the "footprint" of their units drawn on it. Asking for some scissors, they began cutting their army out. The ensuing battle was incredibly frustrating as our carefully built (but not fully-painted) armies waged war against flat white squares with scribbled labels. Determining line of sight and cover was nightmarish, knowing exactly what was what was difficult, and the feel of the game went completely down the toilet. Painted armies enhance the game significantly - and I've found folks with painted armies tend to be more sporting players (that's just my experience, though).

I also have WAY too many projects going on, so if I don't feel like painting or modeling one thing, there's always something on my desk that catches my eye.

Places like this!

One of the main reasons I joined Tom's in the first place was so I had some inspiration and some motivation. Nobody paints slower than I do, fact. Though seeing all these talented and diverse methods and results makes me want to finish my own.

Sit down with the tools lain out slap on some good background music and take it step by step.

I really don't enjoy playing with unpainted models, so I guess its a mix of really wanting to play my new warbands and not wanting to play them unpainted...

Extra free tip/trick.

Make sure you don't have to reassamble your working space everytime you decide you want to paint. If it takes you 10 minutes to set everything up in the first place, the motivation to "just paint for a couple of minutes" will be completely gone!

So, if possible, dedicate some part of a room to painting corner that is always ready to step in to.

I find that leagues and escalations can really get the painting juices going. Find a couple other players, and agree to paint a certain amount every month. For Mordheim this could be 3 figures for instance. Then, at the end of every deadline play a game with all the involved players. I participated in a fantasy escalation league a few years back and it ended up with me having a fully painted warriors of chaos army.

For me it is the desire to NOT be THAT GUY.

The last time I played in an organized tournament was in 2003 Grand Tournament, I was playing 40k then but the store is true for all games.

Any ways, I ended up having to play against an Imperial Guard player, but unfortunately this guy had NONE of his army painted. I would kill 3 guys in a unit thinking I had killed enough to cause a route test, and this guy would shoot back with ..oh no ..you only killed 2 from this unit and 1 from that unit! I was like how the hell can you tell they are freaking painted....

In short, worst game I ever played, most frustrating game ever! I voed from that day, I would never be that guy!

Also, one MAJOR thing for me that really really helps with staying motivated, is a clean and dedicated work space. This is a hobby that should help you relax, and not give you anxiety when you look at your dirty table.

Having all my supplies where I can reach them, and plenty of room to work make it much easier to sit down and paint for a few hours vs. having to pull out all your supplies and set up, knowing that you have to clean up when you are done.

Also, also. Pulling out all your figures in a unit that need to be painted can be intimidating try working on 1-3 minis at a time so you can see results sometimes helps me.

I am lazy with my paintworks too but I try to spare some time every week for my minis, maybe 3-4 hours make it.
I do not have a "corner workspace" and I always have to pull things out of the closet to start painting.
To start motivation I leave the box I've just bought in a place where I see it while Im in my room. Then, I start thinking everyday "I should start" until I finally do it. When I have assembled all the models, I leave them unpainted on my "Important things" shelf. Then, after some days watching them unpainted, I remind I have to continue my hobby WIP. Later on, I prime them and then the process begins again (leaving them on the shelf, reminding myself I have a hobby, etc).

I highly recommend you to start with all the henchmen at a time, painting the same things they're wearing on the same colour (for example, painting only the belts with a brown colour). When a first complete layer of colour is done in every mini, I start shading them (always by parts) and when I am done with shading I start lighting (same process).
Then, I finish painting the fine detail and voilá, two afternoons (3-4h total) for painting 5 henchmen, and that is a lot for Mordheim... And when you're done with all henchmen, or if you get bored in between, you can paint your heroes (for these I strongly recommend painting them 1 by 1).

That would mean that maybe a month after buying the minis you can play them and be satisfied of your work.
As long as you organize yourself and stop postponing WIPs, you will find very soon you have a great number of minis painted, and your paintwork will be improving day by day.

And remember, if you're going to play with them it doesn't mind if they're not perfect, they're "tabletop quality" and as long as you won't use paperhammer every paintwork is worthy and respectable.

I get a lot of motivation from having a specific goal for when the army / warband / model is due, and then use a tick list (a list of tasks that can be checked off when completed) to make it very obvious that I'm making progress on my project.

Being geeky, I also wrote a page for managing projects.

I also agree fully about having a designated painting and modelling section to ensure you can sit down and paint for 15 minutes without a 10 minute overhead unpacking and repacking everything.

Personally I have all my stuff in a computer cabinet, like the one seen below:

Motivating yourself to Paint/Assemble? 24ff0249c6de658c

This works wonders as I can have all my stuff in one place, and when I'm done I can just close the doors and walk away. At the same time, my girlfriend doesn't have to worry about the mess if we're having guests over!

I find that playing consistently is a great way to get motivated!
Every time I play a game of Warhammer Fantasy I think, "Damn. Next time I'm gonna finish painting these [blah] units." If I end up planning another battle in one or two weeks, I actually get motivated to finish some stuff up!

I used to have TONS of unpainted and unassemlbed models for like 10+ years, and played constantly with unpainted minis. It was frustrating, but the group I played with was only able to get together (or, more like get their act together) like three or four times a year. I didn't want to join a store league because I felt embarrassed with so many unpainted minis. In short, not too much playing gave me little motiviation to actually paint.

