PostSubject: Cue Psychotic Rant   Cue Psychotic Rant Icon_minitimeSun 10 Jul 2011 - 22:32

As some of you have known, I've been working on a "Storm of Magic" themed Mord setting. As soon as it was done, I was hoping to run it with my local gaming group.

What most of you DON'T know is that my local group has pretty much fallen apart. 4 years ago, I was the junior member... by default, I'm the head of the group, solely because everyone who was there before has either moved or been previously engaged, many of them for years now.

So, my new apartment is about the same distance from my old game store (an Indy), but also much closer to GW store. Out of curiosity, I thought I'd stop in to see:

a. If they still ran Mordheim games (someone had mentioned they had)
b. Whether I can tempt them with running the Storm of Magic tie-in, jut for fun.

I was surprised that A was still true... two people were running a Sisters vs. Witch Hunter game as I came in. They were busy, so I killed time talking to one of the Clerks.

Me: I was asking about Storm of Magic earlier partially because I think it'd be fun to make a SoM themed Mordheim campaign.

Clerk: Eh, I don't think it would work.

Me: Don't see why not, a lot of scenarios are 'king of the hill' based. I think it could be fun.

Clerk: Naw, 'cause when you throw in too many things, it just gets silly. That's why we here at the store stick with only the core rulebook rules.

Me: Wha? Not even the Town Cryers?

Clerk: [Proudly] Nope.

Me; Why not?

Clerk: 'Cause they were written by an outside source. And they're really not balanced. Well, the Dwarves are okay... and the Carnival of Chaos. But, I mean, look at the Shadow Elves, they're terrible.

I politely nodded... and go the hell out of there.

Did I expect them to immediately sweep up my "Storm of Magic" idea and make it famous throughout the gaming world? Hell no. Even if they listened to my pitch and said no to a "store only" campaign, I wouldn't be terribly surprised.

The terror comes from the fact that, by DEFAULT, their reaction to any new rule or addition was "no." I didn't even PROPOSE the new rules yet, yet I already knew the answer. The policy, the set in stone TENET was "nothing fan-based."

*old man voice* I remember when Games Workshop not only enjoyed fan-based rules, they had a PUBLICATION for it. They remembered who the game was for- the people who played it. I mean, I understand about purity of brand and copyright and all that rot. But it's almost like the GW company has ironically become the extremist Inquisitors they sell. Corruption? Cleanse it. Change? Stop it. Original thought? Heresy.

If I wanted to play a game over and over without variation, I'd buy a videogame. As most of you know by now, I create first and game second. If I took a "which Chaos God are you?" test, I'd be Tzeentch- I live for change. Stagnation = death.

Of course, I understand that some people like to ensure balance. I get that it might have been that one store, and nothing like the next store. I get it. But it still frustrates me.

Note: I don't really expect a response per se. I'm not trying to incite a revolt to burn them down.... I just need to rant a little. [/rant]

The attitude displayed by people like this store, and the concept of tournament wargaming, is what scares me from playing with pretty much anyone except Mrs 5Pointer and one friend from back in high school (we used to write house rules for Warhammer Quest back then!). (well that and being rather shy!)

It's just so hard to find people who play just for *shock, horror* fun!

This is actually why I quit out of GW games for the best part of a decade and moved to RPGs, the creative process - painting, converting, fluff, rules writing - is what brought me back.

Thanks for letting me piggy-back a spleen-vent of my own Smile

I always have seen GW more as Tech-Priests than inquisitors. Nothing new! Unless we say it is ok of course...

Just seems to fit well. I miss 2nd edition of warhammer 40K. Squig Catapults anyone? Pulsa Rokkit? Smoke Grenades? THROWING a grenade even? 2 dice armor save for terminator armor? Fluff reasons for game mechanics (virus grenades, etc.)

I have spent so much money on 40K and WFB stuff, but have gotten much more enjoyment out of Mordheim due to the simple fact of funness. (Funness is now a term, so Newspaper whack to you people who care about proper grammer!) Funness is the most important quality in a game. I can handle a totally unfair game, as long as it is fun for both sides.

I guess I can understand that balance and tourneys sell product better than a silly game would. But I feel as it the spirit of the game is fading out of GW.

My previous local GW store didn't allow Mordheim games at all.
I've only visited and asked one of the ? stores here in Berlin and there it was the same. Crying or Very sad

I really like going into GW stores and have them ask me what I play... When I say Mordheim and they ask what warband, it's always the same: "Currently I'm working on a fully magnetized Marauders of Chaos warband" "Oh, you mean Cult of the Possessed?" "No, like, Marauders... there's been some development."

