While wandering around L.A.F., I came upon a thread claiming confirmation that G.W. is switching to Resin:

http://www.miniwargaming.com/content/confirmed-gw-switching-metal-resin

I would have dismissed this as mere rumor if it wasn't for the mention of a 20% price increase...that just rang so true considering G.W's modus operandi. Suspect
For those interest in following the discussion at L.A.F., here is the link.;

I saw that on Bell of Lost Souls, and GW just announced the finecast resin a few days ago on their website, but without prices. I also read about the May price increase and saw some of the projected prices, and dang, are they expensive! Here are the links: Price Increases and finecast. It's just ridiculous, good thing there is ebay. No way am I paying $41.25 for 10 black orcs.

Why? Does Resin really bring a cost savings? Quality? What? This just ended my Fantasy and 40K career completely. My Orcs and Goblins were already a ton of money to go...

I'll buy an XBox 360 instead...

(Mordheim is even moreso the way to go now)

Yeah, it's definitely confirmed; I have been following it on their forums, unofficial forums and their Facebook pages and it seems like almost no-one is happy. It's officially become a "designer hobby," and not a game.

The prices go up, and it kills the secondary market (unless you can strip paint off resin). Personally, I don't like working with resin (it's really difficult to work with, and paint never seems to stick for me).

Want metal minis for your heroes? I go here:

http://www.avatars-of-war.com/

Some really good stuff, superbly detailed, and priced to sell (and for normal folks to buy). Anyway, I am interested to see how this unfolds.

Hm. "Switching to a designer hobby" doesn't really make sense considering their ordinary sales strategy of selling lots of miniatures to lots of kiids, releasing a new codex and selling new armies to them no matter if the first ones were painted.

However, resin always seemed to be a little on the fragile side, judging from what I bought from Forgeworld and Studio McVey... and super fine cast always seemed more for painters than for players.

Hopefully, this stuff won't sell too well and they will increase their efforts in the all-plastics range like they did with the Empire and OnG armies.

Still, looking on the bright side, with prices going up I have a reason to not buy new stuff and finish all the old Very Happy Should keep me busy until I get rich enough to be able to afford anything they come up with Wink

Am I the only person in the universe who is happy about the switch to resin?

I've had a (irrational?) dislike of metal models for a number of years now (weight, difficulty of conversion and ease of chipping mainly) and it excluded a lot of the GW range from my collection. Now I'll be able to pick the ones I've always wanted.

But that's just me. It doesn't help you guys at all! Embarassed

For the rest of you - these 100+ models in the first wave of Finecast have been "Direct Only" for a long time. Which means the only way to get them is from GW Mail Order. Now they will be in GW stores. Big deal? No, because models that are sold in stores are also sold to the online traders. This means we can buy them from those online traders for 15% less than GW list-price. That makes them about the same as, or less in some cases, that the metal models currently are.

So there! Razz

Resin is great for certain things...riffle barrels, sword blades, et al don't fit into that "certain thing" area. With large pieces cast in resin the pitting that goes along with the media is some what less difficult to deal than with mini sized pieces. AND cutting apart a resin piece is even worse than a metal mini.

Also those 15% off places will be still 20% more than what we were paying them before the latest greed move. SO...you're alone, Amigo. What a Face

This is not the same type of resin that Forge World use, and everything I've read about it has been positive. Light, doesn't break, isn't carcinogenic... Smile

The only kick in the nadgers is the price increase and the "will they discontinue even more models?" worries.

Unless you're Australian or a kiwi, in which case you're boned in a whole new kind of way since they will forbid European retailers (such as Maelstrom and Waylands) to sell outside the EU. Sad

I haven't really bought GW minis in a long time, but this has served as a kick in the pants to make sure I grab the metals from the LotR range that I do want, since most of those probably aren't profitable to keep making now that they're switching media. So I guess in that sense, this is a good thing for me. Still, I can't help but wonder how much the GW-faithful are willing to put up with before they stop buying, and I feel bad for the long-time hobbyists.

The exact qualities of the "new" resin are totally unconfirmed but rumour has it that it is more like plastic than the brittle Forge World resin. I won't pretend the price rise is good news but it's not like GW hasn't done that every 6-12 months for the last 15 years or so.

The reduction (total drop?) of metal also means more plastic kits going forwards as they have made it clear that resin will be for characters and individual models, while troops and monsters and artillery will be plastic.

Now,the only way I'll think this is good is if they somehow make moulds of all the discontinued decent minis and put them out in their wonder-resin.

Then I might carry on buying from them.

my local GW store reassured me that the new resin models are though enough to drop them and have them survive... something a lot of people feared wouldn't be he case. He says they're stronger than the Forge world resin.

Secondly, he also assured me that the specialist games ranges would NOT switch to resin. Mordheim stays metal hoeray Very Happy

for our australian friends: do not dispair. Rumours says that GW expelled their local distributers there because they are planning to increase their own presence in these areas... for what it's worth...

I'll wait for judgement on the quality of GW's resin till I have had it in my hands.
I don't know about the fear of resin-minis not surviving a drop. I only dropped a mini once. It was a metal-mini and it broke where I had pinned it. So in this scenario, it is all the same to me.
I also don't know about the idea of getting back Mordheim-Minis in resin. All the models supposed to get a relaunch in resin are fairly new., so this sounds like a wild rumour.
And I DO feel sorry for the lads down under. Hadn't known the hobby was that more expensive than it's here. I think, that if they woun't be able to order from Wayland or wherever anymore, Australians might in the long run order from european ebay-sellers which themselves order at Wayland (or simular).

A couple of unconfirmed rumours:

1. The Specialist Games minis are staying metal for now.
2. Australia and other territories are going to get a "better service" from GW soon. An announcement is apparently imminent...

Is Grimgor in there? Okay, this might stretch the term "fairly new"...fairly. I cannot find the table of all the models getting a relaunch, but from what I remember Grimgor should be one of the oldest models among them and he can still be bought regularely. He is not a collector's edition or in the specialists' game category i mean.

All the models in the first wave of resin are good sellers, regardless of age, but it's not surprising that there are mostly new models there.

Mantic is now jumping on the Plastic/Resin Band Wagon. They will be doing their metal minis in the "new" type resin, AND like G.W. there will be a price change: i.e., you'll get TWICE AS MANY MINIS FOR THE SAME PRICE! Details here:
http://theminiaturespage.com/news/434048/
That rather underlines where G.W's interest in The Hobby lies...somewhere around where you keep your wallet. Suspect

Does Mantic have any good Goblin things? Not a big fan of a lot of their orcs, although some head swaps and it could work.

@Deaf: Wow. Just, wow. Twice as many minis.

I really love plastic minis, to be honest. I used to not like the weight, but I find them durable, easy to assemble and paint, and detailed (now that they are sculpted using Mudbox and other programs). Metal's my second choice, and I don't know about resin yet; it's always been hard for me to assemble, and doesn't take primer well.

I guess with their Orcs it's a matter of what floats your boat...I rather like their take on the Beasties; they're rather reminiscent of Rackham's Orcs. G.W's 40 K Orks are still in the Oh-So-Cool category with moi.
They don't make any Goblins yet .

I was rather taken back by the mini doubling thing myself.