Then in early 2009 I found out a good friend of mine also had a Warhammer army and wanted to play! We pretty well played (on average) every second or third week in 2009, and we're continuing that into 2010. Since January 2009 I have painted about 2000 points worth of my Orcs and Goblins, finished assembling and priming many more, completely assembled my Empire army (1500 points) and am well on my way to painting more and more units of Orcs and Gobbos!!

So, in summary: Play often! Smile

I can not agree more with this sentiment. My wife is a complete "clean freak" and she does not care for my hobbies in the least. Every time I have to put a coat of paint on something, I have to start over from scratch. There will soon be a work area in my garage that will be uninterrupted but I live in Canada so it is not conducive to storing paints outside in the winter months.

I used to paint like a fiend and was totally embarrassed to put an unpainted model on a table. In those days, GW would not allow you to put any unbased or unpainted models on the table, anyway. Now, some tournaments even allow unpainted armies. Things are getting out of hand. While I don't mind proxies for testing. Come gaming night, bring some painted minis.

My real motivation: I'm an infrequent tournament player. I want to be at the top of the rankings and you CAN NOT get there without decent painting scores.

While I'm not quite as hard-core as SiliconSicilian (around these parts, I'd have no opponents if I was), I do feel that fielding painted models is much preferred and that you should make every effort to do so. My wife is much like yours, it seems, and cares very little for my "nerding". Our solution was an old secretary desk with a door on front that folds out to make the "table part" of the desk. When I'm done, I just close it and nobody's the wiser. I imagine an old roll-top would also do the trick.

And playing REALLY does it! I hadn't played for quite some time until today, and it has really got me wanting to get some more models painted up (and build more scenery as well)! Nothing like a close-fought battle to get you motivated - the Skaven scum will fall to sling stones and hammer blows (and they'll be PAINTED - well, maybe not the sling stones...)!

I may have come off a bit harsh. What I meant was... I understand how others get in a funk and can't find time or motivation for painting. So now, I'm a lot more relaxed towards seeing unpainted minis. Hell, GW doesn't care so why should I. However, tournaments are a different breed and I just feel that some effort should be made there.

My newest gaming group has a lot of very skilled painters... probably put me to shame if they gave it their all. Lately, we have been playtesting some different armies and so some mid-progress conversions have hit the table as well as freshly assembled units. This used to bother me a lot. Now, I know that the painting will get done. The motivation comes (as Cygnus has pointed out) through rolling dice.

I find that if you are using a painted army more people stop and ask you about it and you tend to have a better time. also painted units seem more lucky but it might just be that you look after them more.

Although I am not terribly superstitious, I can vouch that my painted units have never been beaten by unpainted ones. Maybe there is something to this or maybe I just use better tactics subconsciously when playing against a non-pretty unit.

Should be. I always loved the BFG rule that unpainted models had -1 LD. LD is a huge part of BFG so it is a good motivation to finish your stuff. Hatred versus unpainted models is fair for Warhammer.

I do everything in steps. So when I am in a cutting mood I will cut my mini's out of their sprues, and trim any flash. When I am in an assembling mood I will assemble. Basically I have mini's at everything stage of the process, so if I am not in the mood to paint I can still prime, or trim.

The other thing is that I try to set goals. I think hey Tallahassee's Mordheim Monday is starting-up on May 17th. What models will I need? and what would be a realistic time line to get everything painted?

I have 2 weeks, and I will need 15 to 20 models so that is 7 to 10 models a week. Right now I have my starting warband assembled, I just need to prime them.

I ask myself what do I need to do to get playable models, ones that look good enough that I don't feel like I am that guy pushing plastic around on the table while everyone else is playing with painted models. Then as time goes on I do touch-up and make everything look good.

In our Mordheim "Lodge", we only gets to have a game session once a month, because of work/kids/bands etc. Thats my motivation! When we finally get to meet each other, having fun, drinking, beers/smoking [w..d], roling dices and being MEN (?), then I think that my warband have to look cool, well painted at least. We have such a awesome gameboard, and when just one mini is sticking out, the whole illusion goes out in the drain.

But yes sometimes it IS a pain in the ass, paiinting a whole new warband, knowing that it has to be done in a week... BUT THEN!!!
At my web-library i can rent/download podcast for free. I've been doing RPG's for 21 years now and haven't read LOTR yet... Here's my chace to "read" it AND painting my minis at the same time!!! Doing two things at once, makes painting fun!!! Wink

Posting photos of your WIP & finished pieces is a TREMENDOUS motivator. I don't really have the ability to post stuff, but I've found from those occasions that I managed it that the feedback/compliments I've received have pushed me to EVEN GREAT efforts...crazy efforts but greater nonetheless. Keeping a log would be a valuable tool to aid in your work. Motivating yourself to Paint/Assemble? Fresse

This guy named Scott Goldstein used to come in to my game store every month or so. You guys may not know him, but he's been featured in white dwarf a few times in the past, most notably for his dark elf army. He's a really fantastic painter, and to date I've seen him with three fully painted warhammer armies, all resplendent with tons of freehand and conversion work. When I grilled him about how he gets it all done, and to such a high standard, his big tip was that he NEVER just watches television. Any time he's in front of the TV, he's painting. Talk about a good way to get some miniatures finished Wink
