As I'm planning my warbands, I'm curious on how many figures I should acquire. The general consensus seems to be if you're going to take a monster, to take it in the beginning otherwise you'll never save the GC to get one during the campaign.

I just recently got some Beastmen and because this is my 3rd warband (my first is almost finished), I don't want to invest too heavily to complete it. I know for sure I want to take a Minotaur.. but how many other random Gors you think I should get?

Sorry, this is all still kinda new to me cause I'm just used to set, pitched battles from Warhammer.

I usually take as many as I can get my hands on. If you play more than 3-4 games you should be able to bank enough for a monster if you save up. It is much easier to win and get more money with more models earlier in the game, at least from my experience. My advice to you is that if you take the Minotaur, spend very minimally on equipment, max out on heroes, and take as many of your cheapest remaining models as your rules and remaining cash allow.

How many models did you get and what do they represent? Gors, Ungors or Bestigors? An effective warband usually has five heroes (six later) maybe two hounds and the rest (3-5) is gors. The Mino is optional, but okay. Very vew use Ungors. In the end, you will probably have six heroes, 1-2 hounds, a Mino and 4-3 gors (you have a max of 12 models). So if you happen to have a couple of models that work as gors already, you might want to get a box of 10 Bestigors for heroes (you got minis left over, but still cheaper than buying only six metal Bestigors AND, very importantly, you have models spare if you wish to swap equipment on your heroes. Gors work best with two clubs, if efficiency is what you are after). If you have a few hero-material minis already, you will want the box of ten gors and maybe pimp 1-2 for heroes.
Nice Minotaur-Minis come from Avatars of War or Scibor imo. Around 20-25 Euros, but still cheaper than 35 for three GW-Minos or 32 for the Doombull (the old single Mino by GW for 22 is ugly imo). Or you get one less impressive but nevertheless nice mino for around 12 from Reaper. Or just use a totally different model you like...
BTW I'd start without a Mino in the beginning, max out on Gors (- the hounds, which are essential) to have a better chance on getting a sixth strong hero. This one will generate more income which will make a Mino quite likely later) On the other hand a Mino is not that strong anymore if you get him mid-campaign, so this decision is up to you...

My copy of the warband says the max number of models is 15.

Gorenut@I think you are asking for a total number for a warband? I have a huge collection of miniatures so I never think about that question.

I think the maximum size of the warband is 15. Seveal items of equipment can add numbers to your warband so you can possibly have 17-18 depending on the rules you play with. As Grimscull notes you need 5-6 hero models. You can have a total of 5 gors, 1 minotaur, some hounds (which become less useful later in the campaign) and some ungors. Comfortable numbers would be 5 hounds and 5 ungors.

Some folks just pant up enough figures to make the maximum size and live with that. I like to have replacements for characters that are killed, different weapon options and stuff like that so I like lots of minis to chose from.

For a 15 model warband I will tend to have about 25 models. 6 starting heroes, 6 fully-kitted heroes, and then 10-15 henchmen of various weapon levels.

Really?

Personally, I only ever have one model for each hero. But then, my friends and I let each other use armoured models even if we can't afford the armour yet. They just don't get the save until they've paid for the armour. And armour is about the only thing aside from weapon material upgrades that I add on to a hero after warband creation.

I do that too - I very rarely swap a model, even if the campaign changes them (lost limbs or new equipment for example!)

I tend to make plenty of spare models for the warband though - Orcs and Goblins have a max size of 20 but most of my warbands have about 30 models painted.

Well, my Carnival of Chaos consists of the Carnival Master, 2 Brutes, 2 Plaguebearers, a Tainted One and 9 Nurglings. But I have over 20 Nurglings painted, if we ever run an Escalation campaign (without Warband Size Limit).

I don't have different models for the same hero, though. My Carnival Master always carries a sword in his right hand and stretches out his left to do his magic shtick. I'm not too keen on having to convert yet another Carnival Master just because he, for example, lost an eye or found a pistol or whatever.

Not because of the financial ramifications, but because I usually paint my warband "in one swoop", so to speak, to maintain some consistent overall look. If I had to, let's say, paint and convert another Carnival Master after three or four months because of his progress, he would always stick out of the crowd, ruining the overall look.

Ha! Jumped in halfway through the post, and almost thought that your warband itself had 6 starting heroes and 6 add on heroes for a total of 12. Started to write a correction before I realized you meant models.

So I decided to leave the flaming comment blank, rather than fill it in:

Dear _________

You are obviously wrong about _______ , as you forgot to take in account _____________, ______, and of course, ____________, as everybody knows. I did not read over 30% of your post, but even without doing so, I feel secure saying that if people played it your way, the results would be broken and ____ (insert negative adjective ____ . I know that Mordheim has not had an official rules review for over __(insert insane amount of time),___, which means that it is up to me to make sure that people like you don't ruin it for be the rest of us. You are what's wrong with your/this country.

Oh, and lern to spell.

Sincerely,
___(insert anonymous name that you hide behind)____

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the input guys.. so most of you eventually hit your max warband size?

I guess thats what I was really wondering.. if the average campaign even hits near that... then again.. i guess with Mordheim, there really isn't a real hard rule since there can always be mutually agreed upon GC additions, etc.

PS: The Avatars of War Minotaur is pretty much what even made me think of collecting Beastmen. Minotaurs have always ranked as one of my fave mythological creatures.. but GW (along with many other makers) always made ugly ones (not in a good way). Thankfully (or not, if you ask my wallet/time) Avatars of War came out with a respectable one. Ideally, I'd really want one from Ilyiad, but they're downright impossible to come by.
