Hey everyone,

We have a player who has hired "the knife" ( and is using him to great effect ) and I was re reading the rules for him today and had a few questions/ clarifications...

hire fee... is this right, can be hired for 70gc or one dose of crimson shade (35 +d6gc)? Or do they mean you can give him one dose insted of an upkeep fee?

he may take crimson shade before the battle...why would you not give it to him? He is allready addicted, is there a downside to him taking it that I have missed? Do you have to buy the drug for him or is it assumed he has a personal supply that he uses?

As I understand it, you can pay with a crimson shade instead of 70 gc.

There is no reason to not give it to him. I guess you could interpret it as that you have to provide it for him but I think that is outside the rules. You can never buy equipment for Hired Swords / DPs unless clearly stated (and this is far from clear).

We actually banned Johann. He is insane at that price. Too bad for such a cool character but we haven't figured out balanced nerfs for him yet.

I second this interpretation - exactly what I think on this matter.
The Crimson Shade in question can substitute for the hire fee, and there are no downsides to or requirements on your part for letting Johann participate in the fight drugged up; the choice is purely there for fluff reasons (although it has very real and game-mechanical consequences, of course Wink), I guess, his being an addict &c.

This also highlights that the real 'problem' lies with the Crimson Shade and its having a purely monetary consequence for its worst side effect (and so many positive effects in the first place), instead of potentially debilitating the user's body like the other drugs do (what is Crimson Shade modelled on, in regard to its real-world parallels, anyway? Crack? Amphetamine?).

But the funniest part about ol' Johnny I find the fact that in the German translation of Mordheim, he is inexplicably, and for no apparent reason (other than maybe sounding more of 'Ye olde tymes'-ish to the relevant translator) renamed from 'Johann' to 'Sigurd'! Yay for complete randomness, or what? Laughing

yep and Mordheim is Mortheim - which makes a bit of sense, cause Mord means murder in german.

Thanks for the response fellas.
I am growing to hate him more and more ( pure envy ). Does anyone have any good anti-Johann tactics? One player in our group has hired the orphan assasins. Any ideas would be most welcome Suspect

Throwing Knives don't have too big a range - ion our recent campaign my Captain and Sergeant regularly just gunned him down before he got in range. Also big bad gribblies can survive the hail of knives usually we found to then go chow down.

He has eagle eyes so has a 12" range (no movement or range mods), BS 6, S 5 (if he takes crimson shade), auto woud on a roll of 6 to hit and can throw six knives if he doesn't move!!! Mad
...and he has dodge. He is a very naughty boy.
I hates him.

I have had experience with Johann the Knife, and have found the best way to take him out of the equation, but you have to be a Skaven to use it. Veskit is great for shredding Johann in hand-to-hand combat (assuming you can make sure you get first hit). Very Happy

Our group however, felt that the DPs unbalanced the game too much!

I have a question about our friend Johann
The 30 gc upkeep fee includes a new portion of crimson shade?

Or
Need to pay the upkeep 30 gc and the crimsom shade?

Or
Give to him more crimson shade and dont pay the 30 gc for upkeep?

Thanks fellas!

I'd say you may pay the unkeep OR give him one portion instead. That may be useful because you found crimsom shade during exploration or have merchant skills and may get crimsom shade cheaper than the actual unkeep rate.

Hiring him for one portion of crimsom shade is cheaper than the actual hiring price. Remember he has access to crimsom shade to consume before any battle regardless you gave him one portion or not.

About using dramatis personae... I agree they are way too good and unbalance the game. But sometimes they may be fun, like allowing a butched warband to hire one of them instead making a new warband in the middle of the campaign, or including them in new custom scenarios. In my group one of the players act as referee, and that kind of role may be interesting to decide when dramatis personae are allowed. That's just an idea, we've never used them that way, but it may be fun.

Well, this week our referee just decided to allow any warband playing against the Undead to hire for free and for one game only Marianna if they roll a 1 in 1d6. It's a countermeasure against a S5 A4 W3 vampire with some nice equipment, who is beating every rival to pulp. Let's see how it works.

Xpain! I have two Venezuelan coworkers tho, so I'm well-versed in arepas and cachapas Wink

Main problem with that vampire is he rolled S and A several times as first advances, and became a wrecking ball pretty soon in the campaign. Now he has 3 wounds and healing herbs... it really is difficult to make a scratch on him with ranged or holy water, and if you charge he will attack first with 4 S5 spear attacks. If he charges you, get ready for a rain of rapier hits. On top of that the usual rabbit foot, lucky charm... pretty nasty.

@bitxo: Now, this will not work wonders, but are you using the alternative critical hit chart? If not, you should. A good fighter or two of yours with a blunt weapon and he will consider charging twice as he risks losing all wounds in one go. Try to get the charge, 4 S5 attacks is better than 4+ S5 attacks raining down on you. Ganging up on him is a no-brainer of course. Shooting will not kill him, but trigger the lucky charm. Small things help.
Sorry for OT.
