Contemplating trying it for the witch hunter lists. That way you could afford pistols, armour and other stuff to really kit them out. I may bring along some warhounds but other than that no henchmen!

Anybody done it with this or other lists?

I mentioned one on the "Spyre Hunter equivalent in Mordheim" thread...

Zelophahad has just started using a Black Orc warband (from the Nemesis Crown campaign pack). His starter warband has just 5 Heroes and no Henchmen (Boss, 2 Black Orcs, 2 Young'Unz) with loads of heavy armour, shields, a two-handed weapon (or two) and a few helmets.

They beat the snot out of my starter Orc and Goblin warband this week - I just couldn't injure any of them!

I woudn't consider five WH-Heroes plus dogs a hero-only warband since dogs are rather strong henchmen in the beginning Wink

I tried it with shadow-elves once (because there were exactly five Reaper-models I liked) and it was mediocre I'd say. The main problem was that you either win or have to rout after two losses with only three exploration-dice left (you lose two heroes). The other thing is that you woun't get a Lad/ sixth hero which is a disadvantage in the long run.

That said, it might work fine for Possessed, the mentioned Blackorks and Dwarfs, cause they are hard to kill, have good stats and good and expensive gear.
Now I come to think of it I once playes Beastmen where I at some point didn't rebuy henchmen, leaving me with six heroes and two dogs. They were tough as nails. It just woun't pay to start like that because beastmen don't have very good gear and gor-henchmen with two clubs are ace in the beginning.

No. With some of the warbands where the models are very expensive (Dwarves, elf variants) I have sometimes started with only one or two henchmen, but never none.

Twice I have seen people use that tactic with the Possessed, in order to add lots of mutations. In both cases the warbands were soon dropped from the campaign as embarrassing failures.

Grimscull nicely sums up the flaws with the idea. It can work, if you are lucky in the first couple of games, but it is not a particularly sound strategy, I don't think (although again, I have not seen it tried much).

I have played (and currently am), a warband with no Henchmen, my Possessed.

They started out as failerues the first two battles, but after a couple of Underdog games I got some levels and I started to kick in.

I've been lucky with getting high Toughness, plenty of Wounds, Dodge and all kind of deadly stuff, both my mutants and my Magister has become Possessed by Daemons as well!

For about 8 weeks I've played my Possessed with only the Magister and my two Possessed, and added the mutants lately. After they became Possessed I had to get one henchman though, but for a short while.

I got a magical artifact the other day (the quite deadly dagger), and since none of my possessed or possessed mutants and magister can carry any weapons other than daemonic weapons i had to try to get myself someone with 'that lad got talent', which I managed to on his first level, so now I have a Beastman with the deadly knife and 6 heroes in total in my Warband.