It's a pity that most of them don't even know of Nemesis Crown or Relics of the Crusade... after all, it's their job and Mordheim is still a GW game. But hearing that some stores don't even allow it more, I guess GW might be a little afraid that their upscaling process of all the games (now they even invented a good reason to sell more of their terrain) could get too much competition from an awesome and fun game like Mordheim...

Well, to answer your questions first:
Quote :
a. If they still ran Mordheim games (someone had mentioned they had)
Seems like this just depends on the store in question.

Quote :
b. Whether I can tempt them with running the Storm of Magic tie-in, jut for fun.
I'd say definitely, at least it seems to me like it might be worth a shot asking. If they have Mordheim players at all then they're already much more open to thinking outside the box than most GW stores. It sounds like the main problems they ran into over there is that there was some pretty unbalance stuff in TC back in the day, and they decided then and there to just stick to the original releases without realizing how much has happened since.

They may not go for a full-blown fan-made supplement with new warbands, hired swords, exploration charts, scenarios, etc. - the whole nine yards - but I think there's a fair chance they'd be open to a normal Mordheim campaign with a couple of added Storm of Magic elements.

For example - the Wizard's mansion is already a written scenario (taken from White Dwarf, I believe, so I would think they'd allow it as pretty balanced). You could replace the monsters in the Monster Hunt scenario with some from the new SoM supplement as well. Perhaps they'd be OK letting each warband start with a Warlock hired sword, and include the various colleges/lores of magic from warhammer to add a bit of variety. Maybe toss in a magical artifact or two along the way as rewards for certain scenarios.

It probably wouldn't be exactly what you're looking for, but by making a few compromises I bet you could run a decent campaign and have a lot of fun, which is the key really (especially if your previous group has been more-or-less dissolved for 4 years). And who knows, if it goes well it may open their minds up a bit to including stuff other than just the "official" stuff.

"funness" lol!

I agree with you though. I play for the funness of a game regardless of whether it is balanced. My gaming group has enjoyed games of War on Terror the Board Game just because it is so over the top and silly and not because it is necessarily tightly balanced. Playing for fun rather than to win is what I want in my gaming group (although we all still like to win also!!).

We don't have a GW in the little city of Toowoomba (we do have a GW re-seller though). In some of the bigger metropolitan areas nearby there are GW stores and some of them still play Mordheim. Our little gaming group have been invited to trek down and play with them but it has not yet been possible. Sad I would LOVE to organise a mini-tournament for Mordheim in South-East Queensland and meet up with some other Mordheim gamers that live close(-ish) by.

@Eliazar... I really like going into a GW store and have them ask me what I play... When I say Mordheim and then they stare at me blankly. Well not really... Neutral rather I feel sad that they don't know what a great game is out there unplayed.

A fair attempt at compromise, but I get the impression (that at least with that guy), they controlled what their players played. Even from the other side of the room. A bit of a smug, "core rules or you're out."

I was ready to punch him when he said "Dwarves are okay..." They should be, they showed up in White Dwarf. ( I paid good money for that magazine, back in the day.)

Lemming: Well, I used to get warm smiles... and then the store moved down the street. Maybe the cool guys who worked there were canned or just off shift that day. (Although, I was probably talking to a manager or assistant m.)

...OR get one of those Craft Fair style tents & set up a game in front of/across the street from their store...sort of a hobby-based sit-in. Suspect

ha, how lovely, after this threat, I decided to drop by my local GW, it was on the way home anyway, and what do you know, they're hosting a Specialists game series this summer, so mordheim will be heavily played he assured me.
I go: oh, really? you got a bunch of players here?
the guy: no but I know some play, and they're likely to turn up...
Me: right, so nothing's for sure then?, do you have scenery for mordheim, do you allow new warbands? like the newer supplements?
guy: No, we play on regular boards, with some more plastic closed buildings on it... and we use the rules from GW site, probably, we don't really know what we're gonna do actually... but hey, you're an avid player right? maybe if you bring a couple of warbands, some folk will play with you?
Me, right, so you don't really have anything, nor have you any expectations? that's just great...
I'll take my magic cards and be on my way then... thank you...

sigh...

Hehe, nothing beats a cool Reiklander stand-off with 10 bows and no terrain Very Happy Way to go to revive the game. But if they're not having any terrain and only standard warbands, perhaps I should drop by with the Hung and their warhounds and hunt them down Very Happy

Sti'll I'd love to see you standing lonely in the GW with a couple of warbands waiting for some kids to play with you Very Happy

hahaha, yeah lovely, the general GW type kids? sweaty, over enthousiast, and rather clumsy? no thanks, I prefer my models in one piece... but I might attend, just so I can scare the crap out of them... yeah, you lost control of this game, it's ours now! maybe we could interest you in some serious rules and nice fanbase? here's our demands!
